    Christian Science Monitor goes Web-mostly

The only reason to publish an old-fashioned print newspaper in 2008 is because print advertising is more lucrative than Web advertising. Flip through the print edition of the Christian Science Monitor and you will see virtually no advertising. Therefore, the paper's announcement today that it will switch to a mostly Web model next April makes eminent good sense.

    [snip]

Those who insist on the printed word will be able to buy a weekly edition, which will allow the Monitor to engage in reverse-publishing — that is, in republishing content that appears online first. That's what they're doing in Madison, Wis., where the Capital Times earlier this week dropped its daily print edition and replaced it with two free tabloids filled with material from its Web site.

  2. Walking through Thamel, the tourist area of Kathmandu, and these suede pouches caught my eye. Perfect size for most portables, as the photos show. What they might not show too clearly is the padding. The outside is suede, inside a smooth vinyl. Not sure of the stuffing, but an adequate but not hefty layer. I paid $2.00, though I suppose I could have bargained him down to about half if I had been in the mood.

The downside is that when I took my Walkman out to check the fit, I seem to have lost one of my ear-bud covers. Hopefully, the guy found it and has kept it in his junk drawer where it will be waiting for me on my next visit to Thamel.

  3. Looking through my owner's manual last night I notice that Sony recommends attaching what they call Ferrite Core to the cables attached to your MD. These are little plastic shells through which you loop your cable once or twice. The manual, though, doesn't explain why this is recommended. And when I search Ferrite Core, I get returns about computer memory.

So what is this and why should I use them?

  4. I thought Google ads were targeted. Mostly they appear to be, with postings for Minidisc, stereo, or recording equipment, a few computer related ads, and some general stuff like apartment listings. But I'm puzzled by the Scientology YouTube Channel. Why does this pop up so frequently?

  5. Yes, this is what I'm used to in Japan. It's good to be here and, as you say, go back to nature, which amounts to the internet as we knew it about 10-15 years ago. Great for text and still photos, impossible for audio and video.

  6. Hey, Guitarfxr.

Broadband, as its defined in Nepal, is 128kps. High speed internet is still a dream, as are much simpler realities, like potable water.

For myself, though, I do have Hi-MD. So long as the fidelity is acceptable, a Hi-MD of Smooth Jazz radio sounds great. Maybe you could split it between Smooth Jazz and a New Age broadcast, if you can find one.

  7. This is a compilation of music that is most commonly described as New Age, Adult Contemporary, or Contemporary Instrumental. The compositions feature strong melodies played mostly on piano or guitar with full band or orchestral backing, a few with ethnic flourishes. This is not dance music, but many of the songs might make you want move your body or roll down the car window. I took the title of the disc from my radio show, which I did for nine years in Fukuoka, Japan. This collection features some of the show's signature tunes, the ones we went back to again and again.

PM me if you'd like to trade. I'm interested in music of a similar nature, as well as jazz, ambient, world/ethnic, and rock.

Hope to be hearing from you soon.

  8. One thing I didn't bring much of to Nepal is straight-ahead acoustic jazz. And after hearing some this past week I realized how much I'd like to here more. So here's a challenge for traders who like to compile, an original jazz collection featuring

    • all acoustic instruments
    • a piano/bass/drum rhythm section + at least one other instrument, preferably horns
    • no vocals
    • mid-tempo compositions
    • all music from one decade

The compiler should strive for consistency in mood and fidelity.

Anyone willing to take the challenge, I will be happy to trade you for any of the compilations I am posting, for music from Nepal, for non-music items from Nepal, or for blanks. PM me to work out the details.

Hope to be hearing from you soon.

  9. Indeed, scams are all too common on the internet. That's why I asked for a long-timer poster, someone you all know and in whom you can have more trust than a newbie.

Trust, or lack of it in Nepal post, is why I wouldn't have this shipped any other way than an international courier service. But as that is too expensive, I may have found the next best thing, a Nepali who is traveling to Japan next week. I can order from Amazon Japan and have it shipped direct to his address and all he has to do is put it in his suitcase, then give me a call when he gets home. He hasn't yet given me an answer. I'll let you know how things work out once I hear back from him.

Thanks again for all your concern and interest.

  10. Thanks for the help, gentlemen, and for the private message, sfbp. For those that might be interested, Minidisc Canada has the same item for about US$50.00 cheaper. But ordering from them is no different than any online seller. They'll ship only to the billing address when shipping overseas.

Thanks to sfbp I checked out the FedEx rates and found they are far more expensive than I imagined, approximately US$200 to ship a three pound box to Kathmandu.

I don't trust the PO not to steal this, courier is too expensive, and Amazon Japan won't ship the item to Nepal.

I think I'll just have to wait until I get back to Japan in the spring.

    :thank_you2:

  11. I did indeed say a lot, didn't I? Sorry to run on so.

A return visit to Shikoku would be welcome. I spent five weeks on the pilgrimage there and found it far more lovely than I had ever imagined.

  12. Lately I've been spending too much time farting around with my MD. The result is a series of compilation MDs that I thought might be worth sharing.

The first one I have here is a collection of 16 tracks spanning 12 years and 4 albums of 3 incarnations of post-80's Journey. Included are tracks from Trial By Fire, Arrival, Generations, and Revelation, featuring the band's three singers, Steve Perry, Steve Augeri, and Arnel Pineda.

Any compilation compilers who might be interested in a copy, PM me here and let's see if we can't work something out. I'm interested in rock, jazz, new age, ambient, world/ethnic.

    Be good to yourself.

  13. Any long-time member here who might be willing to make the purchase from Ebay and reship to me in Kathmandu, PM me here. I can pay you via Paypal (but not the seller, who will ship only to my registered Japan address) and would make payment to you before you made the purchase. I would then ask you to ship to me via FedEx.

When I get back to Japan next spring, maybe I can return the favor with something you need from there. If you're into Himalayan arts, just tell me what you need. Chances are I can find it here.
