SI: New Sony S-Series Walkman Goes Live Accidentally ? Full Pictures And Specifications

Well, the new S-Series is essentially a slam-dunk at this point with this uncovered listing of the device at materiel.net, a French-based entertainment retailer. The full specifications of the S-Series Walkman are an attractive update the series and confirms to our initial leak. The 8gb Sony NWZ-S544 (129 and 16gb Sony NWZ-S545 with a 16:9 (320 x 240, 262k colors) 2.4 inch QVGA LCD screen feature built-in stereo speakers on the front of the player to share or enjoy music out loud. Sony says 42 h Audio and 6.5 H Video battery life, but we all know that means at 128kbps music quality.

The player is drag n’ drop, which is nothing new for Sony but still great – it also boasts compatibility with iTunes and Windows Media Player as usual. FM radio (with 30 presets) strengthens the appeal and codec support includes mp3, WMA, and AAC. Video quality is up to 30fps and can play back the usual formats like H264/AVC, MP4 and WMV. Sony has also included voice recording with a built-in microphone. I’m almost wondering if they should add a microphone port and make a the future Minidisc hybrid. The earphones included with the new S-Series aren’t too hot, and we didn’t spot any mention of digital amplifier, clear bass and so forth but I’m sure Sony is just trying to offer a competitively priced music/video player with good functionality.

Anyone notice it seems to have a built-in stand? I like this thing. I think it’s the best S-Series they’ve made yet, because this thing is usable in alot more situations than the average mp3/video player.

I like it, and even though it lacks the gapless I crave, I'd buy 1 if it hits 32gb. It's hott looking in black BTW.

I liked it too ..even though I'm not sure how well small speakers will work .

I hope they are little better than cheap mobile phones .

Well, the small speakers aren't a deal breaker by any means, but it'd be nice if the sounded half-decent.

Indeed it does seem like many sites have given props to SI, but then a lot have not and just quote the material.net site as the source.

It's ok, it doesn't really bother me much anymore these days. The only time it really annoys me is when the Chinese sites rip off my pictures with zero credit whatsoever. Sometimes they even hotlink the images and use our bandwidth!

p.s. I wonder when Sony is going to announce this thing already. The projected announcement date I have is still a little while away.

I personally was expecting sony to give in and announce it once the leak was made, but I guess this is not their style.

My assumption is sony will hold off and announce it before IFA.

Personally I think it looks quite nice, it's a new direction for Walkman. It does feel it's aiming for teenagers who want to put they're music on while annoyingly on public transport, if the in-built speakers are that good, I'm sure that's why they will sell well. lol...

New public transport here do make announcements , requesting people not to use speaker for listening music .

Loud music playing in the US on busses or trains is prohibited. I work for NYCT, and we get driven crazy by even ADULTS playing music on the public transportation - but we're not police officer's, so we can do nothing about it. This will just worsen the problem, unless they release a 32gb version - so I can drown it out w/MY music!!!

I checked google and various sites and so far nothing has emerged, if anything is to debut it would happen at IFA in early september with a press release most likely on the 31st of august, but the odd thing is, the new S is on sale already but no one has bought it or at least got it delivered. So if no A series debuts then I doubt the X will drop in price leaving me without a new mp3 player for while.
