kupoluvsjchix
Hi, I am new to this forum and was wondering if you guys can help me out. I am planning to buy the panasonic MJ55... It will be my first MD player, but the thing is, its just a player, so that means I can't record music using it right? Okay, now my question is how will I get the music recorded on the minidisc if the MJ55 is not a recorder/player? thnx, KuPo
me
By buying another unit. You cannot do anything with a player except play MDs. May I suggest you look at the Panasonic MR220? It's better in a few ways to the Sony R909 and Sharp MT770. If not the MR220, theres the newer MR250 with NetMD or the even newer MR230 without. If you want a Sony, then the N10 is good. Also, Sharp has a non-NetMD MD-DR7 coming out. NetMD allows you to record at high speed to your MD unit. max LP2 quality (which probably isn't too bad). It also means you can't edit the disc out of the NetMD program. :|. Can't upload at high speed either. Bit of a bummer for that. If you don't want NetMD, you can still record using an ordinary 3.5mm line cable, or a miniplug to miniplug optical cable (portable CD player to MD recorder) or a TOSlink to miniplug (Home CD deck or soundcard) to the portable MD. This is in real time. The MR230, DR7, and R910 aren't NetMD capable, the MR250 and N10 both are. If you want a cheaper option, please consider the Sharp MT180 or Sony N505. (both don't have a mic jack). Or, the Sharp MT190 or Sony N707.
Leland
Hey, Me. When you say: max LP2 quality (which probably isn't too bad). Does this imply that you have not used LP2 due to the current units you own not supporting it? If you haven't used it, or have only experimented without really using it, I suggest you be very careful about commenting on its quality. ATRAC3 (in LP2, not LP4) is a modern and advanced codec that sounds fantastic. It is better that any MP3 I have heard at any bitrate. I am very quality oriented and find I have gravitated to LP2 almost exclusively. I only use SP for compatibility reasons now such as in my car player. I think most people would fail to distinguish LP2 from SP in a controlled blind test. Also, why are the NetMD limitations worth mentioning? You can't fast upload at high speed with a non-netMD recorder either, so in a comparison it is not a limitation, only compared to our personal wish list for what the format might have been. Since NetMD downloads complete songs with song titles either entered or taken from CDDB, the need for remote editing is minimized. You can move, group and even rename tracks if you use a NetMD player even if it is not connected to the PC. You cannot delete or trackmark downloaded tracks, which is to protect you from losing checkout credits. Blank space on a disc with NetMD downloaded tracks on it can still be used for other recording purposes and those tracks would be fully editable. Hey folks, the NetMD glass is at least HALF FULL and bigger than the non-NetMD glass.
me
Whatever!! It's just at the t-board, it seems theres a new thread everyday on people pissed off about the lack of NetMD uploading. I was saying 'this is what NetMD is, this is what it doesn't do' so he wouldn't come back here after buying a form of netmd, and say 'Hey it can't upload!! what the hell?!'. That assumption doesn't seem to happen with non-NetMD units. I don't use LP2 because I don't need it. No point. I said it probably isn't too bad, as I can't be the person in questions ears. I've used it on an R900, I can't really tell the difference, but I wouldn't use it anyway. Hence my latest addition is the MDS-PC1. Fine then, you can edit it.. A lot of the stuff I have needs trackmarking outside of the MD..
kupoluvsjchix
Hey thnx Me, Ill look into those other MD recorders you suggested. I really just got interested in the MJ55 because of those speakers it came with...
me
Oooh! The MR230 and MR250 both come with speakers.. They don't clip on to the unit, but apparently they aren't too bad for casual listening, like when you are about to sleep, put it on your dresser or something. Plus, the MR230 comes in RED. (my favourite colour.. ). Could you tell me where you intend to use the unit? Like.. Do you do PC based recordings?
kupoluvsjchix
Well Ive decided to get the mr230, but still havin some second thought about the mj55... besides being cheaper and all, it still comes with those cool lookin speakers... I jus dont want the speakers to be all big and take up space... I could just ask my friend to record songs for me since he has a MD recorder/player... but ya, now im just deciding on the mr230 or mj55... man... :? oh wait, one more question about the netmd.. so without that i wont be able to dl frm pc to MD player or what? :? me
Without NetMD, you cannot record at high speed from your computer. You can still record from a soundcard or whatnot, but not at high speed. Do you need this? The MR250 transfers LP2 data at about 15x, excluding conversion time from MP3 to ATRAC3.. Remember, the MR230 doesn't have netmd, the MR250 does. They are essentially the same unit except the MR250 has NetMD. Don't fool yourself into thinking you'll just record using your friends recorder.. It'll bug you a lot! Just get the MR250/230 Leland, I think I figured out why a lot of people dislike NetMD. They don't want a whole lot of .omg files clogging up their HDDs! (perhaps they're like me and have a 700Mhz processor, 10 gig hard drive.. don't want to upgrade after buying expensive NetMD). Meh.
Leland
That might be correct, but i figure HDD's are so cheap these days, why not have plenty of space so it doesn't matter. I have my database (17 gigs) and a backup of it (another 17 gigs) and still have lots of space left over. My tirade about Net MD is part of a personal campaign I have to try to balance the message a bit. I think there is so much focus on lack of uploading, that the great benefits are being overlooked. I probably shouldn't bother. Not enough people will hear. I will probably go back into lurk mode in a few weeks anyway.
me
Lol, keep posting! I think most people use it to transfer to the walkman, and couldn't care less what's on the computer (in fact are irked by the fact that deleting the .omg file deletes the .mp3, too. Can a rename foil that? ) Space might be cheap, but that's another NZ$200 for me i'd rather spend on headphones/blanks! (yeah yeah, i'm buying a 7200 RPM hdd as my 5400 likes to clatter around and break stuff for no reason.. ) Alls cool.
