  1. Heh. I bought one the day they came out, along with Mario 64. I haven't opened it or played it yet, though I did play the metroid demo for a moment at the store. Multiplayer is what sells me on this. I love classics like Mario Kart and Bomberman, which I'll be waiting till 2005 to play anyways, but I thought this would be a fun Christmas present-- none of this portable audio crap madness, hehe. Funny thing about the DS is that it came out in the states before Japan in this instance-- not by much, but it did, if I remember correctly.
  2. Ironic that it's the title of a BoA song (kiseki)-- sounds a lot like a Korean cuss word...
  3. If he's referring to doing a blind test on different codecs or comparing them all on one portable device (as a control), it makes sense-- since you can't playback every format on any one portable device. You could actually do it with any portable device that supports wav playback, there's just an extra step to package the PCM to put it on Hi-MD.
  4. Well I've never thought of an MD player as an "mp3 player"-- probably because my use of MD predates the proliferation of mp3 players. I can't believe I've been using MD for 5 years now. I've always thought of it as just that-- a portable recorder and player. I didn't even have access to a computer when I bought my first MD unit-- that was part of the beauty, it stood completely on it's own without the need for a computer. Of course MD has evolved and with higher capacity / longer discs it necessitates download via PC to an extent, but whatever. It's still MD to me I used an iPod Mini over the summer and it's a great piece of hardware. I'm no longer in love with it though and Sony still has some things right that Apple has yet to get, and that's EQ and gapless playback. Some people are fine without these but when you listen to film scores as I do, gapless becomes a big part of the overall listening experience. I listened to the Gladiator soundtrack on my NH1 yesterday and it was seamless. In short, I've used a couple different HDD based players but in the end I seem to come back to MD. The NH1 is getting more use lately than the iPod. If apple can get their act together with better DSP / EQ and gapless I'll consider a larger player like a 40gig iPod. Until then, I'll be enjoying gapless and dreaming of a Sharp Auvi Hi-MD player. To each his own.
  5. Dex, forgive me for not following the issue of SS trashing uploads, but with previous versions of SS how many uploads would you do before SS trashed one? I mean, you say 150 so far, but what is that in comparison to, to give me an idea of how much improvement you're finding?
  6. MD freak-- recording on Hi-MD with synch rec works like a charm. I was talking about my iRiver iHP-100 which has no sync rec. feature-- it just records one big long wav file. I love Hi-MD and this wav converter rules.

    Sonic Stage 2.2

So, my friend tells me Sonic Stage 2.2 is out. Sure enough, download the latest Sonic Stage installer from connect.com and I'm now downloading an update to 2.2. Anyone have any idea what's new in 2.2?
  8. I second what MD Freak says-- I'm loving being able to convert digital (optical) recordings. sxc-- I actually have come across CDs that none of my CD drives can read, they're that messed up with copy protection. THey play fine in CD players but the drive cannot read it, not even EAC... rare, yes, but I'd still prefer to use Hi-MD for this. Recording optically to my hdd recorder yields one big long track that I manually have to split up-- ugh.
  9. boy. if all we have problems with is huge long files than this thing sounds like it'll do great for me. I most am interested in digital copies of copy protected CDs, though analog mic recordings will be nice to upload and convert too. lyndon, what settings are you using to get no clicks?
  10. lyndon-- that's helpful. I also was getting a click at 28 seconds when having the block size set to 30... In your last post you mention the hour-long recording. Did you try that one with a size 45 block? I guess most people would have shorter tracks, but it might help.
  11. minidisc3-- There is a reason that I can think of that would make the addition of mp3 to Hi-MD important to even an non-mp3 user, at least from my perspective. That is that it could possibly boost Hi-MD sales and solidify it as a format. You may not listen to mp3s, but I'm sure a lot of Rio Karma owners only listen to FLAC and OGG, even though it can play mp3s. The point is that it makes it more attractive to people who have some mp3s that they don't have on CD, or who have massive mp3 collections that they don't have time to re-rip to atrac and would rather not transcode to atrac. I still have a hard time imagining Hi-MD supporting mp3 playback just because of the nature of Hi-MD, but I suppose anything is possible.
  12. Yeah this is nice to hear and all, but we're still waiting for an official wav converter from Sony (fortunately the enthusiasts have MarC's great work to help out with that), how much longer will it take them to come up with firmware for any type of Sony portable?!
  13. Originally I heard the click at about 28 seconds into the song. I re-converted it using a 50 second block size rather than 30 and there was no more click at that part. Whether there were other clicks introduced elsewhere I could not hear in this one samplel track... there were a couple clicks near the end but they were also present in the oma file.
  14. You know why I'm stoked about this? Digital Linear PCM recordings uploaded and converted to WAV. This will allow me to bypass copy protection on such CDs (usually imports-- I have one in the mail so this will come in handy right in time). I did get a very small pop or 2 in the track I tested. So are you suggesting playing with the settings (I usted 005 GUI version) to see if I can eliminate the pop from happening?
