shred
Like a dumb@$$, I bought a sharp 702MK on Half.com (a subsidiary of ebay). After one day of owning it, I took it outside- it was very foggy that day. The buttons stoped responding. I let it sit to "evaporate" as the manual recomends and after 5 or 6 hours (not 1 as described) it recovered. Since then it has gone in and out twice after long trips outside in winter weather, but up till now it has recovered. Today I tried to use the thing and it has stoped working merely from siting in my room for a few days, no mosture or environmental effects. It will turn on automaticaly when I insert a disc, and sometimes (depending on the disc) auto start the first track. But I cannot change the volume, stop playing, change the bass, anything else. I've tried both the built in butons and the remote. It seems to work for breif seconds when I change the disc Im playing, but it only works once. Is this familiar? anybody know if its fixable? The guy I bought from is ignoring my emails...
mAjEsTiC
it is fixable but i think you have to take it in to a repair shop to get it fixed up...this may cost a bit since it's outside the warranty period...this happens to older units after they've take a fair beating...(i.e the 722 unit i have here the buttons don't work @ all...) BerkY
Not related to the question but, Majestic, just how many units DO you have?
mAjEsTiC
quite a few...haven't counted them all yet...but yeh most of the ones that i've previously owned i've already sold off...just a few remain still with me...
shred
thanks for the response maj... err so how much am I looking at, price wise? any clue? When you say "a bit" are you understating or being literal ??
mAjEsTiC
sorry i should'v phrased it better...what i mean is that i really don't know how much it'll cost to get it repaired...since i've never gotten my units repaired when they were out of their warranty period...i would say that it probably won't cost an arm and a leg to fix up but it would cost a fair amount to get it fixed up...say double~triple digits in A$... BerkY
More than double digits... triple digits in aussie dollars... It is always pricey to get things repaired especially when it is more than just a couple years passed its warranty period. Thats how companies maximise profits these days.. Aint it crap? A company official asked me once "If you owned Sony would you rather earn profits from only the sales or from sales AND parts"... I rest my case... mAjEsTiC
from Sharp?? i wouldn't say so...Sony maybe but sharp don't seem to charge as much...friend had an old mini system from them that went bust and he took it back for repairs...only costed his about A$80 to fix up i think...it wasn't that much really... BerkY
Could be, but it also depends on the parts too and which part is malfunctioning. My Sony VCR cost me 160 bucks to get it repaired and my Hifi cost me a tad more than 100 bucks... But these are all Sony. And Sony parts aint cheap. As I said before thats why I buy only Made in Japan Sony's nowadays. Should be a lesson for everyone. Made in Japan Sony's hardly fail... mAjEsTiC
yeh true...but most companies don't make stuff in japan now...i mean Sony are shifting to china and other countries for manufacturing now...so expect to see a decline in products being made in Japan...but yes products from Japan hardly fail...but like everything else they eventually do fail...and when they do it would be about time to upgrade i would think because it takes a LONG time for them to go bust... BerkY
Exactly, our old Sony midi HiFi we bought back in 1992 had all its parts made in japan, speakers made in germany and it works better than my mini hifi... The CD player gived much better sound. I am just a bit pissed off about it. I paid 895 bucks for my hifi in 1998 (got it at Myer or Grace Bros @ NSW). Could have bought something made in japan at that price. Ah well you live you learn as alanis morissette says, hehe...
BJ
Could you just crack open the unit and re-seat the ribbon cable connecting the buttons to the motherboard? Possibly blow it out with compressed air? Clean the contacts? Just trying to save you some $$. It may even be cheaper to buy a newer unit on eBay than to get yours repaired. Hate to say that, cos the 702 is a nice machine. Good luck.
