Guest Anonymous
Can the older MD deck record or play a HI MD ? IF CAN I WON'T change my old md equipment
Guest Anonymous
No, older equipment can read and record to the original minidisc specs. The new Hi-MD can read and record the original discs, re-formatted original discs that offer about twice as much storage space, and the new Hi-MD disc, which offers almost eight times as much space. AgMattRed
So in other words you're going to have to buy a new player but it can use your old discs.

Guest Anonymous
Its claer to me that older equipment is not able to use HI-MD media out of the package as its in the wrong format. But would it be possible to reformat this new media in my old player? Wouldn't it be recognized as a "normal" Minidisc but with more capacity? Of course Sony could prevent this by changing the cartridge slightly, but on the other side using old media in Hi-MD equipment is just a matter of reformatting it ..... Old media reformatted can contain 300MB (170 before). This would mean that new 1GB Media reformatted in old equipment could theoretically contain more than twice the music, kind of 160 Minutes SP on one disc Or am I assuming too much? highlandsun
Part of the HiMD format is a narrower track pitch. Older hardware will not be able to track these narrower lines. Drop the subject, it's pointless.

Wouldn't it be recognized as a "normal" Minidisc but with more capacity? I would never assume that any old player is able to read or write more capacity than current MD media. As an practical irrelevant question one could try to format new media in old drives - but this wil format it to old capacity with no advantage on comparison to using cheaper old media. Guest Anonymous
Guest, Hi-MD is to MD as DVD is to CD.
PDOG58
I am a bit confused as to compatability of recording. I know you can record onto old MD, but if you record on the old MDs with Hi-MD equipment can they be played back on old MD equipment. Judging by what have see, I would think not. Guest Anonymous
Hmm, after reading all material, it is undecided, if the new recorders can create old style SP recordings. Some machine translated pages say yes, others say no. My gut feeling is yes. But I strongly suggest to wait, until the recorders are available. Then we'll see. How can they reformat a disc that has stuff inside?
highlandsun
You don't. Reformatting a disc means wiping out all of its old content.
Guest Anonymous
that's what I thought. But if I choose not to, does that mean I can't record the remaining of the songs on the 74 min. format? As there are times I del. some of the old songs on the 74 min., and record some new ones on it. Leland
The best strategy is to migrate everything to SonicStage or other PC medium then use NetMD to replace old MD "playlists" onto new 1 gig or reformatted MD's.
Guest Anonymous
hey, if you have that many minidisc players, what minidisc media do you buy? the regular gold standard or ES and is there really a difference?
Leland
I buy the ES, but not for sound quality. The shell is made of really nice plastic. Best of all, the white surface is slightly rough so you can quickly lable the discs with a pencil, then erase it when you reuse the discs. Pencil compatibility is the key reason I use the ES discs. jadeclaw
Quote another things I will ask: can hi-md disc play in older net md? :wacky:Hi-MD - Discs == No. Old-Md-Disc formatted in Hi-MD == No. Old Disc formatted in old recorder, then filled in LP2 or LP4 Mode via PC == Maybe, but that has to be checked out, when the recorders are available. Hope, that this will end this thread for a while.
