SINep
How come I keep hearing about people using their line outs on there their MD players to a digital IN? I thought youd have to have an optical out on the MD and of course the optical IN on your audio i/o. Does this work? What sorta of cable do I need, cause i dont know if 1/8th and optical cables are the same or not. Can someone sheds some light on this for me? sudden
Some MD decks have optical out, must be that they mean.
mAjEsTiC
yeh as sudden said it must've been some typo or something...but to answer your question - no it doesn't work because the 3.5mm and toslink optic cables are made of totally different materials and are meant to transfer data in totally different ways...3.5mm uses a OFC wire and transfers thru analogue means wareas toslink uses fibre optics and transfers thru digital means with light pulses...they can't be interchanged or used together... SINep
I knew that obviously (audio and light are diff) but my digital in on my sound card doesnt look like a digital Toslink. It looks just like a 1/8th input. So I got confused there... Anyway, I just entered the world of MD and bought a Sharp MT15. It has a line out, line in, mic in. blah blah. I needed it for sound live sound recording. Now i guess the only way to xfer the audio to PC is via line out to line in. I have a Creative 5.1 Live! Plat at the moment and the noise floor on the line in is pretty loud as youd expect. I wonder how the noise floor will be from going: line out > Behringer Mixer > aardvark LX6 ( http://www.aardvarkaudio.com/aasd-v1/produ...s/lx6-main.html ) Im getting it cause I'd like 24bit/96khz recording at home, of course my MD files will still be 16bit/44.1... mAjEsTiC
lol...yes i agree...though i feel that the US isn't as deprived of MD technology as Australia is...i mean they hardly have anything here (as in hardly any selection of brands)...it just recently started to get popular... :? oh well i guess we gotta live with that...but yeh i wish u the best in finding a nice deck for yourself... sudden
Check the Decks section at minidisc.org http://www.minidisc.org/equipment_browser.html There you can see what models have optical out (not so many).
SINep
How about a net MD player for 129$us... I know about all the hacking shit to the unit... But could yall simplify this a bit more for me? Do you basicly have to flash the MD player? Or is this all software done...
SINep
or here... http://216.239.57.104/search?q=cache:5-v0J...&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 I can get that just for tranfer over opti... Id rather record with my sharp...
mAjEsTiC
the N707 is an alright unit...optic recordings can be done from that unit and also it has NetMD capabilities...hacking this unit is done through its software i think...just changing a few settings so that it enables the full functionality of the top of the range units...very handy when u r on a budget... and yes it's a good idea to stick to your sharp recorder for recording...sony units have been annoying me because of the fact that they can't adjust the recording levels on the fly... SINep
Are there any Players/Decks with spdif? All I keep seeing is toslink...
mAjEsTiC
i think that from the MDSJE780 and upwards all have one SPDIF IN...but i've only seen a SPDIF OUT on the MDSJA333ES deck...
bcutlerj
I think its that Mz-r1 (correct me if I'm wrong) it was the first sony model, and it has an optical out. you can find one on ebay, but it'll be 10 years old. good luck
mAjEsTiC
yep ur right the portable MD Recorder that had an optic out was the MZ-R1 (released back in 93)...it's pretty hard to track one down these days but then again you might be lucky enough to find one....if it were me i'd stick with a deck...but i would'n mind buying a working R1 as a collector's item...
