Question

Hello all.

I am looking to buy a new PDCP.

I have done quite a bit of research on the internet but really there isnt much information to be found.

My parameters:

Money is not really an issue.

I have a large cd collection and standard cds are what I primarily intend on playing (as apposed to mp3 / atrac cdrs).

Quality of sound is important.

Remote with back lit lcd is vital.

Would like it to be small, though this is not absolutely vital.

So I am thinking either ne830, ne20 or ej2000. Can anyone recommend any others that would fit the bill?

I have read about compatibility problems with the ne20, however this obviously wont affect me much as I wont often be playing mp3 / atrac cdrs.

The ej2000 does not play mp3s and atrac, which is a pity cos I wouldnt mind having that feature even if i wouldnt use it often. What is the remote like for the ej2000? Ive heard the remote for the other 2 are pretty bad.

I havent read much about the ne830 at all. Can anyone offer their opinions on this player?

How do these 3 models compare?

Im from the uk and I notice that european models have volume limitations / caps, which is an annoyance. Im thinking of getting a Boostaroo Revolution (http://www.boostaroo.com/store_detail.php4?id=10) to counter this problem. Anyone got one of these? Or else I may order it from the US, where the volume is not capped.

Any help would be much appreciated.

cheers, andy

I was going to recommend you get the DNE830 from Audiocubes but it seems all the portable CD players are now gone from their site. If you are going to buy a Sony player then import one. The volume capping makes them next to useless, honestly you shouldn't have to get a separate amplifier to make them useable.

Howdy,

About 3 weeks ago I got a Brand New D-NE20 on eBay for $75 shipped.

I had been using a refurbished D-NE900 for the last 15 months. I feel that the D-NE20 blows the 900 away in terms of sound quality, and functionality. Much stronger bass response. I'm also able to hear details with the NE20 that I could not hear with the D-NE900, using my Shure E4C IEMs.

Last week I also won a D-NE10 for a measly $27 shipped on eBay. I plan to keep this unit in the box until the unfortunate time that my D-NE20 dies.

I figure that since Sony no longer produces high end PCDPs that I should stock up on NIB players. I am hoping to get the D-NE920, but it seems to be the rarest of the bunch. I had a D-NE920 back in the spring of 2005 but it died an early death as a result of an accident. I remember the D-NE920 being a very nice player and recommend it due to the good SQ and the nice LCD screen on the face of the unit.

Good luck and I definitely recommend importing a Japanese or North American unit to get around the volume limitation BS.

Generally speaking, the D-NE10/910/810s will sound generally alike to one another and the D-NE20 series to one another. So, if you like the sound of the D-NEx20 series, then stick with the 20 series, you will find the sound from the D-NE10 will be dissapointing compared to the D-NE20.

Oddly enough, more of them folks at Head-Fi preferred the sound of the 10 series over the 20 series. As for me, the 20 series do sound a tad bit better, but not as much as you might suggest. It's an incremental upgrade, but compared to other PCDPs of the era (more than two years ago), it was pretty advanced (only the iRiver's SlimX series had achieved something equal to it). But now, the flash players are taking over the market that the CD used to occupy. With Sony now more or less done with high end PCDPs...
