I heard that theory regarding computer batteries, and in fact, when my b/f's computer battery was only giving him less than an hour of life - we tried it! We wrapped it up and stuck it in the freezer overnight - and then allowed it to 'defrost' for 24 hours. When we put it back in the computer - he got exactly the same amount of battery life as he had before the freezing!! So it didn't work - but it was worth a try just in case!

I didn't think to try that method this time to be honest. I have tried it before (not in exactly the same circumstances) and I got a message that the device couldn't be disconnected - I assume because it was still in use?? But I'll definitely try it next time, I know there's going to be a next time But I'm encouraged by the fact it's happened to you before and you've managed to fix it by disconnecting and starting it again. The reason I got so worried was seeing those dreaded words: "No tracks available for playback". . . nobody wants to see that!! Ascariss If the NWZ-A818 gets a firmware upgrade which allows it to play gapless, I would definitely get it. I wouldn't get rid of my 808 though, I'd just have 2 - and the 818 is currently cheaper than the older 808. I think it's been cheaper since it was first released.

I just almost suffered a 'breakdown' after I renamed an album on the 808 from within SS (in the device menu). I've done this before with no problem at all. But this time, when it got to "Writing 100%", SS froze. So I waited about 5 minutes, but still the hourglass didn't budge. I knew from past experience NOT to disconnect the player while SS was frozen, so I tried to shut down SS via the X symbol - but it didn't work. So I did ctrl/alt/delete and saw SS wasn't 'responding' so I ended the process from there as there was nothing else I could do. When I unplugged the player, I got the dreaded message: "No songs available for playback. Please connect your device". So I re-connected it and it then went through the process of updating the database. . . and after 5 nail-biting minutes, all my 700 songs re-appeared!! My concern is this: Is there any other way to shut down SS (while the player is still connected) - if it's 'not responding' what can I do? And has anyone else had this happen to them before? I remember getting the 'No database' message on my 706 twice and losing everything on it, but that's because I unplugged the player when SS froze instead of closing SS down first. But I couldn't shut SS down in the normal way this time and I've never had the 'No songs available for playback' message before. Should I be concerned? Could this be a sign of bad things coming????

I thought so. . . I remember someone at Head-Fi advising someone not to buy the 808/818 because it was 'known' to be volume capped!!! I made sure to correct that point. Don't want people not buying it because of incorrect information.
-
My one didn't. I don't think any of the 7xx series were volume capped at all. I got mine from Amazon.co.uk and there was definitely no limit on it. I think the 7xx upwards don't have volume limiting anymore.

I am still waiting. It was dispatched on the 13th with an estimated delivery date of the 15th - so it is now late!! Don't worry, as soon as I receive it and play with it for a while, I will report back.

rainman - have you tried transferring in smaller batches? From what I understand, you're trying to transfer over 500 files at a time. I can't be sure, but I think I read somewhere on the forum that larger amounts don't transfer, or SS just hangs. Just a thought, but maybe try transferring smaller batches across and see if that helps.

I wasn't aware Sony made a duo-coloured 706??? Definitely suspicious about it now. I thought it was a trick photo when I saw the different colours. Definitely get a replacement and check it out first. The 'real' 706 (same colour back and front) is not muffled and sounds great. It's as if the casing broke and they just stuck a different 'back' on - did you pay full price for it? Was it listed as refurbished or something?
-
Good point. Also, I initially found it confusing to know if N/C was on or off. If it's on - the icon appears on the play menu screen along with the other info, song title, artist etc. If the icon's not there, it's not activated.
-
arvacon - at the very least, ask Sony to confirm whether there should be a "Made In xxx" somewhere on the back of the unit. If they say YES - take it straight back to the store and insist on either a refund, or, if you want to get a replacement, ask to open the packaging and check the back of the unit first. If it's fake or a demo, it could explain why you're having an issue that no one else (so far), has commented on.
-
arvacon - I think my 706 said 'made in China' on the back. Also, you may just have a faulty unit rather than a fake one. If anyone else experienced a 'muffled' sound with the 706, I'm sure it would have been mentioned on here already since it was released at least ten months ago. I don't recall anyone ever saying it sounded muffled (I could be wrong as I haven't read every single thread about the the 706) but I think if this issue was common to the 706, someone would have pointed it out by now. Maybe it's just faulty?

I sold a CKH-NWA800 clear hard case to Mark: communication was excellent and payment was prompt. A very friendly guy who I'd happily do business with again. All in all, a great first 'ATRAClife' transaction. Thanks Mark!

