im not sure what hdd means... but im assuming its like an ipod or any hard rive music player.

your dreaming. and so was i. im hoping in the future that clie's and hi-mds and cameras will be able to communicate to each other and transfer files.

sorry, hdd = hard disk drive.

i don't really mean the music players, but actual portable hard disk drives used for storage.

eg. http://www.freecom.com/ecProduct_detail.as...=FHD%2DXS+20+GB

i know the new iriver supports "usb on the go" which means you could plug a usb camera etc in, and it would download the data to the dap's hard drive, and free up your camera. ie use it as a truly portable storage device, with no pc needed to facilitate things.

i suppose i just want the best of both worlds, a hi-md for music, and a hdd to store music on without the need for a pc to act as a go-between.

Hmm, most modern digicams conform to the USB mass storage standard, Hi-MD conforms as well, so it might be possible to dump data files from MD onto the iRiver as well.

But music in Atrac. No I don't think so.

well then, assuming this is correct, this would also work the other way... hi-md would make a perfect backup for digital camera's. you know how tons of c.labs muvo's have been cannibalised for their cflash storage? imagine being able to use a £5 1Gb backup cartridge in the hard wearing form factor of the hi-md?

also whilst i suppose the possibilty that data could be offloaded from the hi-md to a hdd without a pc is nice, the real seelling point would be if it could convert audio data from a hdd to atrac3 on the hi-md. yes it could be done in realtime, but you'd be there for quite a while sad.gif

actually the above would only work with a dap, since i dont think any poratble hdd supports playing data from them, since they'sd need a battery, processor, etc...

back to te drawing board.

 ..LOL.. probably i am.. but i'm really speaking in terms of price per MB...$7 for a gig is better than $20+ for a few hundred MB..i got a iomega 250 MB drive..spent 1??.?? can't remember the exact amount..usb powered but a bit slow when comes to huge files....n i was also comparing size i mean my drive is' approx 6.5" x 4.5" where as most MDs just about 3" x 3" (just off my head measurements) ..when i started buying flash mem cards...i practically stoped using my zip drives to transfer date.. just the cards cuz they're way faster n i haven't bought ne of the usb 2 compatable cards yet but i'm sure when i do i''ll have to do something with my zip drive n discs..cuz today zip discs buck per MB is still high...(with HI MD coming out..it's gonna force flash mem card makers to lower prices..cuz there's this 4 gig card out that's bout $400+) not good..not good at all

250MB-Drive? Then you have nothing to do with 'Click of Death', as that affected a Series of ZIP100 parallelport drives.

And that was in the early years...

Speaking of price, try Ebay. You pay usually less than 1/3rd than regular price for ZIP250 discs. ZIP100 discs are a lot cheaper than that...

The only problem will be postage from outside Antigua, so check these rates first before bidding.

Hi-MD or not, it won't push the price of memory cards a lot down, as that is dependend on the price of the memory chips itself.

Yeah, there is no real spec to feed data from one storage device to the next. The most recent thing I can think of would have been the DC memory cards, but you'd have to have a VMU on one end to initiate transfer. Those things were neato. The iRiver, I guess, can do that too. That is pretty cool. Cheers to that ever-praised device.

It's not at all unlikely we'll see something like that become more common. Things like PicBridge are working towards cutting out the PC between printers and digital cameras, for instance.

In the future, more devices just might come packed with enough operating parameters to transfer between one device to the next, but that would require pulling teeth and having a consumer electronic industry as a whole come to one specification.

well shipment is my last problem..i get stuff offa the net but gotta pull strings to get it here cheap..cuz here they bust ur a$$ with duty at customs.. don't talk about ordering MDs from up there n clearing them at customs..u pay like more than half the price in our currency.for instance then the MZ-N900 is U.S. 279.95 (@minidisco) ..my final costs would look something like this... $279.95 * 66% = 184.78 + 279.95 = $464.71 + $20 (other expenses)= U.S $484.71 n that's just the price for all the known expenses...other expenses might fall on me etc.. but to me..it's worth it u know..cuz the Sony dealer here..they MAD..i'd have to pay at least U.S $530+ for that same unit u have no idea..but to yall that might b like crazy n what not..but to us here it's just a way of life ....(altho there's stores here u'd get it for less than the$530)
