I don't know why Mono recording is such a big deal. For one thing though, mono recording purpose was to extent the length of the minidisc and because of Sony was able to extent the recording time of minidisc, they felt that mono is not needed.

No one is forcing you to buy...

I have been hoping for normalization with minidisc for almost a decade now, and thank god they finally listen. Now if only they can crossfade between songs, but that's another dream I don't think that minidisc will ever do. I'll just stick to my iPod and Rockbox with that. Anyhow, I can't wait to get the RH1 so that I can bring out my other md players and disc out from my closet.

There was some advertisement before the Netmd and MDLP came out. But since then there is no minidisc advertisement as much as iPod today. I see iPod on the back of most magazines all the time. What Sony need to focus now is advertisement campaign. They need to come up with a colorful booklet that shows older minidisc from the beginning that is compatible now with new RH1. Is going a tougher competition since mp3 player are more accepted and well known house hold name.

There is an optical line in on this already. Check out the picture...

Sony "We Listen"

That's funny man! I'm just glad I don't have to worry about that problem...but yeah, RH1 is so damn sexy I would probably do the same thing.

This is the best news I've heard from Minidisc ever. It has been awhile and I am so glad I kept my minidisc decks even though they have been collecting dust for so many months now. Now, I can finally make the use of them again and I don't feel that I wasted my investment on them. Sony if you happen to be listening, thank you for listening to us all. Even though it took some years and transistion in your company you finally got it right this time. Keep up the good work and looking forward to spend my money with this new Hi-MD and so glad I waited instead of settling down with MZ-M10 that I had before.

Actually there is a workaround the iPod shortcoming when playing seamless. Check out www.rockbox.org. I use this for my iPod and it does crossfading and gapless as well but never tried that though.

Looks like minidisc is slowly dying and it's probably in it's last breath. As much as I hate to see this format go, in a lot of ways it was Sony's fault. That proves that they didn't learn their mistake since Betamax. Why oh why?

Sonicstage 3.4 Debuts With Stunning New Functionality
mdmania replied to Christopher's topic in News
I completely agree with your first comment. Slowly progress but steadily but I think it is pointless now to try to play catch up. I don't mean to sound hopeless but I think most user like faster things like USB 2.0 and less complicated things anymore. And I completely agree with you with your number (3). If I see a Hi-MD deck that records PCM with digital input and no SCMS restriction on it and is for Pro-user or even if not, I will be jumping all over it and perhaps give Sony another shot. Right now I'm caught up with Rockbox which I just recently implented it on my 2gb Nano and 4g 40gb because of the feature that I like about on it Bookmarking and crossfade on it that I had looking for in an mp3 player. How can Sony top that off? or Keep me off my iPods now? -
Sonicstage 3.4 Debuts With Stunning New Functionality

Looks like I am heading to GC today to do some trade in then. Now one last thing, which one would you choose? M10 for 250 or M100 for 340 but with OLED what would you choose? -

Sonicstage 3.4 Debuts With Stunning New Functionality

I feel the same way, I might consider md again. But my main concern is whether I can transfer tracks recorded from different bit rate using regular md disc to WAV with SS 3.4 as long that disc has been formatted to Hi-MD. I think I've ask this before on this forum, but I have not received a reply on it. So please someone tell me. The reason for this is so that I don't have to rely on hi-md disc to use since it's so hard to find them in local store. I wish Sony would just release them at BB or CC, come on Sony! I'm thinking about getting a MZ-M100 soon. I have a chance to get for 340.00 not including trade ins here in local Guitar Center outlet. I kind like the OLED on it. -
Sonicstage 3.4 Debuts With Stunning New Functionality

In regards to uploading to computer with Hi-MD portable, the new SS 3.4 can accept any bit rate other than PCM recorded from analog to be transferred and converted to WAV? Because if that is the case I can record live with a regular Minidisc as long it formatted as Hi-MD, am I understanding this correctly? -

I have a chance to buy a MZ-M100 for 340.00, is this worth the money and worth taking chance since SS upgrade? Thanks In Advance! -
I used to own a MZ-M10 which is almost similar to M100 and it does only analog transfer from Hi-MD PCM recorded material only to Mac. I am sure of it because I tried digital and couldn't transfer it. So I took the damn thing back. I am still reconsidering Hi-MD but I am waiting for Sony to do any further support on this format. If 3rd gen come up, then I may consider this format again...until then...

Well if you are looking into Hi-MD you can't go wrong. I just recently jump into md again by getting the MZ-M10 (rebadged of RH910) I was also in the same dillema as you when I was deciding between M10 or M100. I asked myself do I really need the OLED? Furthermore, I did some research between the two unit. I bought my M10 from Guitar Center, not thru online but where I live. I was able to negotiate with a salesman which was very nice. He saved me 90.00 and I couldn't be more happier back with MD again. I was glad that I left until the md technologyand give it a chance to developed to more better and reliable recorder. I still like my iPod 40GB but that's another story. Anyhow, if you can get a hold of M10 which comes with microphone and MAC compatible get it. Even RH910, you can't go wrong. I love Hi-MD again... Good luck! PCM recording rules!!!

As far as cosmetics goes I don't care as long the unit works like its supposed to. I like the M10 even though is made out of plastic. I think if this is would have been made out of magnesium, the price will then have to go up. So why would I want that. I just want something that works.

I guess it is still a dream that I have for so long that someday everyone in the US will convert to minidisc. It would be cool if there is such thing as mandatory format conversion. Hypethetically, trade your cassette recorder for a minidisc player and get a discount. I know that this don't make sense but what else make sense anymore?
-
Good point! And another point I would like to make, as a user of both format such as MD and iPod, I realized that both have their application. Both formats have Pros and Cons. I think MD's main strength is to able to record with various ways. While iPod is mainly for listening pleasure. That is my take on it...others might have a different insight on it.

I have a MZ-M10 and this is supposed to be a rebadged of MZ-RH910. I tried and probably will stick to MP3 Playbac on it since I use mp3 compression and have a lot rip from CDs already. I use 192kbps and it sounds good to me. I use Kosta Pro with my minidisc and I love minidisc again since it playsback mp3 raw file.

Since Hi-MD is capable of doing PCM recording, I think Sony is confident and ready for professional use such as field recording, journalism and personal home recording device. I have a M10 and I love the result of PCM recorded on it. I really think that this is the next DAT, not in obsolete way but more like for the quality sound of it that will offer.
