Brewsky
Amid the excitement of the new portable Hi-MD walkmans, I'm wondering if anybody has heard of plans to release a Hi-MD home theatre deck. I was looking at the sonystyle website (.ca, not .com) and I noticed the section on home MD decks was gone. I guess my question is, has anybody heard about home theatre Hi-MD deck? Christopher
Welcome. Unfortunately, this has been discussed before. I'll restate things for you - since Hi-MD is still very new to the market we aren't very sure of it's future. If the new format is a success then there is no doubt that a Hi-MD deck will be on the horizon, but since only one portable unit is available at this time things are still a bit hazy. Keep an eye on minidisc.org's front page for any new Hi-MD announcements..
PDOG58
With most of the Hi-MD set to be released in July, i think it will still be a while until they release decks and car systems. My COMPLETELY uneducated guess would say somewhere around Christmas or Mid-Jamuary is when stuff like that will hit the market. you need to see how regular Hi_MD sales are before that happens. Although, I go by a little differant opinion. If I were Sony, I would have released a full arsonal right away. That way, Hi-MD might sell faster if they saw a WIDE variety of option. I am getting Hi-MD as soon as it comes out with HOPES that they will later release a car unit. That is really why I want Hi-MD. If they dont release a car unit, then it will make me VERY upset. Jimmix
I agree with PDOG58 in that Sony should release a full series of devices because minidisc should be seen as a media not an "mp3" kinda' player so it could replace cassette media. In that case for example you could record music and hear it in you car or your computer (in case a computer had minidisc drive just like when every computer had a floppy drive). Then if you went to a field trip you could take your minidisc boombox and hear those same melodies. Even you could have a minidisc camera where you could copy your photos just like the floppy disk mavica but with much more space. That would be a major breakthrough for minidisc because it would be widely accepted just because THERE IS NOTHING IN THE MARKET that does the same thing for the same price!!!!!! What do you guys think???
PDOG58
Jimmix, I have been sayin what you said since basically the first day they announced that Hi-MD was coming out. Some agree. Some Disagree. Personally, I think Hi-MD is a VERY flexable format that SHOULD replace audio cassette. I love your comment about how MD should be considered a media rather than just another audio compression format. I never really thought of that before. That is a really great point. I'm gonna steal that idea if you dont mind.
crazeybt1
yup i agree..but i guess sony don't want that to happen who knows..once that starts to happen MDs might take over err thing..haha...they probably don't want it competing with like memo sticks, cds n dvds??? but they know what they're doing right..i mean this things been out since 1992 n today it's still in it's toddler stages..look at pc hardware like hard drives..i mean 1 drive is like 250 gigs who would have thought..but Sony better watch out cuz flash hdd gonna take off for the portable n if price was an issue it won't be in a while...sony still got the lead on MB per buck..they should hear us lil ppl 4 once..hmm.....i wonder if they even cater that much for the English market...i mean have u ever noticed that most electronics arn't really designed according to our culture..but to those in the East..don't get me wrong we love em but..just think.. the bottons keep getting smaller n smaller..navigating them keeps geting more difficult....dem chineese n japanese fingers n hands smaller than ours true...check out how err one was like oh...X box controller was all clumsy..n what now it's one of the most comfortable huh :whatever:

M.Linc
I am getting Hi-MD as soon as it comes out with HOPES that they will later release a car unit. That is really why I want Hi-MD. If they dont release a car unit, then it will make me VERY upset.I'm happy enough with a NetMD and a cassette adapter. What I want to see, though, is a line input on the front of every car stereo head unit around. I want to take any player (MiniDisc, cassette, mp3, what-have-you) and just connect to any car stereo from the player's headphone jack, adjust the volume a bit as necessary, and listen away. I'm surprised this isn't already being done now. It would eliminate the need to create new car stereos every time a new music playback technology is introduced. "Installation" is a lot easier, as well. (I do have a line input on a Sony compact stereo unit I use in one of my rooms at home. If I want to play a NetMD disk, which the unit doesn't support, I just connect my NetMD player. No more cursing about obsolete equipment!) sirpilf
yea we can all dream that there will be car stereos and home stereo systems and digital cameras that all use Hi-MD but i doubt it will ever happen. I doubt their goal of minidisc is to make a new media even tho it would be really good. took 12 years for sony to let you put files other than music on minidiscs (or am i mistaken cuz i thought i saw some sort of MD-data discs before but i dont know how they are suppose to work). So it would take 20 years before we could use them in digital cameras haha. all i care about is if they give us few people who use minidisc a chance to get a carstereo and homestereo and hi-md computer drive, so we can use minidisc like our own media format. i dont care if the majority of people dont use it, they dont have to but i like it so i think sony should give us the opportunity atleast. sirpilf
oh there is a camera. but anyways they should have all these products use the SAME disc... like once ur done recording video on ur digital camera u can upload it to ur computer then use it to make a new audio MD. and so on.
