bluetrain
I just purchased an MZ-NF810. This is my first minidisc recorder/player and I chose the NF810 because I wanted NetMD, microphone in and radio. For the past few months I've been surfing around looking for a portable audio player that would allow me to listen to large quantities of music, without being bulky. I also wanted something that would enable me to record interviews, ambient sounds and anything else (if I was so inclined). While the minidisc format is limited in upload capabilities, it seemed to be the best for what I wanted. Now getting to my main point of this post. I chose the 810 because of all the features it had. But looking throughout the Web, I haven't seen too many reviews on it. So here's my take on so far: While I am a MD novice, I am quite pleased with this unit. I have heard complaints that encoding songs at LP4 compression on Type-R recorders creates a "tinny" sounding song. But using the 810's virtual sound feature, the sound quality seems pretty darn good. I'm not sure if this is due to it being a Type-S recorder or because of the virtual sound. Regardless, it sounds good. The FM/AM/Weatherband/TV tuner works pretty well. I live in an area where mountains tend to impede on radio frequencies, but this units tuner picks up most frequencies as well as my car tuner. The TV tuner only picks up VHF stations (2-13), but it seems more of a novelty than anything else. The unit comes with a few items I could care less about -- car kit and special car remote. Perhaps if Sony nixed these items from the package, the unit would be a little bit less expensive. It's a pricey unit compared to some of Sharp's MDs and non-mic Sony units, but all in all I'm quite happy with it. With all its combined features (mic-in, netmd, radio, cheap memory, shock protection and the like), I couldn't imagine buying a different unit or an Ipod. Sussex Dave
I just got one of those too! It's also my first MD player. I went for it 'cos of the NetMD function, radio tuner, style and as a solution to my portable audio desires! I had considered a pure MP3 player... now I'm an advocate of MD all the way. I use the Nero Create Image > Mount Virtual CD > Simple Burn MD process without failure. I am very pleased with it. My only gripe is that FM reception isn't that good where I live (South Coast UK). I'm one of those who's very interested in seeing how the MD > PC question can be discussed and maybe answered one day. I'm not too bothered but it would be nice... See you all around! bluetrain
I began using the nero solution for the past two or three days, and it's a piece of cake. I know that it would be easier if sony would scrap its DRM, but as long as I can get my music on to the machine in a relatively easy manner, I'm not bothered. Like everyone else in this forum, I only wish they made audio uploads easier.
dpool2002
Does the remote control have a backlight? or does the Screen? Also, is there a line in and a line out? If not a line out, can i output to my computer using any of the outputs? Like the head phone one? Finally, can you plug in your own headphones into the remote? or do you have to use the included ones? Thanks!

No line out, just headphone. I have very successfully used the headphone out to connect to my pc card to play recorded radio shoes (Ross and Gervais). I bought new headphones as the cord on those supplied is very short, they work fine (Sony fontopia).
Guest Anonymous
I have another question, how long does it really take to put an mp3 onto the disc? I read (32x) in x mode and blah in this mode, if all i want is to put 80 minutes of mp3's on an 80 minute disc, how long would it take? Also, There are no other md players that could upload for example, an interview that i did, in non real time is there? For example, upload in (32x)? Thanks! KJ_Palmer
No, you can't record from the radio on these units. They're pretty much independent from the MD side of things, just drawing power from the battery. Maybe not such a bad thing as the reception tends to be highly variable on portables. Guest Anonymous
I just bought one of these and got it the other day. My only complaint, or woe more like it, is that i thought minidisc held 650mb of data on one 74min disc. Not that big of a deal. I am very pleased with it so far and actually use the carkit features. I do wish I had a regular line out so I wouldn't mess up the quality by accident, but its not the end of the world. I can't recommend this MD to anyone since this is my first one, but I'm very happy with it, nonetheless.
