NO IN-DASH UNITS AVAILABLE IN USA

If you've transitioned your cassett and CD music format to MD, as recommended in the past by manufacturers and marketers, you now have a real problem being here. You can't get a new in-dash MD receiver anymore (well, there is ONE expensive Sony model available, but that's it, and who knows how long it's going to be around... or any MD appliances at all?). They want you to have to re-transition to the crappy DVD-CD-MP3 format, so THEY can make more mega-bucks convincing consumers to mount DVD screens on their dashboards. Great idea! That ought to raise the human road-kill numbers too, by increasing the percentage of ding-bat drivers, those who yammer too much too long on their cell phones and, now, those who like to play a DVD while they're cruisin'. Yeeha, how cool man! Ought to be illegal, but since it isn't (apparently) the insurance industry ought to be taking it to court. (Hmm, maybe they've made a deal with the anti-MD music industry, too?!) PUKE!

Learn how to LOOK! Kenwood's MD car units can be ordered from any authorized Kenwood dealer across the U.S. I got mine last year; still love it. Paid just over $200.

One thing about MiniDisc: It's always going to be a niche format. If you're into it hard core, you have to realize that stuff is readily available, but you just have to dig a bit. (For example: Want a high-end U.S. deck? Plenty of Sony MDS-E10 pro decks are available)

....this is just a way of life for MiniDisc people throughout the States...

Yeah, thanks Leland. But (Ms.?) 8... My daughter has a portable Sharp MD recorder/player to use online, with a cassette player adapter for use in her car. I've got a Sony home deck for recording MDs from CDs, cassettes, radio, etc. We got these units back in '01 for transitioning our formats to MD, which we did. I even purchased, same year, two in-dash MD receivers and installed them my car and truck (Sony MDX-C800REC, which is also a recorder!). The one in my car was ripped-off, so I got another same model, again from Crutchfield's online site. In '03 my Honda was stolen, and though it was found, the unit had been ripped out again. When trying to get another one, it wasn't available anywhere, so I got a Blaupunkt MD70...a good one, but no longer a recorder in the car. There were fewer brands available by then too. See, I've been quite experienced in LOOKING online, because there were no MD receivers for cars I could ever find anywhere else...not in this state anyway (WA). Two months ago, the Sony unit in my truck stopped playing MDs, so I started LOOKING again online for in-dash units. Guess what...MD car units in 99% of online catalogs are actually NOT available. The sites I tried to order from (once, Ms. 8, a KMD44) just haven't deleted them from their listings! One site I located is selling expensive units--$500 & up--that only have Asian/Euro radio band frequencies; lousy for here. There's only a couple of sites that say they have a Pioneer MEH-P500 and/or a Sony MDX-CA680X, but even if they are available they are expensive (...you want to spend $400 or more for a car player?) Most manufacturers US sites no longer offer in-dash MD units, Ms. 8...Sony sends you to Crutchfield who has the CA680X and that's all, Clarion-none, Blaupunkt-none, Kenwood (when you search for MD) lists only three (one's not a receiver) but you have to hope a local store will have one, or at least can get one for you (good luck)! YOU ought to look again. Your experience was a year ago.

Like I said, Sister Cantaker, Kenwood still has the KMD-44 readily available. You're not going to find it in a local store, but any Kenwood retailer can order one for you.

It's very cool that you've owned so many MD car units over the years, Sister. You're a pure user. It's good to know there are true MiniDisc people out there like Sister Cantaker.

Oh my, I'm so embarrassed and depressed to be accused as an impure and untrue MD user. Please please please uh...8 (?), gee, I never said I'm an experienced pro-mder like you. I'm not even a member of this site and now I guess I can't be, so I'll leave and never return. (BTW, Sis...how'd you know?) Boohoo...

I was serious about respecting the fact that you're a pure user.

I didn't appreciate attaching "Ms." to my name, hence the "Sister Cantaker" response.

At any rate, let's get back to the topic.
