  1. me too....maybe thats what they are moving towards....I cant believe that they will leave a sizeable hole in the market for somebody else to fill.......they will surely replace MD with some kind of recording device wont they ????
  2. units..3x S2 sports net MD, 1xMZRH910, 2xMZ-NH1, 1xMZ-R410, 1MZ-N510, 1CMT-CP505md microsystem, 1 md multichanger in car Daily Use....Audio books and educational lectures, recording interviews for club magazine, the recordings are mailed around our group as the media is cheap and durable, also recording radio shows on my MD microsystem which can be played in the car or on any of our many devices Alternatives...my Sony HD5 HD walkman is o.k but doesnt come near to being a replacement as far as recording is concerned, and it is impossible to share my stuff with non computer users....there are alot Cassette tape is the only other answer but is obviously a poor alternative Request....if you need to cut back mindisc please keep a token couple of high quality Hi MD units and a microsystem with the great fast CD to minidisc copy feature....we really want to keep using the format, and I would pay a good price for a higher capacity third gen system and walkman
  3. but for the recordists, there is NOT A SINGLE product out there that would compare to an MD in recording quality and flexability! Hi...I am pretty sure you are correct on this....certainly at the moment there isnt anything I can think of to replace MD for recording...maybe somewhere there might be something...but I bet it wont be as cheap as a MD recorder....This is why I am so suprised that we are expecting a complete axe of MD....surely not...there is still a fair sized market surely ????
  4. quote"MD is old technology, it'll be phased out sooner or later if not now. I bet none of you would buy a car with a design that dates back to 15 years, would you?" actually...I have just bought a new land rover.....I think that design goes back about 40 years or more....or how about Harley Davidson...these like minidisc are unique designs, which have a place...as somebody said, just because something is an older technology...it doesnt follow that it is not a good design that has its place I would guess that a Hi md device is actually technologically very advanced...after all...isnt an ipod just a laptop hard drive with an MP3 decoder chip and a display ...whats so much more advanced about that ??
  5. Apple will not hold on to the portable market, simply because the HD (and flash even more so)based players are so easily made by just about every back street far eastern knock off shop...same samsung memory chip, same mp3 decoder etc...infact I bet it would be possible to knock up a working device with the chips yourself....if you get what I mean Sony have a unique device in Minidisc...one which some people are still prepared to pay a premium for...certainly if it was developed into a 3rd gen higher capacity version with no DRM and proper MP3 support They will never get people to pay a premium price for their flash players cos they cant be much better than a decent cheapo off of E-Bay Unless they have a killer replacement for Minidisc in the pipeline...I reckon they are out of the preium portable music device game......hard drive and flash portable devices are now good enough for 99% of users...and anyone can make them....So Sony.....keep minidisc alive...there is a market
  6. I think Sony have real problems in the portable music market if they deccide to drop the one really unique product that they have, ok maybe minidisc could never now be mass market...but it is very Sony and they can be proud of it....As far as a device for listening to music/audio is concerned, the HD players are now as good as they need to be and, ANY 2 BIT CHINESE KNOCK OFF SHOP will soon be banging out HD and flash players (take a look on E-Bay) for very little money How can Sony justify charging a premium price for a flash player that cant possibly be (or is only slightly) better than a "yokomsushika electronics workshops inc" version....ie same samsung memory chip, same Li-ion battery, same MP3 decoder chip. I would still pay a good chunk of cash for an advanced Hi-Md player....ie bigger capacity, ideally 2/3 GB...proper MP3 support and no DRM....but there is no way I would pay top price for a Sony MP3 flash device over one of the thousands of much cheaper alternatives SONY PLEASE THINK AGAIN (unless you have a really inventive alternative to minidisc which is distinctively different of )course
  7. Anybody any theories as to why Hi Md wasnt launched earlier...ie when flash memory and HD players were less developed, I presume Sony had the products ages ago......it really could have made quite an impact a while back
  8. I am just curious to know whether the new software (connect I think its called) will support MD/Hi MD, or if us minidisc users, are stuck with SS 3.2...and thats the best it will ever be, I still hope to get a couple of years out of my players, even if the products are not in the shops
  9. Good point...I have never seen that swapping a disc was a negative...I actually really like to be able to keep the discs seperate...and 1GB seemed a great size to me....we use Hi MD for speech...lectures, and audiobooks.....people have no trouble with having a hard copy of something which can be filed away or posted in the mail.....this may only have been a problem pre Hi-MD when minidisc capacity was much smaller...but it wasnt a major weakness....I blame poor marketing and DRM...the minidisc was surely a product which really deserved and should have taken the world by storm.....SONY YOU BLEW IT !!!!
