Question

i got myself a nw-s705f for xmas here in canada ~ and i was wondering whether or not this thing is capable of displaying chinese? i downloaded the pacific asia version of the sonicstage 4.2 and in the program the character displays properly. and under the atrac device it shows the characters properly ~ but when i look at it on the player itself it's all scrambled. i managed to get it to display chinese if i use the japanese version of the sonic stage but i have to rename each songs to chinese once i transfer it to the player and it takes forever. is there anyway to go around it? 99% of my songs are in chinese and it doesn't help having to rename each id3 tag to english or something :(

Make sure you do the registry changes also, not just using applocale, and re-transfer the tracks after the registry changes. Anybody can really confirm that S7xx units outside Japan can display kanji? Could be Sony doing its stupid regioning at the firmware level again.

hmm i think i finally got it to work :S but i have to set my language in regional setting advance tab back to english first before i can get the appolache to run in traditional chinese ~ it was originally set at Chinese (hong kong) (i guess that's why it said my system is already configure to display the selected unicode, but i don't know why it won't transfer properly though) now i can transfer songs in chinese no prob to the player. but the only downside is all my other program that can originally read chinese folders can't read it now :( only shows up as ???? ~ is there a way to work around this so i don't have to switch the system language back and forth? (aside from renaming all my chinese folders)

That's right, you cannot use applocale for the same locale as your windows system. Unfortunately, Sonicstage 3.x and above won't display kanji if you just change windows' locale (it used to work with SS2.x and below). I don't know if there is a specific Chinese version of Sonicstage. I used to change my system locale to Japanese and installed the Japanese version of Sonicstage just to enable kanji. Yeah, this is the big problem of Sony. (read my sig). Up to you, which one is more important, sonicstage, or your other data. Another reason I moved away form Sony to Apple.

It is possible to use applocate with sonic stage 3 and above. B) You need to connect the flash player first, then start sonic stage. I use the English version of sonic stage, since the Japanese does not work with it. The Network Walkman from Sony are not region specific, but sonic stage is. With AppLocate and Sonic Stage you can transfere digital audio files that contain any character set, and even rename them on your Network Walkman.

Everybody knows that already. The poster problem is that his/her windows locale is already set to Chinese, and SS3.x and above will NOT display kanji without applocale. Unfortunately, using applocale won't work in his/her case since you cannot run applocale with the same language (in this case, Chinese) as the windows locale. So if you already set windows locale to Chinese, you cannot set applocale to chinese. In his/her case, it's more problematic since he/she has other programs that rely on the windows locale setting to work properly with kanji filenames.
