Well, I'm using the ED228 earphones right now and thought about getting the EX70SL. Now, my question is: Do you really hear a difference between them or is it only wasted money? What can you experts out there tell me about earphones, can you give me any recommendations? I don't want to spend all my money on new earphones when the difference in sound quality is near zilch. thanks

i would say yes u would hear a difference...but that is only my opinion...the EX70SL are indeed very very nice earbuds and i would recommend them 2 u as would any one else who hav either used them or own a pair themselves...if u don't want inner-ear type earbuds i suggest u either look @ the Sennheiser range of earbuds (MX400/500) or the one's i use which are the Sony 888sp...

If your quite the quality stringent person then buying the ex70 for a non-sony md probably isn't such a good idea.. I learnt that one the hard way.

Saying that they are quite nice, also very good for when you're on the bus cos you can actually hear more music instead of more bus noise. If you do buy the ex70 and you're using something non-sony and find it sounds like an isolated version of the budget earphones that come with any portable, it's easy to figure out a preset for winamp to fix up the sound, that's what I do now so they sound fine with my md and earphones.

That being said, If you're thinking of buying the E888's... dont bother. You might as well save up just a tad bit more and buy the Bang & Olufsen A8 earphones. Now THEY are pretty damn fine, very light and very comfortable. The only other in-ear type earphones i can think off are the Koss The Plug ones or the Etymotic Research ER-4P (for portable stuff). I haven't had a chance to try out the etyomitcs but the koss ones are ok (cheaper than ex70 too)

You're talking about the $20 Koss in-ear canal type buds, right? I was thinking about buying them the other day, but they don't look like they wouldn't be very comfy, and I haven't even heard of Koss so I don't know how they sound. One of the things I want canal-type buds for is sleeping with the side of my head on a pillow, so comfort is a big deal...but as always, so is sound quality. Could anyone give me a bit more of an in depth "review" of them?

Never head or KOSS? OMG */me slaps Bazirker*

Well, "The Plug" (canal phone from KOSS) sound horrible, too boumy

But thier behind the neck and headphones are good! (KSC50/55)

The 828 are crap compared to Sony EX70-E888/Sennheiser MX400-500

If you need isolation, go for them, if not, get a 12$ MX400 bud wink.gif sound pretty much like the E888 do (The 888 are slighty better, looks kewler, more confortable, but doesn't worth 5x more...)

Owwwwwwww....

Naw man I've heard of Koss before, BUT I've never used any of their stuff before or known anyone who has, so I might as well have not heard of them. The reason I inquired about those buds is because I've seen them in the store before but I haven't seen any other kind of in-canal type buds anywhere else (except Radio Shack brand, and they are basically the exact same thing at The Plug.) It was just easier to say I'd never heard of them before than to explain why I was interested and stuff. Anyway, thanks for the tip.

Heh heh.

chances are the d66's do sound better than the ex70's, almost anything more expensive (and somteimes cheaper too) does really.

I've tried the d22's at the sony shop (connected to one of their older model discmans) and I really do not see how they can charge so much for a piece of crap like that. I mean even the G82's blow them away.

Seriously if you're after a good pair of headphones for when you're on the street, the G82's would do pretty fine. And they wont burn as big a hole in ur wallet as the d66's

So, the G82 are better than the D22? Well, actually I need some headphones for home listening with my MD...

I've never read any reviews about the G82, I just know everyone is going crazy over the D66. The price of the G82 better for sure... hm

The EX70s leave lots to be desired, compared to the D66s. Soundstage, smoother treble and more of it, it has real bass, which is something the EX70s lack. The EX70s have more of a bloated mid range, which then overpowers anything else.

The EX70s win hands down for isolation, though. Nothing like plugging up your ears to block the outside world.

You cannot compare the D22s and D66s, really. The D66s wipe the floor with the D22s, in all respects, except for colour choice.

That's exactly what I DON'T want to do - to rush into buying the first headphones I find. I want to choose the headphones carefully. And that's why I'm asking for your opinion here. I'd buy non-Sony headphones, too, but I don't know much about them. So many people say the D66 are the best, even though they are quite expensive.

I don't have the possibility to test-listen to all kinds of different phones, that's why I rely on other people's opinions.

Anyway, it will take some time until I'll have enough money to buy headphones - lotsa time to think about what to buy. If I buy a new remote before the headphones, I'll even have more time to think about which ones to take.

To add to the long list of earbud questions...

I want to get a good pair of earbuds. I have some US$10 sony buds that I like a lot except they are somewhat lacking in sound quality and get uncomfortable after awhile. Now that a think about it, I really don't like them much at all, except they are small and portable...so basically I want to get a new pair that are small and portable but that don't hurt and sound good. I read that the canal-type buds are more comfortable especially when you sleep and frequently have better sound quality, but I don't know how accurate that is. My budget is kinda tight, so roughly US$50 is the most I can afford to spend. Any recommendations?

hmm... if you have a sony portable player, or any decent hi-fi and an extension cable (if you need one) you can buy the ex71, ex51 or The Plug by koss. either that or the ex70's, but they're not all that good really. Aiwa make the VX100's which is another in ear type but that's all for under $50.... unless you have a spare $256 so you can go and buy the ER-4P's from Etymotic Research

Just some general comments, not specifically addressing anyones issues.

I've recently acquired a set of Aiwa HP-J30 behind-the-neck headphones and have been very impressed by them in terms of sound quality and their ability to block out practically ALL outside noise.

Comfort levels are greater than that compared to standard non neck-band earbuds but slightly less comfortable than your standard headphones.

The drawbacks I've heard of (but not experienced myself) include not being comfortable when lying in bed with them and loss of bass if they get wet i.e heavy jogging etc (they are reportedly waterproof).

The benefits I've gained are great sound quality, especially the bass, they are easily handled due to being so small and lightweight and they are relatively cheap.

Here is a link containing more info on them.

If you need to try a Koss headphone, all the Radio Shack 'phones are manufactured by Koss (so they really ARE the same thing) and I believe Radio Shack have many of their headphones open so you can try 'em out.

Personally, I can't use 'buds--they just don't stay in my ears. I usually use either the (sadly discontinued) Koss SportaPro foldables--they fold up pretty nicely, have rich bass and very crisp highs. I also like the Radio Shack Pro35 (Koss)--brilliant sound that will not distort under high volume. I just wish Koss would stop installing those stupid inline volume/mute buttons on their higher end headphones.

Here's another question to add to the pile: I'm interested in the noise-dampening headphones on the market. They're supposed to cut down on outside noise from aeroplanes and cars (I MUST havemy MD with me when I travel), but how does that affect the sound? And do these 'phones even sound good at all?
