  1. I don't want to sound lika a forum Gestapo here but if you just tock the time to search past topics you find that question with replyes just around the corner. Here is one: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=1933
  2. I have exactly the same problem with my MZ-N707. Only differens is that I use mic in and the darn machine stops recording, sometimes after a minute and other times after 15 minutes. Brand new batteries makes no differens. Natuarly when I try this at home it records like it was no tomorrow. I have lost many good recordings so I simply got a Sharp and use that one for live recordings, with better quality also. Sony Sux - Sharp Rox
  3. Something like this maybe Costs around $15 USD i Sweden. I have a Aiwa CM-S20 that I'm happy with, not longer in production. I got that one for $20 USD. So I guess that this is in same quality region.
  4. Question 1, 2 & 3: No, quality will still be high. Use high-end cables. The better sound card will probobly result in better sound but I doubt that a fellow mortal man will ever hear the differens. Any sound recorder software will do the trick, you most likly have one on your PC (Start MenuProgramsAccessoriesEntertainmentSound Recorder), adjust rec level in volume control center (line in) and set to CD quality (16 bit / 44.100mhz Stereo). Start recording. You must name the .wav files one by one as you record, can also record a bigg one then cut it down to seperat tracks. For that you need a sound editor, I use GoldWave and are very happy with it. Note that waves in that quality are 10mb per minute, try not to make files that are larger than your ram memory. With a sound editor you can enhance the quality alot, maximize sound level, EQ adjust and so on. Question 4: Yes, track marks from md will be lost. When you have transferd the tracks you want and edit them you'll end up with a bunch of large wave files. I would recomend you to convert them into mp3 files (192kbit) for easyer handle and storing. Build your folders/library like you want em, make audio CD's. For realy precious tracks I save the MD master discs. About the optical cable, what you gain is two D/A A/D conversions. Again I don't think it would make any audio differens, atleast not so much that it's worth the extra equipment needed. There are ways to record direct to mp3 files from MD but if you want to edit them you still must convert to wave. mp3 encoder http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/ wave editor http://www.goldwave.com/
  5. I just tock the specs from www.minidisc.org and from my manual of N707 and MT99 (I live in Sweden and purchase the N707 localy so I must have the European version for sure). Didn't do any actual test myself. About the N707 ther are a feature called AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) that are on by default. Maybe this is what limit the volume to 2mW and when off pushing it to a hefty ear blowing 5mW?
  6. I just read this futher down the forum, maybe it's somewhat similar to this problem.
  7. Well how about that, to top it of they say it's normal. I say "if it walks like a duck...." obviously there something wrong here. Must be, can't be normal. If they realy mean that it is normal, I would take that as a reason for returning it and demanding my money back. Unfortunately (or rather fortunately) I don't own a MZ-N1 myself so I can't test it.
  8. I did some research in this matter and found out that Sharp have better amps generaly. If that what you mean, I haven't found that same model have different specs between regions. Sharp: DR7 8mW, MT99 10mW, MT877 5mW Sony: NF810 5mW, N707 5mW, R700 5mW Seems like all MDLP Sony's have only 5mW, Sharp's MDLP have gone from 5mW to 10mW then down to 8mW in there newest DR7 model. Again Sharp came out ahead of Sony. If it wasn't for Sony better NetMD feture I can't find any reason for why anyone should buy a Sony when they can get a Sharp.
  9. Maybe this will help, it's about a MD-MT99 but i may work in the same way.
  10. I didn't mean to be cocky but this "Great for newbies" comment was more of an slap in the face. Then you makin a newbie misstake yourself, it was an open invitation that couldn't pass without a an egg. Ever so humble.
  11. True, for recording purpose it will make no differens compared with an older Sharp. However you may want to transfer the music onto your PC and then the 1bit system will make it sound even better. I think you made a great deal deciding on that model.
  12. I have the previous model MD-MT99 and are very pleased with it. Good features is MDLP, mic in, slim sticker-gum battery + attachable AA cell battery case (MT99 only have a fixed AA battery case that makes unit larger). Negative side is no LCD remote, no NetMD. As the successor MD-MT290 costs around $230 USD I wouldn't pay more than half that price, $100-120 USD are max. If it cost's more I wouldn't buy it, I rather go for a brand new one. Read more about the model here: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sharp_MD-MT17...T190+MT200.html
  13. Yes it's tru that Sony ECM-DS70P can pick up engine sound from MD but that's more a problem if your recording sessions with many silent parts like classic music or nature sound (birds n bees). However the ECM-DS70P comes in two versions, one with cord and one without (T shaped). Sadly the one without are more common. You can get an extension cord cheap so you can put the mic away from unit. If you can plug ECM-MS907 mic into line in, it got a built in phantom function. Then it don't need another one, question is if it's strong enough? If not you are back to square one. Your guitar preamp sound like a good solution but it's most likly only in mono. Stereo makes a bigg differense even when the left/right mics are put close together like the ECM-DS70P.
