Rezső Gubik
Dear forum members, I've got to my hand a MDS-JE500 MD deck from a first owner in quite good condition. Unfortunately as more I am playing/recording with it there comes randomly an error message while recording: Retry - Retry error. It means, at retry error it skips the current recording to a new separate track. It is really annoying and random. Sometimes a disk is written with max. 2 errors but sometimes with 10+. Following the repair manual I have made a recording test and the focus bias test, here the result was below the limitation: focus errors were below 20, namely 0-5 error/session. The heads are clean and dust free. The symptoms are present with used and new disk either. Any proposals or tips? Thank you!
sfbp
Not sure if this helps https://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MDS-JE500+S37.html The page speaks of random retry errors. You might do better with a newer deck - they are not that expensive any more. Kind regards
Rezső Gubik
I've read this topic too, but my issue is not connected with the titling of the disk/tracks 😕 Nevertheless, I hope I dont need to dump my deck...
sfbp
Right, but the existence of such errors does point to some underlying problem that is nothing to do with alignment. I don't think you can update firmware but maybe you (or someone reading this) knows differently.

sfbp
Stick around, we may need you (experts at fiddling with the low level stuff are always welcome around here). Do you live in Budapest? We had an excellent techy member from there who left us, sadly.
Rezső Gubik
Dear sfbp, yes, I am from Budapest. I know an older repairman but in an other city. He will check my deck soon and I will come back with the outcome 🙂
