Hi guys,

I have been sneaking on your forum since my HD5 went nuts, (the old Repairing Database...fail thing) which you already solved for me. Now a new problem...Sonicstage....I just bought a brand spanking new PC and installed SS 4.Fail (the newest version) and it randomly disconnects my HD5, it crashes after every operation, it will not auto transfer, it lags like a 56k on a bad day just mousing over buttons. What alternatives are there to use without loosing the soundquality and obviously what program will convert the audio to work on the HD5?

Please help, I am considering a 20gb Ipod because of this

It is so odd that some people faces problems while others don't face any problems. I happen to be the latter person, whch I consider myself lucky.

I am using Vista Business and SonicStage 4.3 and haven't encountered any problems. I wonder what causes these inconsistency between people.

There is one software that I know, which supports Walkman with reasonable functions. It is called BeatJam 2007. The software works pretty well, but it isn't free.

Nay! Vista *spit* never. I went for good ol XP. The annoying thing is is that I can work 4.3 on my XP laptop but with this brand spanking new PC I get the following symptoms. My apologies for the lack of details in the previous post I was...a little wound up to say the least

- Sonicstage 4.3 lags during normal use

- Mousing over "Auto" transfer button gets me the "Device/Media not connected" in the transfer box

- Some transfers (single files) gets me "Unable to transfer due to ..." messages

- Opening the Auto Transfer options lags

- Actually pressing the Auto Transfer button gets the '"Device/Media not connected" in the transfer box' problem circling before crashing

Sony support = fail and thus I turn to you good people to help as for "It is so odd that some people faces problems" yeah...I wish I was part of the group who dont get problems

The general recommendation for now is not to use Vista. Even iTunes have problems with Vista.

20GB iPod? Must be a really old one. :D

  • 1 month later...

I am Sonicstage 4.3 on Windows Vista and was experiencing the very same symptoms with my NW-HD5: The player was visible in windows, the remaining space on its disk even showed in Sonicstage, but going through the menus or anything else in Sonicstage was painfully slow. Then the transfer window would show the "Device not connected" message and start the connecting sequence over again. This then repeated a few times until eventually Sonicstage would stop working. Uninstalling/reinstalling Sonicstage, changing USB-cables, switching USB-ports... nothing would help.

I noticed that my walkman was on drive L: on my system. In between C: and L: were a whole bunch of devices, among which a series of card readers. In system management I noticed these were also connected through the USB-controller. Since I don't use any of these, I disabled them in the device manager.

After rebooting, my walkman now is connected as drive F: and now works fine with Sonicstage !!! I am completely godsmacked, but very, very relieved.

Maybe my experience can point you in the direction of a solution?

Among the other issues listed, Chronicstage also has problems with larger libraries. I accidentally came upon this by trying to figure out why some forum members had no problems and why others (like me) had terminal problems. The upshot of that was that Chronicstage can only successfully manage around 8,000 tracks before performance starts rapidly tailing off. I'd first check that you don't have more than this, then work with other possibilities.
