  1. I have SoundForge v. 6, just tried to READ an oma - says unknown file format. However, I haven't tested this program, but if you wanna give it a shot, it at least lets you go from OMA to MP3. http://home.hetnet.nl/~thomas_7/1Wire/1-wire.html
  2. Ok, well if anyone cares, I've already decided to KEEP my NH900  Based on hearing your confidence it the strength of the unit, and how I"ve now fallen in love w/ the little gizmo. And all that negative stuff I've heard about Sonic Stage, and I find it very intuitive actually (though I'm a heavy PC user kinda guy). My only major concern (and I believe I've heard this about the iPod too) is the output LEVEL to the headphones. I have this volume on MAX and I wanna go... "up to 11" if anyone knows what I mean. Other than going through my wav files and pre-boosting/compressing, is there ANY solution??? Like a pair of headphones w/ a built-in preamp perhaps??? (not big phones, of course). Or even a mini-preamp jack??
  3. Is that because OMA has higher COMPRESSION (than CD-to-wav) before yet compressing again to ATRAC?? And so, does that mean the "MD Simple Burner" program wouldn't be good either, it probably makes OMAs first also, yes??
  4. "Chewbacca style" LOL!!! Clear, effective, and got the point across.
  5. I'm just trying to understand how to get the best audio quality out of ripping my CDs to MD... If I use Sonic Stage to "record a CD" (which then created OMA files, I believe, then I "TRANSFER" them to my MD which makes them ATRAC, would using say Nero to rip my CD to WAV first then TRANSFER to MD sound better/worse or the same??? Thanks
  6. Um.. sorry for the noob question, but I just transferred my first wav file group from my HD to the hi-MD (nh900)... I notice when I play it back, it automatically reads LP. Is there a setting to change my output so it would be better quality? I have the 256kps selected...
  7. Ok, I'm officially a minidisc member, coz I know many many other people have dealt w/ these issues... but surprisingly, Sony tech support was very helpful, and it turns out I needed a new security patch for my Windows XP. That was it. Thanks for putting up w/ me.
  8. Ok, just got the nh900 today, and getting ticked off... I read a bit about Simple Burner through this forum, and one person's advice for error issues dealing w/ Windows XP was just USE Sonic instead. Fine, tried that... no dice. Even did the 2.2 update. I can't run EITHER program. What the heck?!
  9. I just got the NH900, and it came w/ two ADDITIONAL clamp filters w/ instructions saying to use them whenever using an external MIC cable or any INPUT cable for recording. How serious is this?? What's the risk if I don't use them?? (any damage to the device itself possible?? Thanks.
  10. a) you're right, I need to give it a fair trial yes, I usually act this way; if I get doubts about a product I receive I want to return it FAST coz I feel like I'll miss my chance of returning if I wait c) yes, I'm weird.
  11. I don't remember exactly where I read that - most likely some review site or SHOP. However SERIOUS ISSUE here... I may be about to BAIL OUT of MD all together right now. I've never actually FELT a player before, and I'm scared I'm gonna BUST this thing! It feels so F R A G I L E - and has all these TEEENY-tiny buttons, etc... when the 1gb disc pops out I just see all those little mechanical parts inside that makes me nervous, and generally I can tell if I drop this sucker just once, it's toast. Whereas, the iPod mini (pardon the blasphemy) feels TOUGH, heavy metal, and very simple easy buttons. HELP !!!!! What do I do??????????? Return it for the iPod??
  12. I just got the NH900 in the mail today (u know, the one that costs like $250)... I thought I read SEVERAL reviews that stated it has an ALL METAL BODY. Well, only the FRONT of this silver one is metal, the back is plastic!! ????
  13. Oh, yeah - those phones came w/ the snowboard. They are specially designed for freezing temperatures, and they even have built-in heaters to serve as ear muffs.
  14. gadgetness Cool term - I like
  15. Great - thanks! But... how do they FEEL? Are they comfy? They look like the tips of those annoyingly painful airplane stethascope-like headphones...
  16. Well if I can't blast my brain w/ my tunes, then I'll send the sucker back. I suppose I can always make sure when I rip to the MD I normalize & boost everything first... he he...
  17. Hmmmm... so you're saying the SILVER model has a general louder headphone LEVEL OUTPUT?? I hope that's true, coz then I won't be so upset I missed out on the black beauty!
