Hi there! I just came back to this forum but today it's all about a cassette walkman. So recently i picked up a "like new, serviced well" EX-615 which was in good cosmetic shape but technical, it had some issues the seller wasn't telling me... I was able to fix most issues but there's still a slightly noticeable wow and flutter and i wonder what would be normal for such a machine? It surely isn't the best one ever made but with a DC servo, I'd expect it to be pretty good. I lubricated the capstan, replaced the belt and the pinch rollers with parts from "fixyouraudio" . I made myself a test tape on my Denon DRM-800 using a TDK SA cassette and used a utility on my pc to measure it. While it was much worse at the beginning, it sits now between 0.39% Rms and 0.50% Rms with peaks up to 0.60% Another unit i just picked up aswell has approx 0.20% to 0.30% Rms. Ofc. we'll also have to encounter the wow and flutter caused by the recording itself but i think this is a dramatic difference for two identical devices. One that has been "serviced" and one that hasn't been touched before (that works better). I found a spec sheet somewhere online (no official sony page) that said "less than 0,45% Rms " So while the second unit seems to be well within it's (official?) specs, the second one seems to be a little off. So i wonder if this is as expected and "as good as it gets" or if something else might be wrong with it? Both units got brand new rubber parts and lubrication where it is needed and accessible without removing the pcb. Btw. the wow and flutter of my denon deck is just about 0.06% RMS on average, with peaks up to 0,1% RMS from now and then, playing the test recording i made with the very same machine! What are your thoughts on this? I'll definitely never buy from this seller again 😄

I ordered 5 pieces, the price is 12€/piece and 10€ for shipping to germany. It's not cheap but your recorder will be up and running again! Just tried this on my own, however attaching the replacement gear to the spindle isn't so easy. It has to be heaten up, then quickly and carefully attached to the corresponding place, otherwise it will break. Trust me, i tried hard and broke one gear 😉 So i fixed one recorder from ebay, 3 gears left for future repairs. No long-term experiences by now and a little rattling noise but spinning freely and playing fine so far.

Hi all. Didn´t expect much here but it pretty much seems like there are still some people interesting into this particular series of sharp md recorder. Fortunately my unit still works fine but i also had two identical ones in my hands that didn´t due to the broken gear which in fact is a extremely common issue of those. Will keep an eye in here, maybe someone with the will and skill can make such gears ;)

Well the original atrac actually seems to do a good job here aswell, the sharp recorder has an amazing sound anyways with a nice DAC and powerful headphone amplifier, The sony isn´t even close to this so yeah if the 80min recording limit wouldn´t be, a amazing portable device. I also thought it would be much better, even since youtube music nowadays uses 192 kbit/s for their streams (i guess aac or something) and sounds just fine. But i don´t know, maybe other Hi-MD machines did a much better encoding job than mine since it shouldn´t have noticeable artefacts whatsoever. I´ve uploaded an example (vlc player can play this file). Can´t upload the file from my sharp though, you know sony won´t allow... The artefacts are noticeable through my headphones, not so much from my hifi speakers. At least at the beginning, but sometimes also noticeable while audio is playing. Just had an interesting idea... Recording with both devices at the same time. And still, the Sharp made the better recording with old atrac in SP mode. Hi there! i just played around with my minidisc portables and started to record my vinyl collection to a single 80min standard MD in Hi-SP mode. The recorder is a sony mz-rh910 and sounds excellent when recording in PCM mode (lossless). Actually used this mode to rip some vinyl records to my Pc. Unfortunately the 80min disk can only hold up to 28min of lossless audio so i decided to use the standard Hi-SP mode to create a mixtape. But then i noticed, there´s a lot of artefacts from compression going on, noticeable at the beginning of the recording while there´s just noisy vinyl. Comparing this to a recording done with my non Hi or net md capable Sharp MD SR50, there´s no such artefacts noise noticeable. It just sounds like the source. So i wonder, is the atrac at 292 kbit/s actually better than atrac3plus at 256 kbit/s ? Seems a bit odd since atrac3plus should do a lot better. It´s also sometimes noticeable when actual audio is present. I made a mixtape by using wav audio from pc and transfered it to a minidisc by using compressed atrac and there wasn´t anything like this noticeable. I just checked it in sonic stage and it actually used a bitrate of 352 kbit/s so even higher than the best mp3. Is there actually a way to use a higher bitrate when recording directly from the line input of the recorder? It´s just not satisfying and for PCM recording, well i only have one 1GB disk and a lot of standard MDs but don´t want to have one disk for 3 tracks and change the disk all the time.

Hi there, I own a Sharp MD SR50 which to be seems to be a very great profressional looking device. Sadly a common fault for this unit is a broken gear that drives the laser head. My unit is still working but somewhere i have one layong around that doesn't. So just in any case i'd like to be prepared if the working unit fails. Unfortunately it seems impossible to get the gear with the part no. NGERH0597AFZZ. Im curious if anyone may have this laying around or know a supplier for this part. The good thing about the RH910 it can play mp3's native without conversion. Mp3 to atrac can be done in sonicstage but then sounds horrible so i directly record it and then just edit the title names via net md. So i wanted a hi-md that supports mp3 without conversion

Yeah i know techmoan and have seen some of his minidisc videos but can't remember one with printing labels. I also don't want to cover the full minidisc. There's a area on the left side designed to attach a label and that's the place i meant

Hi there, i haven´t found a good solution for printing labels for my minidisc´s. I´d love to print out some album arts that i can glue onto my minidisc but i don´t know the resolution i should use in order to get the correct size on a din a4 page. The minidisc´s placeholder for a label is rectangular and the usual pictures from album arts are a square so my idea was to create a rectangular label with the picture and below this maybe the album name in letters with a matching backround color to the minidisc itself or the album art. I´ve uploaded an example label. So i just need the right pixel X pixel to fit on the minidisc properly if i print it on din a4.

Well then i may stick with the old way since conversion in sonic stage sucks and the 2nd generation isn´t currently avaiable to buy on ebay and the rh1 is just way too expensive. I found the NH700 for just about 75€ maybe i´ll pick it up for my collection then.

Hey there, I haven´t found any info about this in the FAQ or google but i´d like to know if any Hi-MD machine can decode mp3 files since some units have "mp3" printed on the back and others do not. If so, which models will play mp3 without conversion? I´m planning to expand my little collection and get a hi-md machine from ebay. Currently there are two options: A Sony MZ NH-700 and a NH600. Can they play mp3? I have a lot 320kbit/s mp3´s EDIT: I also found a MZ-NH900 unit for a reasonable price avaiable but it doesn´t come with any additional accessory. Are any features avaiable on the device itself (like sound modes)? I don´t care much about having the remote itself if any features are avaiable without it Thanks
