ive been using md for years now but i still have a normal non netmd unit because i prefered it at the time, but that is besides the point, my three questions are:

1. how important is the digital amp or lack there of on the hi-md units, in the gear section it says the mz-nhf800 does not have one but the units higher up do, and i was wondering what the main difference is in relationship to recording and listening.

2. will i be able to have data on a disc along with music, so like half the disc is music and half is data and when i plug it in to computer it still is recognized as mass storage device, and will i be able to boot off of it with a bootable linux distro such as knoppix.

3. is hi-md a good choice for live concert recording vs netmd or normal md and why?

I can only answer question 1 and 3,

The digital amp only pertains to listening. I belive it is a class D amp and by definition, should sound better. Although the AUVI amp that sharp makes is better, it is still an improvement.

3. Hi-MD is the coice for live recording. Digital Uploading is available for Hi-MD, whereas Net/MD doesn't have any uploading. Also, you can record using an Uncompressed format (PCM) whereas regular MD must be compressed using either SP or LP2/LP4.

Hope that helps.

Answer to you 2nd question.

Yes.

Not very. The main consideration is the much higher efficiency of the digital amps for power consumption. The EQ ability is also probably more relevant to those who confuse quality for tonal flavour, but I'm nowhere near convinced that the HD amp is better in overall sound quality terms to the amp fitted to the last of the Net MD's.

2. will i be able to have data on a disc along with music, so like half the disc is music and half is data and when i plug it in to computer it still is recognized as mass storage device, and will i be able to boot off of it with a bootable linux distro such as knoppix.

Yes. 300-400K/sec transfer speed for files without too much fragmentation. Optimal long file transfer speed is about 450K/sec.

3. is hi-md a good choice for live concert recording vs netmd or normal md and why?

Simple... less disc swapping. Until programs come out which do not mess with the PCM stream to make it into a WAV, the upload feature and quality increase in recording is largely a moot point for people who want to record and share on non-MD formats.

What about this amp compared to the Sharp Auvi digital amplifier? [which 9 times out of 10 has been favored to provide some form of improved sound] I haven't heard you digress much into that.

Give it up dude, and let me believe that I'm getting much better sound from my MZNH1.

The sound isn't BAD heh... at Hi-SP paired with mid-level buds/phones, the sound is satisfactory for the majority of us, especially for the purpose of listening on-the-go where you wouldn't always have the chance to carefully listen to the detail of the sound.

However, some people have much higher expectations and must pick out any noticeable flaws. They make good reviewers of themselves but sometimes you shouldn't take their opinion too heavily: reviews and contrasting comments are meant to clearly show the strongs and weaks, and it's up to you to decide in the end.

People want comparisons, they get comparisons. I'm sure you wouldn't be saying the same thing if the NH1 came out slightly ahead, yes? You'd be singing about it from the rooftops. :rasp:

As I've said before, I think the sound is perfectly OK, and few but those investing in high-end ear gear will raise any quibbles with Hi-SP sound quality. BUT, the PCM mode being specifically pegged as 'high fidelity' it does raise some issues. Usually, I have to prick up my ears as it were to pick up a difference, even between many portables. What I was really surprised about was the ease with which I could pick out the difference between the original and the NH1 rendition of it when recording the CD via optical in PCM, then playing back in Line Out mode. That's NOT good.

Nah, I go with whatever seems most logical and suits me best. I want to buy an iPod for the better convinience of managing music, but the voice recording won't do for my instrumental needs. Plus I'm on a limited budget so I'd have to make it my recorder AND player (unless someone here wants to donate me an iPod )... Anyway I do not strongly support either of the 2 often-compared portable audio units here.

(P.S.: Would I be singing about it from the rooftops if the NH1 beat the iPod? Well possibly... at least then I'd know I'm a happy camper with a truly quality recording + playback audio unit! ... yes I can only dream... :whatever:)

Doom 3's taking up all my time

That makes the 2 of us

ok so now i'm left to ask if u just want the recording capability or very good digital voice recordings cuz i'm sure u could settle for the dell dj ipod's biggest contender right? u can record with that unit

In short: I'm going iPod if it had a mic jack to record from. The iTalk Voice Recorder is not going to be good enough to record live instrumental music.

Ah, I see that you're from Internode... at least now I know what sorta staff they have there. Aren't you guys supposed to be champions at getting poor people like me off the RIMs? Looks like you're on WAIX too, that does mean you aren't too far from me, eh?

You give time frames for Telstra to get off their arses, not me. Go sit in a corner.

*doh* Proxy.

There was not any doubt in my mind,of how talented fella' you are.

Seriously, I also feel let down by Sony somehow. It is mostly due to stupid software restrictions. I used to own quite few MD gear in da past, and think that all in all, Hi-Md is not that bad format. Sound quality rolleyes.gif could be better for the price tag of MZNH1 but I am not an audiophile like you are(15 % deaf in both ears, from listening walkman and going to loud rave parties over the years),and majority of us aren't also. Let's face it. None of portable gear won't give you 100 % sound quality of high-end studio/home gear. I still feel that Hi-MD is a little step forward. Could have been bigger but eh. The other day I managed to cram 7 full albums of Hi-SP music on 1Gb disc, so soon there will be much less clutter on my desk. I also use it for file transfer between work and home, which I wasn't able to do before. It is slow, but it works. For me (non-audiophile) it has its advantages over previous MD models.

Cheers

PS. Would you please stop playing with my Karma

A good portable unit with a powerful headphone amp (i.e. iPod, Creative Nomad) and a pair of Etymotic Research ER-4Ps may not sound EXACTLY as good as a high-end home rig...

... but it would come pretty damn close!
