Skippy discs (Maxell vs JVC)

I saw a post mentioning that some manufacturer's discs skip more often than others, and I can confirm one particular comparison.

I have always used JVC Crystal Gold discs. I just liked the way they looked, and I got a deal on a bunch of them, so I have 15-20 of them in regular use.

Recently I bought a box of Maxell "colour" discs, because I wanted to color-code our band practices. (Tuesday practice is on Pink discs, Thursday on Blue, for example.)

I have recorded on four of the Maxell's now, and three of them have skips. I *never* experienced a skip on the JVC discs that was not due to user error or a bad sound source (like a poorly-ripped MP3).

One of the Maxells has 5 skips on it, another has 3 and the last one (not full) has one skip. The fourth Maxell is full and has no skips.

I think I will always buy the JVCs from now on!!

I hope this information is useful for others.

i agree with sudden...it's best that you try out a few discs first to figure out which are reliable...i myself usually use either prisms or ES MD's when i record live since these are worth the extra cost plus knowing that the MD will be hard to screw up (i.e. has lots of skips in it) is also another plus and justifies the price tag...but all discs can go wrong even the best ones... :?
