Question

hey guys

I got my new nwz-a816 for christmas, and i'm loving it. Great soundquality, and it works easy! But the problem now is that i've converted some wave files to aac (aac size is much smaller then mp3). But the problem is that the player doesn't want to play the aac files! So I don't know what i'm doing wrong I convert with dbpoweramp. So guys I hope you can help!

thanks in advance

Dennis

Hey man,

I also use dbpoweramp when ripping securely under windows.

Make sure not to encode to raw aac. You can specify .mp4 ending in your encoding preferences.

hey thanks guys for your help so far, but I didn't solve the problem yet

I'm using the nero digital codec for aac/m4a, when I want to rip I can choose between m4a Nero (aac) or AAC (advanced audio compression also from nero). So I've chosen the first one, and I couldn't find the .mp4 extension which ceres mentioned. I tried several times, and I stil don't know how to get it to work. I added a picture from dbpoweramp I hope that will help :)

thanks for your help again!

I know that WMA VBR is supported by NWZ-A810 series

When I use the 'best quality' option for wma (vbr) - I find that anything which rips at a bitrate of between 350/400kbps ends up being converted, and anything below that bitrate transfers without conversion. So I think that 350kbps (or thereabouts) is the maximum bitrate the 808/828 can support without having to convert. I use wma (vbr) quite often (since re-ripping my collection for the Zune), and frequently the Sony has to convert higher bitrates to a lower bitrate, so I end up with half and half on my 808.

If I understood you right... I believe that's because from WMP11, WMA VBR supports only up to 355kbps. So, any files with bit-rate higher than 355kbps will be converted; not necessarily because of hardware limit, considering linear PCM is at 1411.2 kbps.

That's because the figure under 'best quality' says: 240kbps to 355kbps. The reality is that those figures aren't quite accurate. In one album (by the same artist) - wmp ripped 17 tracks between 165kbps and 409kbps (the lower bitrate was for songs without much dynamic range) but there was a big difference in the bitrates. So I had 9 tracks with bitrates over 350kbps. and SS had to convert them, even though wmp (vbr) obviously supports it, since those very high bitrates are showing under 'properties'. I don't understand why, but it looks like maybe it's SS that can't support that particular bitrate in vbr?

I was under impression that you were using WMP11. In the case of SS, unless the specific format is supported by the software, it will probably convert it (does SS support VBR?). Maybe drag-n-drop will work without conversion?

Anyhow, I knew I wasn't fully understanding your previous commnet and not an expert in this matter.

Zizone, I am using wmp 11 and my rip settings are wma (vbr) at best quality. Then I drag the folders into SS ready for transfer. And when I transfer the tracks (which are over 350kbps), it's then that SS has to convert.

It will be interesting to see how the 'new' model works, but I imagine it would support the same bitrates as the models we already have anyway. I don't really care, I just want 16GB

Can you please make a screenshot of the resulting files? If you install the explorer extension of poweramp and then hover over the created files you should be able to see if the tags are incomplete or the file ending is off.

Hi there

The AAC files I have made with dBpoweramp work ok on my NWZ-A816. I use the batch converter to convert flac files from my external hard drive to VBR q0.65 AAC files. They have the M4A extension and play fine.

The only other thing worth mentioning is that I don not use the latest Nero codec, as there have been some compatibility issues with later ones. I have version 1.0.7.0 which I think is the March 2007 version.

Hope that's some help.

Peter
