Sony NW-E407L Review and Taking apart device.
katakonik posted a topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
I purchased my Sony NW-E407L (Ocean Blue) on December 29 for $160 Canadian. When I first turned on the player, it looked amazing. The screen was absolutely beautiful. I experienced the same "wow" when I first turned on and used my PSP. Transferring music took quite a while, but the MP3 File Manager program made it very easy. I, at first, attempted to use SonicStage 3.3 to convert my music to ATRAC3 105kbps and transfer them onto my player. The software is a bit complicated to use for people who are non-computer savvy. Positives - Nice OLED display. - Very easy to use. - Long battery life. - Looks nice. - Something to show off to your friends. - Nice and small (beats my old MP3 CD player in terms of transport and usage). - Strongly built. I dropped the device while in the car and not one scratch (luckily). The thing doesn't feel cheaply made. - 1GB of storage. - Good sound quality. Negatives - Crappy/flimsy USB cover. - Easy to get dirty. Screen prone to scratches. - Not a big deal, but all the pics I saw of the 407L showed a REALLY sky/caribbean ocean colour (only reason why I chose this colour instead of silver), but rather, the colour was more of a dark/navy blue or a dark shade of violet. - For the two buttons, Search/Menu, Display or Disp/FM for the 50x users, I find that I have to use some force when pressing either button. I noticed that they were too "in" to the glass/plastic covering. I had to use my fingernails to push them or more force if I were using my fingertip. I don't want to put too much force on my device especially on the front of the screen, the most important part. - The headphones I got were decent, but when using the headphone extension, only sound came out of the right earbud (maybe I got a defective extension headphone cable???). - Quality control is not that good. There were dried water droplet spots inside the casing. I had to remove my case and wipe them off. I'll detail later the removal process. - Crappy pouch/case. - Lack of accessories especially cases - I would like to protect my investment and hope to use it for a long time. Pictures of the device: Next, I will be talking about how I removed the annoying dried up water spots on my device. When shone under light, you can easily see the dried up water spots. There were a lot. It was like someone coughed and left some remnants of their spray of saliva that dried up on the cover while installing it onto the device. I used a screwdriver to remove the two screws and it was pretty simple. I then took off the cover, which required some minor force, but not much. You have to slide the cover off and then lift. I used a microfibre cloth that came with my PSP, dabbed a bit of water onto it, wiped the cover, and dried it off. I then slid it back on and put the two screws back. It was very easy to do. Here are some pictures of the removal process: The stuff I used. Microfibre cloth, two screwdrivers, small box to cover the device from dust while it's open. Plastic casing that had the dried up water droplets. NW-E407L w/o the clear/plastic covering. -
Ignore my previous post. I took the plunge and took apart my two day old 407. The dried up water droplets were pissing me off. I'll be posting a thread reviewing the device and my process of taking it apart. I'll post a link in this message after I finish writing it up. check the bottom of: http://www.atraclife.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=792

Quick question when you took yours apart. When you unscrewed the two screws, did the cover come off easily? Or you had to yank at it? Just to make sure, once you take out the two screws, only the cover comes off, correct? No internal components come off as well? Lastly, was it hard to get the cover back on?

Nice pictures, thanks. -
Nice case. They need to make one for the E40x/E50x/A300etc. series as well

imagine, did you take apart your 407 yet? Was it easy to remove? I noticed that mine has 7-8 small dried up water droplets, which I have no idea how they got in there, since I just got my 407 2 days ago. I'm definitely sure that it's just under the glass and can be wiped off easily.

Alright, thanks for the information. I'll probably make a new thread later on once I get to play around with it longer.

Aww, that sucks. Thanks for the information.

I just got this player yesterday (Ocean Blue) and it's really nice. I apologize if the following questions have already been answered on this board. 1. I already made a thread regarding about where to purchase a case, but what I really want is something that will protect the screen from scratches. Does a screen protector that's designed for the player (has the cutout holes for the two buttons near the play button) even exist? 2. The box says USB2.0 and I have read that the device is really USB1.1 only. Can this be fixed through firmware? I installed v2.0 firmware on my player already and it's still transferring at only USB1.1 speeds. Or is this USB2.0 just a typo on Sony's part? 3. For those who own this device, do you find it hard to press the two buttons, Search/Menu, Display or Disp/FM for the 50x users? I find that I have to use some force when pressing either button. I noticed that they were too "in" to the glass/plastic covering. I have to use my fingernails to press the buttons. Not that this is a huge problem or anything, but I just want to know if you guys have this problem as well or is it just my player. 4. Can you drag ATRAC files onto the MP3 File Manager program? 5. Is it possible to not charge the device when in USB mode? I, from time to time, hook the device to my PC to add/delete a song, but I don't want to have it constantly charging from such a small usage time. I heard that Li-ION batteries need to be treated in a certain manner due to their technology. Anyway, that's all for now. Thanks in advance for the help.

Thanks for the welcome Unfortunately, I do not know anyone from Japan. Do you know by any chance if Sony will eventually bring this case over to North America? I know that they have the following case for sale, but I do not really like the look of it.

Does anyone here know where I can buy the following item (ships to Canada would be great, thanks)?
