  1. I suspect the so-called PCM is in fact some sort of 1400 kbps ATRAC which would explain why it's not bit-perfect as some people reported. It would also explain why the ATRAC plugin for Winamp which was written long before hi-md came out plays PCM oma's with no problem. Not that it matters in practical terms, but just to make a geek point...
  2. I can't even find the download on Sony anymore. Is it still being developed or did they abandon it? It used to be the single most useful piece of software for MD.
  3. perhaps, SS is lagging behind, but someone must be surging ahead, right? Where is that shining example of jukeboxdom that's been hiding from me all these years?
  4. I don't quite understand the SS bashing - the interface is simple enough for a person with half a brain to use. It is about as stable (or unstable) as a bunch of similar jukeboxes out there. As for DRM, what is the problem, exactly, for teh user? Other than not being able to trade .omg files, but who would want to anyway??
  5. I do notice better quality on PCM vs Hi-SP such as better stereo separation and a somewhat smoother sound overall. But PCM makes a difference if the original recording is high quality
  6. I have an old NZ-505 and it can charge. However the manual doesn't mention it anywhere. I know that Sony low-end models are basically higher-end models with some features turned off. Or they just delete any mention of it from the manual which is just plain lazy
  7. There are adapters available which allow you to hook up your mp3/md/ipod to the factory radio's cd changer port . You won't be able to operate your portable via the radio's controls, but at least you get a direct connection to the radio, without messy and sound degrading fm and cassette adapters
  8. you can upload tracks via usb, but ONLY back to the PC they originally came from
  9. When Sony or hackers finally solve the upload dilemma so that field MD recordings become exportable into wav/mp3, Hi-MD will become a bootlegger's dream come true. I predict big things for it
  10. SOny most probably still trying to work out the bugs in the blanks production line, so they are making lots and lots of duds for now
  11. I paid $150 for my NH600D and am listening to gorgeous PCM put directly on it. $150 buys you a wimpy 256 meg flash player, so the HD600 is a pretty good deal. Granted that ipod mini would probably record faster because it's HD based. But it costs an extra $100 and has little battery mojo. Plus it comes standard with a metrosexual image that I personally could live without.
  12. I don't need something that will not make my pants drop to the ground if I put it in my pocket and I need something with battery life a bit better than "up to 8 hrs" and can be had for $150. And plays lossless. Ipod does not even begin to meet these conditions
  13. It's definitely not an mp3 player, so to anyone looking for one I say fugedaboutit. There are easier/cheaper ways to download your mp3s from PC. However I am into lossless lately, and if there is a lossless/pcm player out there that costs $150 and comes with 1 gig of memory I'd like to hear about it. And has reasonable battery life and uses AA batteries and is small enough to fit in a pocket. It will survive, maybe not in the US market where I predict flash players will disappear too, but overseas where people tend not to have PCs and standalone record capability is a major plus.
  14. My feeling is that SP is a better sorted out codec than HiSP, by virtue of having been around for a long time and having gone through many revisions. SP provides a more 3-d sonic experience. It may have something to do with the fact that it records true stereo
  15. Turns out data corruption occurs if you DO follow what the Windows prompt says and try to shut down the MD in WIndows - which is what I think you did. The correct procedure to unplug: 1. push stop button on MD - DISC SAFE TO EJECT appears on display 2. Unplug usb 3. Ignore warning messages is any
  16. It is eminently possible to record in PCM via usb. 1. Record cd into SS in "Openmg PCM" format 2. Transfer in "Standard" mode to MD
  17. The good news is that SonicStage allows you to record in LP2 even on a 1-gig md, which is actually what I do. The bad news is that for some reason Simple Burner only has the Hi* modes enabled when you record on the new Hi-md
  18. Senn px100 and Koss Sportapro I might add that my comments refer to the 600D hi-md.
  19. The bad news is that the new Hi-SP and Hi-LP don't sound all that good - the 256k hi-sp sounds too harsh and metallic, and not worth the extra file size in my view, hi-lp sounds like what it is - a puny 64k codec The good news is that you still get the old reliable LP2 mode, which may not be terribly accurate but still eminently listenable
  20. I got the 600D for $150, so it should be well within budget. You turn the jog dial to move through menussong lists, there is a little button in the middle that you press for ENTER. It also works as a kind of a joystick, you push it up/down for volume and left/right for skip. It takes a lot longer than the old MD to start playing, annoyingly so. It may be just a wee bit bigger than the old player

    MZNH600D remote

The remote that came with my Sony EJ-2000 discman works fine the MD player too
  22. I recently bought a NH600 and so far it's been a big disappointment. It transfers music more slowly than the old Net MD, Hi-SP sounds significantly worse than what the old SP could deliver, battery life is worse, and you can accidentally make your recorded music unusable if you follow the onscreen prompt to unplug USB device. Turns out the manual says you should have ignored it. DUH! Bottom line - if you are a MD diehard, stick with net MD. If you are a newcomer to the format - forget it
