Guest Anonymous
Hi Newbie here, didn't do my research enough obviously aaaaargh bought the MZ-N710 FAR too quiet for loud UK London underground. Could someone very kindly advise me the cheapest 5mW output MD, just in case the shop agrees to exchange? I'm not bothered about downloading from internet as my computer is crap. Many thanks
KJ_Palmer
How about the Sharp MD-MT290. It doesn't major on looks and is a bit chunky, but has great recording features (no NetMD but that doesn't seem a problem) and 10mW x 2 output and decent headphones - perfect for the tube . Either that or an older Sony (eg. MZ-N707) or Sharp if they have any.
Guest Anonymous
Just got my 710 and was very worried about what I'd heard about it being so quiet. Making it loud is REALLY easy though. There is NO HACK required here (you shouldn't hack it anyway, or you'll invalidate your waranty. It's a beautiful machine.) Read p 34 and p 35 in your instruction manual (or the section headed "Adjusting the sound - Virtual Surround 6 Band Equaliser)." The automatic settings that it came with are quiet so as not to ruin people's hearing (and to stop SOny being sued - I guess). What you do is: 1/ On your remote Press Sound repeatedly until your display says "SOUND". 2/ Press and HOLD the Sound Button for about 2 seconds or more. 3/ Slide the jog lever repeatedly (either left or right, it doesn't matter) to select the sound mode. 4/ NOTE all of the other options are very quiet (ie HEAVY and POPS etc). SO you have to select CUSTOM 1 5/ Press the jog lever (press it IN, like a push button). 6/ You should now have a row of little lines. This represents your 6 Band Equaliser !!! (Definitely DON'T throw your beautiful new MD away young lady!) 7/ Each little line can be moved up and down to make that particular frequency higher or lower. 8/ Move the volume button repeatedly. Each time you move it up (ie volume higher), the little line will move up, and down for down (of course). TO set that first little line, push the jog dial to the RIGHT. 9/ Now you'll be on the 2nd little line, and so you should do the same again, gor each little line. 10/ Press the button IN when you're done. Hey Presto! A REALLY LOUD mini disc player. Look forward to shouting at you all when we're older.
sharkymark
Did this really make a big difference Philip. I'm about to buy a N910 and I'm also worried about the low power output (although acoording to AV Land it's the same output as the Japanese model). I was thinking of importing one from Japan but, if this does the trick I'm going to buy it at my regular Sony dealer.
sudden
It's a nice idea but can that realy make up for the weak 1.2mW+1.2mW headphone amp? Besides, max volume on a weak amp is not the same as normal volume on a stronger amp. Even though the decibel are the same. The bass dies at the top of the scale. Guest Anonymous
Yes! Once you've changed the 6 band equaliser (everything you need to know will be in the manual) you'll notice a BIG change. Erm ... if you're going to get a different model though, check before hand to see that you can adjust the equaliser settings. Promise you won't regret it. I'm really loving mine. Oh, and I've read loads about the sony software and was DREADING it, but it's ONLY slow to CONVERT your MP3s to the ATTRAC format (admittedly this does take ages). The actual copy process is VERY fast indeed! About the files taking up loads of room in your hard drive, well of course they do, so simply right click on them in the "Recording" screen and hey presto - all gone (check the size of your hard drive before and after copying, and then before and after deleting - you'll be very happy). Also, deleting the ATTRAC copies ABSOLUTELY kills the check in and check out process (I experimented by copying a song, and the deleting the ATTRAC version - and was able to copy the same thing over and over until my MD was full. Just to test though). Hope this helps :-)
Guest Anonymous
Oops, sorry forgot to add: Sony always give you crap headphones these days. Obviously saving money on crap accessories, like the case and the phones. When I bought my tape playing walkman a few years ago, it came with this fantastic pair rather like 'ear plugs'. MDR-ED21LP Sony Fontopia plus Earphones (can't find a pic of them, sorry, probably google for them). These aren't quiet, and I've never had them distort (well, not never, but you really have to try). I can never get the normal kind to stay in my ears. I'd highly recommend them, although I think you can only get the long version now (do check with sony to see if the shorter version is available - otherwise - added to the remote, it would make for rather a lot of cord). They're very comfy and never fall out.
Guest Anonymous
Just been reading (and posting) in a similar thread - can anyone direct me to a .pdf manual please? Haven't been able to locate one anywhere.
ben1977uk
Hi, I'm really disappointed in the low sound output from my new MZ-N710. Its OK for some pop music, but when listening to classical/choral stuff you just can't hear the quiet bits whilst on the train. Looking at some alternative earphones on Sony's website, the MDREX71SLB model state: "Closed inner ear type, 80% more powerful than other Sony Fontopia models". Would these make any difference? I've tried the trick of setting each band of the graphic equaliser to max but it causes some distrotion during the loud bits. Cheers, Ben

Cheers, BenThe EX71's are not very sensitive, and thus you will probably get an even lower volume with the EX71's than with the stocks (this was the case when I had my MZ-N10 + EX71's) If you want to try and compensate for the poor output, you could try either building/buying a portable headphone amp, or buy some sensitive cans like the Sennheiser PX100's for example. Guest Anonymous
I was just about to buy th n710 earlier in the week, but this minidisc has had so many complaints that I steered away from it. The lower model the n510 was very loud. I think this has the same output as normal models. I had it earlier in the week, and vol 30 out of 100 was adequately loud as hell. But if you want a mic input for voice/music recording etc I'd suggest you try a sharp model
