the problem was resolved. all i needed to do was clean the laser of the player.

was just wondering if sony was planning on releaseing a hi-md player/recorder with optical out? or does it support direct uploading to a pc when u have recorded with a mic or line in? also if it does, would it allow me to do this with regular minidiscs that i have recorded in the past on my sonny 510? thanks -Syco54645

hi i was wondering what deck would be best suited for me. i am looking for one with digital out and md-lp support. the cheaper the better too (i am on a tight budget), and preferablly one that i can find used/refurbished easily. thanks -Syco54645

in addition to audacity there is also ardour. it is still in alpha i think, but it is a nice program when it doesnt segfault. the site is ardour.org. i am not sure if it has a windows port (as i am strictly solaris and linux), but it is very nice. it uses jack for sound which bypasses the kernel and interfaces directly with the soundcard giving the best possible results. it is fun to look at if nothing else (it crashes alot) but very hard to use. it is like using sonar or cubase, but a little more complicated. -Syco54645

the mic inputs r generally louder, but noiser. if u want to make the mic louder from the input i suggest getting a mic preamp. u can get a nice battery box with a preamp included from soundprofessionals.com (it is uber expensive tho) hope that helps -Syco54645

what u would need to do is get a mic and a battery box. since it is a sony u would probablly want a battery box with level controls (since u cant control the levels whilst recording with the sonys. battery boxes range anywhere from 50 (for basic) to 150 (for a nice pimped out one that i have my eye on. soundprofessionals.com is probablly my favourite mic/accessory site so far. hope this help -Syco54645

ya i have an idea of the mics that i want. if the 510 is good enuf for what i want to do, i will just go and get that. i can get a brand new one on ebay for $85 buy it now and slightly less if i just bid on it. also am i correct that i dont need a mic in (everyone told me to use line in as i can adjust the record levels on that one, even tho i am getting a box). please let me know about this. thanks for the welcome -Syco54645

i am looking at a cardioid mic from sound professionals with a power unit for the mic (one that lets me adjust the record levels since that is "impossible" to do on the sony whilst recording. the mics that i want leave my budget on a md recorder at about $100. i have found a nice deal on brand new mz-n510ck units. and this website says that the nf610 r just a modified 510 that has am/fm radio. i hate the radio so that isnt needed lol. also mic in isnt used, at least that is what i understand. everyone said that the line in is a better choice. thanks for the fast reply -Syco54645

yes i am about to buy a new md player/recorder. i have found a nice deal on a sony MZN420D, but i cant find a manual for it or a review anywhere. if anyone knows anything about this unit please let me know thanks -Syco54645 edit1 some sites liet it to have mic/input others dont also i am looking at the Sony Psych Net MD Walkman Digital Music Player - Orange the other one (blue appears to be a little different in the features, at least i think so) edit2 ok so that site lied about the mzn420d. i was looking at this one MZ-N510CK. i was reading the specs from this site, so how would this one perform. i am fixing to record a concert in august (shopping early so it isnt a last minute thing) thanks -Syco54645
