NW-HD5 line out question

Question

I have a chance to get a NW-HD5 at a very good price, I live in london england and understand that there is a a french law in europe that restricts the volume level.

I mainly want the NW-HD5 because it has a line out and want to use my C&C BOX+ portable headphone amp with it.

My question is will the line out volume be restricted in the same as as the headphone volume would be, I understand there is a hack to fix the volume but I wondered if it affected the line out volume in the same way.

Many thanks.

No, the restriction on the volume won't effect your line out as it will be your amp providing the volume. The volume control on the HD5 will not work once in line out mode. You can apply the volume hack, the instuctions to which can be found on this site.

Thanks for the reply.

How good is the line out compared to most other Mp3 players.

I find it fine, although I prefer the line out on my A1200. The line out on the HD5, if you forget to turn it off and put your headphones on your in for an unpleasant surprise. The A1200 on the other hand would be silent if you forget to turn the line out off.

I have never had a sony Mp3 player before and the only reason I am on the lookout for one is because it has a dedicated line out that I can use with my portable headphone amp.

I can get a used A1200 from computer exchange so maybe i'll go down that route, I also live in london.

I hope when I get one that the hack to fix the volume limit is easy, many thanks again.

Your welcome! Yes, the A1000/A1200/A3000 have the Line out feature, and the volume will greatly improve once the hack is applied.

i would get the hd5, classic bits of kit, with great SQ, and ideal for running an amp off. i am selling an nw-hd5H (30GB) if anyone is interested in contacting me with a sensible offer, and finding out more. quaddytweeder@yahoo.co.uk

That's an impressive line up of HD5's you have there. I have a black one, but my favourite is red :)

why thank you kind sir :-)

you know the red unit was the latest one i aquired, few weeks ago, and theres something about it thats very appealing, i thought the red would be a bit gawdy, but it has a nice little shimmer going on, coupled with the silver buttons, very nice unit indeed. we are both lucky to own one!

I use my hd5 with line out into a Pocketamp 2v2 then into etymotic 6i's or UE Superfi 5 Pro's. The sound is excellent (IMHO!!) ( Got 4 small velcro hook and loop "dots" to fix player and amp together back to back. ) For great sound and volume it's an excellent setup!

Having said all that - I regard the above as my "winter" rig - ie when I have coat/jacket/shirt etc with a pocket. My summer/minimalist approach is the NWA-808 on a neck lanyard with just the Etymotic phones - dont think you can get any lighter/smaller!!??? I call it my "matchbox" rig !! ( Actually strictly speaking it's my "altoids/mint tin " rig - cos phones and player fit in a small (lined) mint tin and slips into a small pocket perfectly!!!!