Guest Anonymous
So why would someone buy an md player instead of a recorder, if its so much better? Kind of a dumb question but ya... Okay wut if i get one of those sony n707 frm ebay for a really cheap price, since thats a recorder i could get the mj55 right? but why would i want two MD players huh... damnit :? ...ill probably end up buying the mr230... Bazirker
Honestly, i don't understand why people buy players and not recorders. Ok, so players are smaller and lighter and have better battery life, but is that worth not being able to record? To some it is.
kupoluvsjchix
i c... What if i buy a cheap recorder, would that make a difference in the quality of the music that i record? or it doesnt matter?
nicola
doesnt matter. well, some md audiophiles maybe could argue on that (yes: it seems that there is *real* people who can hear differences between same md recordings at the same quality and spot if the tune has been recorded by a sony or a sharp unit... these are things that give me the shivers!). Actually buying a cheap recorder is a good idea if you love the player you want to buy and you can't help it (like many people will do with the new sony E10 it seems... ), otherwise my suggestion is to try and buy the slimmest player-recorder! bye nicola
kupoluvsjchix
hey thnx nicola. hmm.. now to search on ebay... Hey is the panasonic MJ55 pretty decent? or does it have any flaws...? This is getting confusing... okay suppose i already have a sonyMZ-R70... What would be better to get, the panasonic MJ55 or MR230?... What would you guys get if you had to decide? :? :? :? :?
postpositivist
Hi Ku, The reason why one might want a player rather than a recorder/player is that, according to some, a player tends to be more sturdy and robust than a recorder/player. Here's a quote from famed MD Repairman, David Popovits taken from http://www.minidisc.org/repair_info.html "Buy the right MD. If possible, buy a portable player. Those tend to have less problems than recorders. Do your recordings on a MD deck, It's easier. If you cannot have 2 MD's as stated above buy a recorder that is known to be strong as possible. Try those having hard metal covers (MZ-R90/50) and those that are not known to have recording problems. You may refer to opinions brought by members of the MD Community Page." I, myself, have two MD units. I keep my MD recorder at home and take my more compact player with me when going out. Best regards, Postpositivist
kupoluvsjchix
Thanx Post, that really helped. Hopefully I can decide on what to get by next week. 8)
Leland
I thought in your first post you indicated you didn't have a means of making MD's, so you need a recorder, right? Also, I had a listen to the Panasonic MJ55 at the store here in Tokyo yesterday. I hopy your expectations for these little speakers aren't very high. They have a very tinny sound. I'm not sure what good they would be. This is generally the case with small, portable speakers. That is why many small computer speakers come with a little subwoofer to add richness to the sound. me
DR7 launched tomorrow, Leland, you have to go and listen to it. Muahaha! I still say the MR250/230 are good, or the Sharp DR7, or if you want netMD, the N10.. Or if you're feeling rich, the Sony MDS-JE780 + Sharp DS8/Sony E710/E10, or Panasonic MJ95/55..
Mystyler
kupoluvsjchix, I would recommend a recorder. Having just a player would be a hassle, but if you have the dosh, player+deck=unbeatable killa setup. 8) HOWEVER, if you friend with the recorder is prepared to be hasseled to record your latest CD, the there is nothing wrong with the MJ55 - I believe it is the only current "slot" loader around. Plus IIRC the internals light up for night-loading. No issues yet with the MJ55 though, a good thing. The MR230 should have better speakers, but I do doubt that they will be decent, good for casual listening yes - I use my D66 headphones as speakers in a pinch...And durability wise, my Panasonic has stood up to everything, except high voltage, and some fool trying to shake the crap out of it in an attempt to beat the anti-skip. As both these events occured within hours of each other, I can't say for sure which one did the damage but I'd say the voltage.
Guest Anonymous
Hey thnx Mystyler, but ya, I guess it all depends on if I win this one auction on ebay... Its for an MZ370, if I win, then I'll get the mj55 since the mz370 is a recorder already... If i dont, then ill just get the MR230... So ya.. thnx for all the help everybody!!! kupoluvsjchix
Oh ya.. what does "titling while playback is available" mean?
Mystyler
It means you can title your tracks/discs while listening to the music.

kupoluvsjchix
Hey do I need a universal power adapter to use the MJ55? Just makin sure before i order it...
Mystyler
Yep, but I'd think that the MJ55 uses the tricky 1.8V - goodluck trying to find an adapter of that spec. :| If you can get a power converter, 110V (I assume you're in the US?) down to 100V. If you should happen to find a 1.8V converter (when you get it, confirm the voltage on the Jap adapter) you'll need one that supplies no less than 500mAh. 1.5V adapters won't work. Fernando Olmos
kupoluvsjchix, Forget MD, go for an iPod or one of those MP3 harddisc players with 20G of disc space! ONLY KIDDING!!! hehehe... enjoy your unit... you're going to love it. I have a Sharp iMT880 (NetMD) recorder, and it has the best 2-tone remote on the market today, fully backlit, with big chars and able to display Kanji chars too! Go for NetMD.... it'll save you time ripping your favourite music from your PC or laptop. Ciao
kupoluvsjchix
Hey thnx fernando. Now all i need to do is wait... common, common!!!! 8)