  14. Hey MD4DNV. Read the question befor giving a bad answer. He got a battery box, and your doubble posting here makes it more funny. Don't press Submit twice dude, your hint fell flat.
  15. Yes I know, as I wrote "I would recommend Sony MZ-N710 (same as Sony MZ-NF810 but without radio recever)" I just wanted to point out that another model with very similar name Sony MZ-NE810 have no mic, to be sure to get the right one if he order it by mail. That's all.
  16. My advice is to buy a second hand Sharp, any unit with mic in and MDLP like MT-190, MT-200, MT-88, MT-99, MT-888, MT-899 will do the work. As noted Sharp have on the fly record level adjust and also more important a mic sensitive setting, high and low. If you record in loud areas with a Sony (not using a phantom feeder/battery box) you will suffer from distortions, with a Sharp set it mic low and that is not a seriouse issiue. Even if you want to record in standard play a MDLP model are more usefull later on in your life with it. I record in LP2 when a mic is used, SP when from a source like a soundboard. Check your second hand sites, price around $90 for a MT-99 and up to $160 for a MT-888. Don't pay much more than that, buy a new one instead. But do get a Sharp, not any Sony. As a microphone you may spend just as much as on a MD. Sony ECM-DS70P are a nice one, costs around $70. That model are avalible in two variants, one with a cord and one as direct plug in. I would go for the cord one, easier to keep stelthy and avoid getting engine sound on your recordings. Note that Sharp model names are different in Europe to US. Check out http://www.minidisc.org/part_Recorders_Sharp.html to see what's it called in your country.
  17. I think that Sony ECM-DS70P are a good choise but costs a little more than your budget. I have a small Aiwa CM-S20 mic that I payed $20 US for and at that price it's well worth it. As you have a Sony and want to record in loud enviroments a phantom feeder/battery box are a must, those are not cheap to buy. Otherwise you will get a nasty brickwall effect, distortion and bass doffs. Even when setting rec level very low.
  18. These two retailers have DR7 in stock and both are located in the US. http://www.minidisco.com/ http://www.soundprofessionals.com/ Current price is $290 US.
  19. Sony MZ-N710 are the current variant and with a new design of N707. Live recording sux with Sony models unless you have phantom feeding and plug into line in. Get a Sharp instead.
  20. NetMD or not NetMD that's the first question you must decide on. If you can live without that feature then there can be only one unit for you, Sharp DR7 (same as MD-DR470 over here in Sweden). With it you have Sharps superior mic recording quality (most Sony models sux in that area), backlite remote. In short everyting you need of a minidisc. If NetMD are more important than live recording I would recommend Sony MZ-N710 (same as Sony MZ-NF810 but without radio recever), Sharp have to date only one NetMD model IM-MT880/MT899. What I heard it's not as good as Sony in that field. Note that new Sony MZ-NE810 have no line in or mic in! Can only record via NetMD function. So if any of your wish list features are important then that one are not for you. Also note that no model can transfer music back to PC digitaly. Only way is the old fasion way of analog recording. Unless you get a deck player with optical out and you have optical in on your PC. Then you can record digitaly (in real time) from MD to PC.
  21. No! Don't get that one. A MD without remote are a pain to operate. Also that one don't come with any optical cable and of course no mic in either. Only unit, batter, eliminator and cheap headphones. Go for a model with better headphones and remote right away. Why do you think that so many MT-180 are sold second hand? The owners are not happy with 'em and want to get a better one. OK it's not totaly worthless as it have MDLP mode so if you can pick one up for less than $80 US, say max $60. Then do but your been warned. A MD without Long Play are more out dated than a pre GSM (NMT) cell phone, can only serve as a curious artifact on your book shelf.
  22. Have you tryed to plug it into line in? when you have phantom power skip the weak mic in on Sonys units. This would let you get much better sound quality.
  23. I'm also looking for a cheap way to build a phantom feeding / pre-amp box but your problem may be of another nature. Your MD got two mic level settings, maybe you have it on low and therefor must boost input level to get any good sound? Change it to high and test record again, if that don't work try another mic or the mic in another MD unit. Sharp are renown for there superior mic recording usage. Anyone out here that can help us build a pre-amp box? Guides and part lists would be very appriciated or a link to a site that have those. They are a little to expensive to purchase retail. Atleast for one living outside US, as most manufacturs are located there.

    NetMD modes SP modes

Instead of making a new topic I recycle this one. 1, Does it work to PC2MD a SP disc via OpenMG and then play it in a non MDLP unit? I'm thinking of getting a old MD to use were I don't want to risk my N707 but still be able to play disc's made by it. 2, Is there any way to PC2MD in SP without OpenMG crippleware? I know that Simple Burner only transfer in LP2/LP4 mode. Do Real's program support this? If so does it also have this check in/out limit? 3, Are a SP disc made by OpenMG still closed to edit/delete in a old non MDLP unit?