  15. Sure it doesn't ensure anything, but it certainly provides a bit more motivation for people to even try. Does this not make sense? I just think people that are using it and appreciate it should donate, that's all-- I'm not saying people who don't have Hi-MD and don't use it need to
  16. Mat if you don't have Hi-MD then why donate? The point is that there are people with Hi-MD who are downloading and using this software. Even if I only had plans to get Hi-MD and didn't have a unit in hand I'd donate-- simply because it will help sustain the effort to make MD technology more usable.
  17. For all you non-donators-- I just donated and I haven't even downloaded and used the software yet! I know a lot of people said they'd donate so let's see some action from the Hi-MD community.
  18. Personal preference, maybe. I'm a long time MD user and recent iPod user. Ever used or given the iPod a fair listen? I guess the idea of having a "jukebox" or something to have portable access to several full albums at once appeals to me. The iPod sounds damn good, though MD has it's place for me.
  19. As a stand-alone product I bet that thing rocks. I'm sure it also rocks if you use Mac. For those that already have wireless networks and use something else as their primary base station besides an airport extreme, it seems that it's a little less awesome, simply because people have had difficulty setting it up as a client on their wireless networks... what I mean is that to use the iTunes functionality they have to disconnect from the internet and connect to the Express. I'm sure someone will figure out how to do use it and stay connected to the same wireless network for internet use, though. I'd definitely look into this thing, though-- it looks pretty sweet. Thanks for the review
  20. At kurisu's behest I'll take any OT thoughts or comments I might have posted from this thread (http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t...t=5892&start=15) and post them here. So I guess this question may mostly be for Skyther, but if anyone else owns both has thoughts feel free to share. So after owning what, a 20 gig iPod? for some time you now have an iPod Mini as well. Here's my question-- how do you use each? is the Mini like a "best of" collection or used for specific applications? Eventually I'll get a 20 or 40 gig iPod and I have some ideas on how I'd like to use it, but I'm just curious how you spread your music between the 2. I guess another question I have is what software do you use to fill your iPods up with music? Currently I use iTunes and I'm wondering if I should just use another prog for the second iPod or what. This is assuming the karma 2 doesn't come out and hijack my interest soon... I could go for gapless, esp. if I intend to use the larger capacity for orchestral film scores.
  21. Two more questions then: 1) have you seen the movie? (since you ordered the OST I thought perhaps you had) 2) was it good? It was on my list of DVDs to buy that I never bought, hehe. Haven't seen it yet, but heard it was good. Sorry to go OT... The etys don't look too bad with that foam insert. Is that what you typically use?
  22. aeriyn I understand. I dunno where all the defensiveness comes from, I was just sayin' that when I can help it I use higher bitrates... especially so if I want to listen an mp3 transcoded to atrac, ick. That's where that pink iPod Mini comes in Question: does soulseek work for jpop, then? I've not had a lot of luck looking for it online, but then, I've not put as much time into it as you. I know how expensive jpop is... bought Utada Hikaru's 3 CDs last year and then her single that came out a few months back... compared to kpop, pretty expensive. I suppose my wallet should be glad I have limited exposure to jpop skyther-- those are the ER-4P's? Do they go in much deeper than the E3c?
  23. You just have that reputation-- you've worked hard to establish it
  24. Latexxx that's nice and all, but I'm talking about run of the mill 128k mp3s that you'll find on p2p networks-- stuff people ripped with musicmatch jukebox or whatever. The mp3s in that test above were no doubt done with LAME. aeriyn-- my apologies if I came across elitist. I guess to a degree I am but I've gotten tired of playing the quality game and have just had to find a place where I'm content. Precisely the reason I made the comment I did is that I use for MD the exact setup as you (ds8 / ex71). Did you not notice a pretty good difference when you first listened to your DS8 after using the R900? Being pickier about audio quality didn't necessitate buying new equipment over that setup, it just meant some of the music I had recorded to MD I would re-record to SP. Just some of it. The cost involved was not monetary but just time and the amount of music I could fit on a disc. In short, my intent was not to laugh at you for liking lp2 because I don't listen to it anymore (because I do from time to time-- I have plenty of discs still in lp2 that I enjoy). I was laughing because I thought it was ironic that I thought the DS8 was more revealing while you suggested that perhaps it was more forgiving. I guess that's why the phrase "your mileage may vary" is popular these days.
  25. crazybt man, it's your own fault that she bought a POS mp3 player. If you'd bought her the pink iPod Mini that even non-tech savy girls drool over, there'd be no problem Uh, ahem, yes. I need to see the NH800 / 900 IRL before I decide if they're fugly or not. The Nh1 is pimp though.
