Question

Has anyone had a problem with their 706 just cutting out whilst listening. Fisrt time mine did this and then worked fine the next day. Then a month later and it went again. Now it is completely lifeless and has gone back to Sony under warranty.

Had loads or Walkmans and Clies and this is my first failure. Is it a 706 weakness?

Many thanks

John

Yes, 706 has a weakness- but not the one you're referring to. The most common problem for S70Xs (The ones with the NC feature) is the weak headphone jack. Due to the filmsy construction of the NC port, the headphone jack becomes loose and goes dead.

I think your S706 is just a defected one.

my first 706's left earphone went completely about 5 months after i'd had it so i got it replaced. now i've had my 2nd 706 for about 5 months and i get a crackling sound if i move. I think it's something to do with the extension cord because the problems resolves if i plug the earphones directly into the player...

the retailer i got it from is tyring to get me some new earphones......... let's see what happens!

ok quick question..... the problem i had worsened and the think the actual headphone port on the player was damaged. It's been sent for repair, what are the chances of them being able to fix it?

if they can't fix it, then they should replace it. It's still under guarantee. There's no way you should be left without a unit after less than a year!

yeah that's true, but i was wondering what are the chances of getting a new one or them being able to fix this one.

basically this is the 2nd nws706 i've had because of exactly the same fault before... tbh right now i just want a different model simply becuase i think the extra terminal in the earphones makes it a weak point and what i dont want is it to break after 12 months and me be left without anything...

Did you buy it from Sony, Amazon, eBay? Sony and Amazon have to honour the guarantee. If you don't want to take the risk of having the 706 replaced with another one, how about choosing another model and offering to pay the difference? As far as I know, if the replacement is 5 months old, they don't have to exchange it or refund it. They do have to send it off for repair though, and if it's not capable of being fixed, then they should offer you something else.

It's unlikely you'd get a refund because they'd argue you've had the use of a 706 for almost a year. But as they know it's a problem you've had twice now, they should be OK with giving you a different model. If it was me, I'd suggest that to them. At least you might be able to get a brand new model for a minimal outlay. It's worth trying anyway.

i bought it from play.com first time around. when it broke down i rang them, and as they didn't have any in stock to replace it with, they gave me refund and took back the faulty player.

i then bought the same player from empire direct for about the same price...

i guess i'll see what happens with this repair and take it from there. thanks for the replies tho!

But the thing is right now we are not left with any other option, but to get it repaired under warrenty .

The thing is, if the unit's failed twice, there's no obligation to accept a repair OR an exchange, since this headphones jack thing is obviously an issue with some of the units.

If it was me, I would look for another model altogether, and ask for the cost of the 706 to be deducted from the new unit. Unless you desperately want another 706, just get another model. You can't guarantee a new or 'repaired' 706 isn't going to suffer from the same problem again, as it seems to attack 'randomly'.

I would be very firm about and say something like: "I'd rather not accept a third repair/replacement thank you. If it happens again it will be out of warranty and I'll have no unit. I'd prefer to buy a more reliable model and have the cost of the 706 put towards the new purchase".

To be fair, I have been known to insist on my consumer rights quite loudly in shops!! I had a Sagem Freeview recorder that had some inherent fault with it, and 2 years and 3 exchanges later, I took it back to Argos (with one day left until the third warranty expired) and got a brand new Wharfedale to replace it. My argument was the Sagem couldn't be repaired because it was an inherent fault with most of the models, and I refused a replacement on the grounds I didn't trust the durability of the product.

I'm sure if you use a similar argument, you'll be able to come to a satisfactory conclusion. Of course, if you don't want another model, then I haven't got any suggestions!

i'm going to wait and see what happens when I get this one back... if i have a problem with it again, i will do exactly that, i think i'd 'upgrade' to an a818.

but, two problems: firstly, my first unit was ffrom play.com and current one from empire direct so "it's happened before" might not wash with them. secondly, they don't stock the player i want to replace it with!!! i'll see when i get it back and will keep u updated!