  10. I use that bit rate all the time as it is perfect for audiobooks, I have just finished listening to 35 hour series of lectures, infact I very rarely use minidisc for music, as it doesnt really interest me, but as a medium for speech 48KB/s is great...45 hours at around the same sort of quality as FM radio on a rerecordable cheap disc....whats wrong with that ????, I have hundreds of hours of speech based audio on Hi MD
  11. Well, I am pleased and genuinely suprised by this , I watch the progress of the format with ever growing confusion, some days I am convinced that Sony are about to pull the plug on the format...then out of the blue, something like this appears Developments like this give me hope that Sony still have commitment to the format.......COOOOL By the way as an aside ....I have 3 types of Sony walkmans ie several Hi MD devices, a Sony HD5 hard drive player and a Sony Atrac CD walkman....whatever anybody says by way of criticism, I can use the remotes on all of the devices, they all use the same software, and hopefully soon I can use them with a MAC !!!! what other manufacturer gives us that ???? just wish there were more minidisc devices in the shops though
  12. Hi Thanks for your words, I agree that the new Hi Md players are brilliant, I went out yesterday and bought another MZ-NH1 for my son to replace his S2 net minidisk walkman, it was discounted, but I would have paid full price as it is excellent. I have managed to get a handful of 1GB blanks..this should keep me quiet for a while yet I think Minidisc is just to good to die completely, surely another manufacturer (Sharp??) will buy the rights to continue production, as there should be a market ther (albeit specialist) for many many years yet In the meantime, I will continue to show everybody who is interested just how cool Hi-Md is and hope it lives on
  13. Hi............I have a 910, maybe I am just not very fussy, but it seems just fine to me, I havent noticed any issues apart from the fact that very low bit rates (below about 48Kb/s MP3 will not play, but hey...this isnt much of an issue is it as most MP3 will come your way at much higher bit rates than that, the ability to fast transfer MP3 is fantastic and I love my 910 thanks Vaughan
  14. Hi folks, thanks for your words, please dont think I am negative about Minidisc in any way, I have noticed though that this forum is loaded with posts from people who whine about the negatives, I actually struggle to see ANY negatives with minidisc, its excellent, which is why I am so baffled by its apparent demise I also think that like your 900, my 2nd gen RH910 is a brilliant peice of equipment, so much so that I cant actually think of anything I dont like about it........Minidisc is a truely unique and innovative invention, lets hope that if Sony let it go, that they let Sharp or someone else carry it on by selling the manufacturing rights of Hi-Md to them. Thanks again
  15. Hi Folks, I am very confused about the future of my beloved minidisc format, and would like to hear anybodys opinions on the following : I have had minidisc for a decade, and between myself and my kids, we own 3 S2 net minidisc walkmans, a car multichanger system, a CP505MD microsystem, an ancient blue Sony MD boombox, and recently I have bought a MZ-NH1 AND a MZ-RH910....I think that is a fair commitment to the format, I havent noticed any issues with MP3 quality on the RH910 probably because I use it mainly for audiobooks, and I am even reasonably happy with Sonic Stage !!!! So these are my concerns : It is looking horribly like Sony are about to pull the plug on the format in the UK, the hardware has all but vanished from the high street, Sony Style online shop list NO 2nd gen minidisc hardware, 1GB balnks are very hard to come by and are only produced by SONY, I am very happy with the latest advances in the format and feel that it still has loads of potential, but will we see further development?? I am hoping that you guys can give me some reassurance, I dont mind buying my hardware from specialist outlets (ie, the fact that MD is not mass market is no concern as long as I can still get it and it continues to move forward), Sony have confused me by releasing Hi-Md, taking it to 2nd Gen Hi-Md, then apparently giving up on marketing and distribution.....whats going on guys....anybody any ideas PS I also have a HD5 hard drive player.....and I still prefer my minidisc RH910 in many ways!!!!
