Question

Greeting all.

I'm after some advice and I think if anyone can help me you guys (and girls) should be able to. Kind of like the A-team!

I'm thinking that I might be looking to invest in one of these new fangled (!) mp3 player thingies, mostly for use in the car, the office, and at home (through aux inputs at home and in car), maybe in the gym. I'm just really looking for a method of having a large(ish) selection of music in one place, rather than remembering to pick up CDs. Our computer at home (a sony vaio you'll be pleased to hear) is rarely on and isn't really set up to become a media hub for the house.

Anyway, I've come across NW-A1200s for sale for just over £100, reputable supplier getting rid of stock. On the face of things this looks a good deal - it's a cracking looking unit and I hear the sound quality is worthwhile. My only worry is whether or not it's worth it..... So I'm after your opinions.

How reliable is the NW-A1200? In as far as, will it stil be operating in a year/Two years? I just want something I can use to transport/play music on...There seem to be some horror stories going around (particularly I guess as it's HDD instead of flash).

What are the chances that I'll be cursing Sonic stage in a week if I do this? I'll primarily being burning my CD collection into it to start off with, rather than buying tracks online. I've got some experience of sonic stage having had a NetMD a while back, and I'd be looking to bin connect immediately and get the latest sonic stage to use with it (as an aside, does anyone else find buying sony equipment is a bit of lottery purely because of the software? My W800i is the same - the disk connect software has never worked correctly... If Sony just sorted their software they'd be awesome!).

How much "support" is there from Sony for Sony NW-A1200/3000's? It seems to be worryingly missing off of their web-site - I know it's been discontinued, and if it's not particularly reliable then I'm not sure it's worth investing in "old" technology, regardless of price.

Other threads have alluded to the fact that it might be worth waiting, as if they know something about future releases that no one else does. Come on, spill the beans! I'm assuming they're alluding to more than just the latest A800 family. Stick the screen from the NW-A1000 series on a flash based player like the A800 (don't want the colour screen/image/video capabilities) and I'd be happy!

Anyway... I've written more than enough for my first post. All comments and advice welcome. It seems a good price - I'm just not sure if it's a good enough price for discontinued and potentially unreliable technology...

Hi and welcome to ATRACLIFE

It's a discontinued model so that's why you won't see it on the Sony website hence the price reduction. It can be found cheaper than £100 in the UK, try the supermarkets, Sainsburys, Tescos. Had mine for approx. 1 year and it's still going strong. It has a dedicated line out so you can hook it up to your home system/car etc. As for Sonicstage I have never had a problem with it. :)

the price for the nw-a1000, 1200 and 3000 are all dropping, they were dropping already a year ago across different countries, good quality and good sound, simply because it's a sony, yes nothing is perfect. people may complain this and that, but better off than any other brand, nw-a800 is a flash memory player, it has video function, but a1000 is just a music player, that's really good, u get all of the functions to enjoy music, but if u need more functions then get other flash memory ones. it's worthy of anybody's money, just the look is enough to convince u, i mean even the reduced price is a bonus, people had to pay full retail price when this was first introduced, now u get it for a cheaper price
