Guest Anonymous
I'd had my eye on a ~$400 Sony (U.S.) deck with optical outs (I think it was the MDS-JE770). Went to Crutchfield's site to discover it's been discontinued. Additionally, it also looks like the non-optical-out MDS-JE470 is also being dropped by most dealers. Looking at SonyStyle, I don't see any replacements except for combo MD-CD decks. Is Sony in the middle of a model-year changeout?
MDX-400
Maybe you're right maybe new decks are coming but aren't the 470 and 770 pretty new models? Or maybe it is just Crutchfield that isn't going to carry decks (and maybe MD altoghether) anymore. In Canada I think they stopped selling MD decks last year. Perhaps they are doing the same for 2003 in the US??? That is kinda sad if that happens. I hope this isn't the beginning of the end for MD  I mean MD was never that popular here in North America, but I don't think they need to discontinue NA decks totally... Roland M. me
Theres new decks MDS-JE780, 980, and 480. They've been out since around July, and sell them in New Zealand. I guess North America is out of luck. MD seems to have become more accepted in north america with NetMD.
MDX-400
Oh right the 480 and 780. I'm sure (actually I hope) those are coming to the US--perhaps that is why they don't carry the 470 and 770 anymore. I think I was confused at first. I thought the x70 were the latest ones, and that the 770 had the NetMD, but it is the 780 that has it. So really when he was saying JE770 I was thinking about the JE780. (Although, what is the difference between the JE470 and JE480?) But yeah kinda weird how Sony doesn't have any of the new decks on sonystyle.com (SonyStyle USA) right now, they only seem to list the MDS-JE470 @ $200. me
JE480 lacks NetMD, and probably a digital out, if it's anything like the JE440, 470..
MDX-400
JE480 lacks NetMD, and probably a digital out, if it's anything like the JE440, 470..Thanks, Me. Actually, though, I was asking what the difference beween the JE470 and JE480 was... They seem identical to me. Maybe a feature here or there is different? Roland M. me
all I see from Minidisc.org is that the JE480 has a 1 bit DAC rather than Hybrid Pulse from the 470. You're right. A feature here and there.
Mystyler
pcombs, it seems that Sony N.A. doesn't see any demand for home decks, even us here in Australia (and New Zealand!) Have had the JE480, JE780 and JB980 available for quite some time now. Guest Anonymous
Thanks to all for the replies. Rather than purchase a Japanese import MD deck (and since it seems that NetMD isn't all it's purported to be), I took the jump and bought an MDS-E10 (pro model). It cost a few dollars more than the previous top-of-the-line consumer deck here in the states, but I know it'll be supported. (At least, I hope so!)