It didn't come today. I ordered it via free super saver delivery so although it was dispatched yesterday - I think it takes an extra day to be delivered. Where/who did you buy the 706 from?

Sony NW-A8XX Series carrying cases
juli_ replied to Old skool D's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
I haven't got the cradle/dock that you have - but I do have the CPF-NW001 which I imagine has the same fitting for attaching the player. I have to take my case off for it to fit. -
I'm very surprised you found the 706 muffled. I thought the SQ was very very good, so I'm probably not the best person to help you out here. But I ordered the NWD-B100 for my sister-in-law in Canada (her first ever dap!) and it should be with me tomorrow. As she wants me to get it ready for her, charging it etc, and loading some albums I have - I'll get the opportunity to test it for myself, so I can give you my opinion on it if you like. However, like I said - I don't think it will be particularly useful as we clearly have very different views on the SQ of the 706. I found it to be very clear and you found it muffled. . . do you think you might have a faulty one? I haven't known anyone to say it sounded muffled. Anyway, I'll get to play with the B100 soon enough.

Yes! I'm much less sadder than you with just the clear case and the CPF-NW001! Mind-blowingly good sound from something so tiny. Markey I checked pm and replied.

This is too funny - NWZ owners want features from the NWA series - and NWA owners want features from the NWZ series!! Now if only Sony would make an NWZANWAZZZZZ-AAA818808 series, we could all be happy

I have a brand new unopened clear case for sale at £10 (not including postage). My friend bought it last week for £17.99 from Argos for her NWZ-S616, but it's the wrong case and she doesn't have the receipt to take it back. I already have one so it's no good to me either! All the functions can be easily accessed through the case. Please PM me for any details. Thanks.

Ha ha ha ha - NO!!! Like everyone else, I was up in arms when I thought new buyers would get the sweeter deal with Atrac/SS dead and buried - until I realised I'd miss all the features I have on the 808, ratings, on-the-fly playlists, gapless, gapless and gapless. . . So definitely not - I'm very attached to all the 808 features and I couldn't stand to sacrifice gapless
-
I know, how ignorant to rate it low because "8GB isn't big enough"?? I was so peeved I left a comment at Amazon.com :D I can understand if someone slates a product because it doesn't do what it should - but to criticise an 8GB player for being. . . 8GB?? My Sony TV is only 32" - should I complain because it isn't 40"?
-
I can't confirm it since I don't have that model, but I've read it doesn't support on-the-fly playlists like the A808.

Has anyone managed to transfer an iTunes video to the 808?
juli_ replied to Old skool D's question in Audio
Tunebite: I remember downloading this a while ago when I wanted to download some clips from youtube. But during the setup instructions I had to agree to certain changes being made to the soundcard properties (or something similar?) - and after I'd installed it, it seemed to take charge of, and associate itself with all my audio files. And there seemed to be no option to allow the previous configuration to be set. And I didn't manage to download any of the youtube clips either. . . Old_Skool, I'll wait for you to report back after you've used it -

You're welcome, shame though that both our brains combined to make less than half a brain in this instance I'm guessing they're protected because there's no other reason why they shouldn't transfer is there? And I would like to know about this too, as there are a couple of videos I wanted to purchase as well. . . help us please!! -
I chose a Sony TV because I'd had a good experience with the last one, plus I paid £579 which I thought was quite reasonable. I think they were priced at around £1200 at the beginning of the year. I definitely would not have paid that! So I think I got a good deal. As for brand loyalty, none of my stereo equipment is Sony funnily enough, it's a mix of Nad, Yamaha and Panasonic! I have to admit I tend to go for the same brand if it served me well before, there's a 'security' factor about it I suppose. The one thing I wouldn't buy is a Sony Vaio - my b/f had one (the chunky desktop replacement one) - it was really really noisy (a 'Google' search turned up several issues with it), although it wasn't a fault as such, it was too noisy to keep and very unreliable. I know it may have been a one-off problem, but it put me off, despite being a 'Sony' brand.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but when I try and clear an individual song from my bookmarks - I only get the option to clear the entire list. But I don't want to clear the whole list - just the occasional track. I'm not talking about deleting tracks, just removing from the playlist. I tried to do it another way as well, via SS - but the only options there are to 'play' or 'transfer back to the library'. Well, the transfer doesn't work anyway, so if I make a playlist/bookmark with 50 songs for example, and then decide I don't want one - I have to clear the WHOLE list? Is this right, or am I overlooking something obvious? Thank you
