dex Otaku
Can anyone confirm whether SP mode on Hi-MD recorders being used in NetMD mode - recording from an analogue source, I mean - is really SP mode, or is it upsampled LP2? jadeclaw
To my ears, it is LP2 with a compatibility layer. My JE500 sounds better (ATRAC4.5)
dex Otaku
Why did they bother even including the option of supposed SP recording, then? Sheesh. So much for backward-compatibility.
jadeclaw
The disc plays in an old MD-deck. So it is backward compatible. Oh, you wanted full SP-quality? Sorry pal, no place for nostalgia here.
Qwakrz
Recording in realtime from a source (I.E. not using USB) should give you true SP. All Hi-MD units are advertised as having Atrac Type S so should produce all the same features as their Net-MD / MD cousins (I.E. Atrac R recordings in SP, Atrac S playback) If not, Sony have lied & its not a small one like the transfer of recordings.
jadeclaw
Well, you made me repeat the test and I don't know, what went wrong the first time, maybe I mixed up some tracks leading me into thinking, that it is glorified LP2. However, I repeated it and the NH700 definitely creates true SP quality wise. I cannot tell, if the NH700 is better or equal to my JE500, my ears are at the limit here. The chain as usual: CDP-711 --> digital --> MD --> TA-F470 --> DT-770.
xispe
the so called fake SP sounds good when recorded using my NH700, can someone investigate this ? This is not as good as the good old SP, but is way better than LP2.
Syrius
It could be the improved DSP inside of the machine. I'll be getting a HiMD unit soon, and will compare the results against my friend's N505.
dex Otaku
If you record live on a HiMD in MD mode, you get true SP [of the newest generation encoding/decoding when on the unit itself]. True SP is not available from SonicStage or Simple Burner.
aeriyn
True SP is not available from SonicStage or Simple Burner.Well, of course not. SP is old-school and can't be DRMed. Since by adding DRM would alter the codec, making it incompatible with legacy MD equipment. Also, Hi-SP is supposed to be ATRAC 4.5R's replacement with the new machines. No, it's not as good (yet) but there's every indication that Hi-SP will eventually be better. I still say we need AAC for MD!
campekenobi
Um.. sorry for the noob question, but I just transferred my first wav file group from my HD to the hi-MD (nh900)... I notice when I play it back, it automatically reads LP. Is there a setting to change my output so it would be better quality? I have the 256kps selected... jadeclaw
If you selected that, when ripping or importing into SonicStage, you can use that for transferring too. To achieve that, you have to select 'Hi-MD' from the 'MD mode'-dropdown in the transfer window. On standalone playback, the recorder will show Hi-SP. Plus, you can check, what the files on the PC are in by right clicking on a track, then selecting 'Properties' from that menu. In the following Dialogue, select the 'Files' tab.
