the reason its USB 1.1 is probably becuase:

a) too much power to write any faster at this technology level (requires heat and magnetism to write)

but if sony comes out with a Hi-MD disk drive for the PC, that wouldn't be a problem, now would it?

P.S. USB2.0 is much faster than firewire tongue.gif

my friend altho this is ur opinion..it's not accurate information USB 2.0 is not "much " Faster than firewire according to what ur using either for, the speeds may vary for instance firewire would b the way to go for just transfering pics from ur digi cam. to pc....where as i'd say USB 2.0 is is best for portable HDD n cd burners etc...(altho USB 2.0 is rated a lil faster than firewire...that speed is sometimes affected due to the fact that USB 2.0 uses more processor (or overal system power) when operating than Firewire...( u know how overheads are...they often prevent u from using all ur resourses to ur heart's desire)

The difference between Firewire 400 and USB 2.0 is slight at best. The former has a maximum bandwidth of 400 Mbps and the latter 480 Mbps, or 50MB/s vs. 60MB/s. The likelyhood of any device seeing those speeds are not likely, at best you're going to see half of those speeds (say 25-30MB/s. Remember that your HDs usually achieve bursts of 60+ MB/s, but usually much less, around 30-40 on the average). This of course, varies wildly depending on hardware, drivers, OS, etc (that PCI Firewire card will likely be slower vs. USB on a mainboard connected directly-simplified greatly).

Or, in other words, in most cases with most devices, you're not likely to notice that much difference between FireWire 400 and USB 2.0.

The biggest kicker thus far with HiMDs is with the optical pickups which has max bandwidth of 9.8Mbps (taken from MD.org faq). Assuming that this is thereoretical maximum burst speed, then overall your MD will achieve anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 of that rated speed. So USB 1.1 is more than enough to handle all of the current HiMD duties.

This will probably change greatly with introduction of future HiMD generations, but for now, even with faster bus speeds, we're not going to see any benefits because of the optical pickup's speed. Perhaps using USB 2.0 or Firewire would give you better latency, perhaps not.

hmm...i'm thinking usb powered i wonder how good that's gonna b....i've had a bad experience with MZG750 the AM/FM unit..some months after purchase the head phone port just won't work...n what i found out was that some way some how there's a connection with the remote port n the head phone port n i think it's the remote port that powered the remote..i'm saying this to say..these units r gonna be powered via usb.. and it would real bad if something's not just right n the usb powering messes with the unit bearing in mind i've never owned ne usb powered units b4 ( does ne one know if USB got power surges?)

Hmm, Crazey,

that looks more to me like a connector losing its solder joint, or a bad joint from the beginning...

Can happen with any equipment, where the connector isn't mounted mechanically into the case, but soldered on a PCB instead.

Had this problem on countless CB-rigs - so giving the PA and speaker connector joints a touch up was standard procedure...

nah i checked that out..n the remote n head phone port is riged onto the board tight...the soldering is huge it's not moving at all..that's not the case at all.. wish it was.....like say ur operating the unit n u put ur finger on some of the solder ends it burns don't know y..but i'm just leaving it that way ..i just us the unit to charge batteries ne way
