NWA808 'skipping/jumping' problem

Question

Hi, I have a NWA808 video walkman. I use AAC files encoded in itunes (128kbps) and quite regularly the player will skip a fraction of a second of a song, typically about 7 or 8 seconds into the song, but it can happen at anytime, for example a couple of seconds after viewing the album art of the song playing.

It seems to only happen with AAC files, not the few mp3s i have on it, and doesn't happen on every song.

It's hard to describe, but it's a noticable jitter in the song playing. A bit like a personal cd player jumping when knocked.

I'm suprised to find no-one else has this problem as it would seem to be more like a problem with the way the player handles aac files as opposed to my unit being faulty, but you never know.

PS. It's running the 1.02 firmware.

I hope someome else can confirm/dismiss this problem as i need to decide whether to get a refund or a replacement.

No problem here with my ATRAC-files, did you try if you could hear in on your PC too, using SS?

And is it on the same moment in the same song? If so, it could be an encoding problem, reripping should solve it. If it really is the player AFAIK it's the first time this problem is mentioned.

Hi,

It's definitely not the files.

It sometimes does it on a track and other times not, and not always at the same point. I'm finding it really frustrating as now i know it's there even if i'm not thinking about it i still hear it jumping...

Well it's going back today for a refund i think.

Hello From Greece, happy to meet you! :)

I've noticed this problem once. 128kbps aac file encoded by sonicstage software (high quality setting). It skipped for a second. I played the track again from the beginning and didn't do that again even at this specific point of the track. Firmware 1.02 Here. I think it's a firmware bug and not faulty hardware. If player's memory (defective flash memory chip) corrupts the data, this problem would also occurred with mp3 files. Thanks and sorry about my bad English.

I discover that if i disable clear stereo and dsse (which produces artifacts on low frequency bass e.g. on infected mushroom's never ever land track), my nw-a808 don't skips when playing aac files. Also i must say that i found the skipping problem occurred rarely, on specific aac tracks and at the same track's position. Turning those options off the skipping problem disappears. Absolutely a firmware bug. Anyway, I'm happy now :) and i also like the sound of my 808 better with those options turned off. Now i must found which one of those two options causes this problem.