  18. My MD player is on the way, and I'd love to get small headphones to compliment this compact medium. However, I've purchased little 'earbuds' or whatever before, and they felt like I was shoving a plastic DIME in my ear... very uncomfortable, unless I wasn't wearing them properly. I've seen these PLUG-type ones around now http://www.audiocubes.com/category/Earphon..._Earphones.html and am wondering if they feel like something is being SHOVED in your ear the whole time, or do the rubber tips (looks like they'd be soft rubber) feel soft so you not notice them? I'm looking for something innocuous, light-weight, and still have decent sound. Yes, I want it all, and all this under $50. Is it possible??
  19. I worry about this too... the whole "a little too late" reality of the hi-MD may certainly be something comparable to the neon, see-thru floppy diskettes... like, "oh they look cool... but um, we're not using them anymore so it's a bit late." I wonder if you meant "end of the format" for hi-MD specifically, or the whole MD family. Well - blah - I care not, because I'm in another subculture (vinyl enthusiasts) and I'm used to being in the minority when it comes to formats... I guess I kinda like it that way (as long as I can still buy gear that will play them that is!!!) Since MD is/was so big in Japan, perhaps MD decks/players may still exist 30 years from now?? On ebay or something?
  20. Take it from this oil hungry American; as I just stated, Amazon.co.uk has it, but you'll pay a bit over $300 for it w/ shipping. Here's another source: http://www.unbeatable.co.uk/CatalogueItem_19683.html Another, much more expensive one: http://www.electronics-online.co.uk/acatal...MD_Walkman.html I had a few other links I had saved when I did my searching, but they're at home. However, I believe the 'unbeatable' site was, as it stated, unbeatable. Just make sure you calculate those overseas costs for shipping. Now you've got me jealous thinking I missed the opportunity Well... again, I spent almost $200 MORE than what I originally intended, so.... Oh, and keep us posted on what you decide! It's fun knowing there will be another member of the family
  21. Ya know, I'm feelin' kinda hurt here... I've made several posts, just joined last week, yet I never got a warm "welcome to the forum"
  22. I'm curious, since a CD-R holds just a couple hundred megabytes less than 1 gig, why does everyone here act like hi-MD is so revolutional? Plus there are so many other removable storage devices out there w/ much higher capacity, even DVD-R, that I'm not exactly sure what I am missing here. Even CDRW lets you do drag-n-drop interface if formatted properly (I think you only get around 650MB when u do that but still). Plus the CDRs are so much cheaper and, in some ways, take up LESS space w/ thin jewel cases or even paper sleeves. Which then makes me wonder even on the AUDIO side of things, if you had a CD-MP3 portable or car stereo, you'd still fit close to the amount of the 1gig hi-MD disk of music. Grant it the mini-disc has it's physical size advantage, which could be the whole point, but I was just wondering what I may be missing.
  23. I find it ironic that when I first held the iPod mini (just like a week ago), I thought it was the coolest thing... especially coz it was all METAL, sleek, nice SIMPLE navigation... but the price was waaaay out of my range, and I was debating the $60 entry-level MD player... then after entertaining the thought of MD more and more... recognizing the benefits of hi-MD, etc.... next thing I know I spent almost the same amount as I would for an iPod mini for the NH900! Most people here seem to talk more about the sound & music than the EXPERIENCE of playing.... I'm actually kinda' opposite. Yes, I love fidelity, but I'm a techno wax-spinner. I love to KNOW that a 12" record is spinning on my Technics turntable. I love watching it spin, the mechanics, etc. Playing an mp3 is the most dull of all audio experiences I've ever dealt with. Even my CD players usually have a glass window so I can SEE the disc SPIN. MD players, though I think I've only seen one early model w/ a small window, have the coolest-looking CD 'cartridges', and I just think they're awesome. Ipod? MP3 sticks? They're dull to me, and very trendy as well. That's my take. Yes, I'm weird.
  24. The NH900 runs off an internal gumstick That's disappointing... someone made it sound like it was an option (as if AA was internal) I keep hearing how rechargables are lame and don't last long... and carrying around an external addition is NOT an option I would like (since the small SIZE of MDs are also what's so appealing). How long does this 'stick' charge last? And is it like most rechargarbles? (they last well for about a year, then get worse and worse as time goes by)
  25. The other huge advantage to the NH900 is the external AA battery case. Why is this feature not a option on all Sony MD/HD units??? That was the sole reason I went for the NH900 over the NH1. I was under the impression that the NH900 allows you to have a AA battery INSIDE the unit as well... Am I wrong? Is the only way to use a AA some EXTERNAL device w/ that model?????
