rhesusmonkey
I've been lurking anonymously on these boards for several months now, and I've checked out many of the 'feature comparison' charts among the announced HI-MD devices. But one thing keeps bugging me, what is it about the NH1 that causes it to list at up to $100 more than the NH900? I've seen a few differences here and there, but if there's something that substantial I've either missed it or unconsciously ignored it. I apologize if this has been addressed on the forums previously, but a search revealed nothing concentrating on this specific issue (unless of course I missed or ignored that too :wacky:). Thanks in advance. I'm a bit paranoid about making a significant investment without all the relevant information, but this board has been an unbelievably useful resource so far. KJ_Palmer
3.5 things 'better' about the NH1: 1. Slimmer/lighter than the NH900. 2. All metal (magnesium) body. NH900 is half plastic/half aluminium. 3. Better (3 line) remote. 3.5 Has fancy battery. Is that worth $100? - maybe
sirpilf
its stand has usb built in also. but other then that it just looks fancier. i dont think its worth $100 more. i ordered the 900.
Ppk3000
3.5 Has fancy battery."Fancy"? The NH900 and NH1 both use stick-type battery except NH1 features a larger (yet lighter) LiIon stick with greater capacity than NH900's NiMH stick. However, NH900 beats NH1 hands down in battery performance if you attach the AA pack.

Isnt the stand same as what you get on NH3D, in which case it hasnt got USB connection.
Ipaqman
One more feature that is critical for some users: track date-time stamping. None of the other Hi-MD recorders have that feature. I need it for my voice/lecture recordings. I bought the NH1 for only $350 (expect to receive it tomorrow), making the price difference more worthwhile. DrZhivago
I own MZNH1, so here are few facts. MZNH1 doesn't have USB connector on it's cradle. It has decent battery life. Capacity wouldn't be a match to combined AA+NHWM10 in MZNH900. Bear in mind that NHWM10 is a crappy battery on its own. I would rather get spare NHWM14 if you go with MZNH900. I haven't tried MZNH900 yet,but judging from the pictures, looks like chunky piece of hardware, to me. It's much heavier than MZNH1. Couple that with spare battery pack and it becomes really noticeable weight in your pocket(of course unless you carry it in your bag or pouch). MZNH1 on the other hand, fits into shirt pocket and you don't even notice it. I guess, for majority of people it will come down to better remote/better on-unit display. MZNH1 remote is far superior to MNZH900's one (once you get used to it). If you don't use(not used to) remote, MZNH1 may not be for you, because single line display on it, is very small, and it doesn't display song name/artist information. However it fits very nice into overall design of the unit. MZNH1 remote is also fun to use cuz it displays different animations, and I like when it displays that digital  peak meter when you record. Edit: For european folks. MZNH900 sold in europe has only 3mW headphone output.MZNH1 has 5mW regardless of the region.
crazeybt1
i guess the $100 difference in price of the NH1 and the NH900 is just a US thing  http://www.avland.co.uk/minidisc/portable.htm .. not so in the UK huh..

After much consideration, I whittled my list of differences-I-care-a-lot-about down to two: battery life and dimensions/weight. For battery life, the NH900's AA capabilities obviously trounce the NH1. But the NH1 is a bit smaller, a bit lighter, and has that sex appeal that makes you want to take it out to dinner and then have your way with it in a cheap motel room... ...ehhh, anyway, datavis.com's $309 price for the NH1 was the kicker. How can you pass that up? Mine should arrive shortly. Thanks for the help, all!
Ipaqman
I just received my NH1 today. I noticed that the NH1 remote backlight is noticeably dimmer than my R900 remote. Did anyone else have that same experience?
oluv
can anyone of the happy new owners tell me if the nh1 and the 900 or only one or the other are charged through usb as well? it is not the charging that is important for me, but more the ability to not discharge when connected to usb. thanks for an answer. Anyway, the unit is powered when connected to a USB port so the battery isn't drained - this is especially helpful during those long downloading sessions. However, the baterry itself cannot be charged via USB.

I plugged the Ipaq extender into the dock and charged the NH1. If Sony or some other vendor provides a simple NH1 usb connector with the DC input jack (just like Ipaq does), then the NH1 will have the portable power just like the NH900 has. In the meanwhile, I am considering getting a spare Li-ion battery from Audiocubes. However, I have not even gotten close to running out of power. A thirty minute charge is usually more than sufficient to power me through a day.
Cadevil5
I guess you could buy like 7 or 8 extra batteries for when you go on vacation... Or bring the bulky charger with you... Bottom line is the NH1 is probably a better made piece of hardware...the NH900 is a more convenient piece of hardware (at least for me) Why not combine the 2...Bring back the old days when the 900 models were tops. Ipaqman
One new NH1 feature: The remote optionally displays actual number of hours of battery life left. This seems to be an estimate based upon the current power consumption. It is a very useful feature for a recorder.

Qwakrz
Nope, it does not. That picture was an early BETA from Sony, a good 4 months before release. Sony changed the spec's of the unit just after these were shown to the public.
