Will all the units being released have a jog dial?

Although I have found out that the NH900 deffinately has one, the other units including the budget NH600 look to have one as well, but I have found no info to confirm it.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Yeah, that protruding knob sure looks ambiguous. I think it must have some functionnality, they wouldn't take up that much space for nothing. But i don't know. I don't like units having a big AA battery buldge in the back either. In those pictures they never show the back of the unit.

about the jog dial.... uhh the NH900 seems to be the only unit with the jog dial..but i find that's pretty dumb..seeing that with these new units there will be a lot more tracks to browse through n i havne't heard ne thing bout jumping to tracks yet..so it's something i gotta look into and

about the bulge at the back..here's what to do to know which unit have it or not check out minidisc.org...n then click on the tab browser. at the top of the page..then look for look for either HI MD which is right at the top of the page or look under the heading Recorders then check SONY..n click on all the very 1st option..then while browsing the units simply check for the type of battery they use..there's Lilon n Gumstick types http://minidisc.org/images/sony_mznh1_liion.jpg if that link works then u'll notice that these batteries r flat...so i'm concluding that the units that use these batteries don't have the hump at the back cuz MDs only use 1 type of battery either the lilon the gum stick or the AA..now once the model is listed to b using an AA..then there's a hump at the back if not n it uses the flat batteries then there's no hump..ok.. .....so now u know in the futre what to look for... enjoy..

but in the mz-nh900 there is the small(flat) battery and the external AA battery pack... i've a questions, the battery pack is the big and black things below the MD? or it is the stand..? or the function is double, stand + battery pack.. i think it's a little bigger than they can do...!

another questionsis for the availability of this type of battery... here in Italy i have never seen it on sales, and researching in internet i've not found a lot....

and finally... what's the life of that's battery, how many cicle of rechearging they can do?

The thing under the NH900 is the charging stand.

The battery case is either screwed on, like it was on the R30 or it is (much more likely) a separate case, connected via a cable.

The gumpacks should last as many cycles as any other rechargeable battery of the same technology.

Ya know, for as long as I have had these units, one of my biggest dissapointments was when my R50 battery wouldn't charge anymore.

It almost rendered that model useless as a portable device.

It now remains tethered to my home stereo rig mostly because of the darn gum battery

I was so happy when the R700 ( I sure hope I see the new HI-MD R700 here in the US, it's almost perfect) was able to use a standard AA battery.

That AA battery case thing on the back of the R50 never did work well for me either. It just never attached tightly enough (cheezy) and seemed to make the unit hard (clumzy) to handle.

I can't tell you the unsuccessful times I tried to get that thing into concerts with the AA battery pack. That stupid gum battery only held an hour charge and took overnight to recharge...and...well...it was just too crazy and unreliable to deal with.

Now, with a simple AA loaded (2100 mah Panasonic rechargable) it "never" goes dead. I can't believe somtimes I'll swear to get 8-10 hours recording (LP4). Plus, in my pants pocket ('cause I'm paranoid) I may carry a AA backup that will get me thru.

My point: If I could buy a replacement gum battery at Walgreens in the middle of the night, when I needed it, for 50 cents, I would trust it.

By the way, how much are those gum replacements anyway?

So what, that the new (old) models using AA have a hump on the back (unless you simply need the advantage of the thinner units).

Now, if the new 900 has a usable pitch/ half speed function (as a musician I use this for transcribing) I may consider.

But that darn gum battery...

Mikey

P.S. Did I read somewhere about a Cheryl Crow concert on an airplane today, or is that put off as well?

Mikey,

It's well known that rechargeable batteries will eventually lose their ability to hold a charge. So eventually, you will have to replace it. From what I read, you can get the gumstick battery at places like minidisco.com. I think I saw them for $30. That is a bit expensive, but proprietary batteries usually are expensive.

And yeah, today is supposed to be the day that Cherl Crow does a live show from an airline for the official launch of Sony's Connect service... which is/was supposed to be the official launch of HiMD, too.

Doesn't mean much... they still pushed back the release until June...

Mmmm....looks like an NH900 for me then (if it ever comes out in the UK! blink.gif ).

My current portable is a Sharp MD-MT88, and while it makes excellent recordings the titling procedure of pushing a button a million times to get to the desired character is a pain in the bum.

A jog dial would make things a lot easier.