  16. Hi...This has confused me too, and I have given it alot of thought as we are big users of the format in my family....But sorry guys, this is my conclusion: I have decided that Sony has no real commitment to the format any more...the launch of Hi Md has been half hearted, I suspect that Hi MD was concieved long ago, and obviously has huge potential to be a great product...but it looks to me as though Sony have decided to pull the plug, and have just launched what they have as the swan song of the format..........very sad, why have no other manufacturers produced the elusive 1GB blanks?, why are there no microsystems with Hi MD (or even Net MD)?....why are there no boomboxes or car systems. The answer is that Sony have turned there back on the format, and it is soon to be no more (SOB!!!) All the major UK high street outlets have blown it out, and the most exciting and promising 2005 models are flawed, underdeveloped and very limited in selection (only 2 or 3 models) So...I will not invest in any more MD hardware, I have just bought an HD5 hard drive player, and we will keep our four S2 net walkmans, my wifes car system, my MZ-NH1, and my RH-910 for a while yet, I have had huge loyalty and commitment to the format over the years, but I think the writing is on the wall now folks..........please tell me Im wrong, but I think its all over bar the shouting Vaughan
  17. I have used MD for years (about 10) now, and I have just bought an MZ RH910 I must say, it pretty damn good you know, I use it for many hours every day, as I drive 30,000 miles per year and I am a big audiobook listener, the ability to transfer MP3 straight to the disc via SS is fantastic and well overdue, most of my stuff comes from Audible.com, but also alot of my books, lectures etc come from analogue sources like cassette tape My kids both have the older S2 sports walkmans, very tough, and all these players, although different generations, can all use SS software, unlike Itunes, Sonic Stage has to cater for several generations of players, ATRAC and MP3, and although not perfect, it seems pretty good from where I am standing, we can all swap discs, I can convert formats, and my kids use their walkmans continuously....again mainly for stories etc. Now that Minidisc has finally allowed MP3 transfer without conversion to ATRAC, it fulfills my requirements pretty well completely, all I want now is more hardware choices ie a microsystem with Hi MD, some ruggedised walkmans like the old S2s etc etc.....do you think my wishes will be granted, or is minidisc ...although better than ever before, on the way out ????????
  18. I think thats a bit harsh, I use minidisc mainly for very long audiobooks, I dont mind using SS, but I DID mind havind to convert from MP3 to ATRAC....now it works just great....I for one am very satisfied with this development and I can see no other device that would give me what Minidisc does. Yes O.K not having to use SS would be even better, but this is good enough to keep me a minidisc fan I rea
  19. Hi...Yes it does take ages...I have learned to live with it BUT!!! I have just bought one of the first 2nd gen Hi MD walkmans (MZ-RH910) and it plays MP3 straight off the disc.....FANTASTIC its the minidisc I have always wanted NOTE...the Sony Spec says it should play MP3 bitrates down to 32K/bs this appears to be wrong...mine wont play anthing below 42KB/s....but hey, I can live with that, it is really good...if u like minidisc and copy alot of MP3 stuff, then get one Also I have found that MP3 audiobooks are the worst to transfer (pree 2nd gen) cos the tracks are so long, and S.S is quite reasonable when you are dealing with 3 min tracks..ie transfer one/convert one but with long tracks...say 30 min, it has to wait for conversion b4 transfer, and that means periods where the software is only doing one task...buy a 2nd gen machine ASAP...you will love it
