Since I got my hi-MD just a while ago, I only had one 1GB disc and instantly bought a bunch of cool-color regular MDs. Interestingly, after being a CD kinda guy and used to ONE album per CD, having 3 or even 4 albums on one MD I can handle and my brain likes it... but when I work on filling a 1GB... it's actually overwhelming! Unless it's like I pick ONE artist that has like 10 releases or something, but making a mix of different material to fit the disk (using just ATRAC3 at 132kbps) gives me sensory overload. Yes, I could use ATRAC3+ at 256, but that would make all my regular MDs at 132 sound bad, so I don't want to go there.... Does anyone understand what I'm saying here? Remember, I'm not a Hard-Drive 'mega-mix' type player, I like albums, and I like to have them to HOLD.

What's a STORE? Oh.... the LOCAL thing. I buy EVERYTHING except food off the internet, so as far as I see it, discs are everywhere.

Do what you must. I just got the nh900 and have nothing to compare it to, so I'm completely happy with it. Technically all hi-MD players may be considered entry-level at this point anyway... not many people today are raving about the FIRST MD player model. Let's hope in a year or two there will be better players, better buttons, and most importantly, COOLER LOOKING DISCS!

FIXED!!! omgjbox.exe encountered a problem NOT Windows...

I sure do love happy endings. -
I still can't believe you paid $250 for non-hi-MD. I got the NH900 for like $230, and there's even the entry-level hi-MD for like $160. But hey, if you're happy, you're happy. What is "net MD" anyway? Is that an upgrade from old MD players that had no computer connection at all?

Yeah, that's kinda what I meant about an expanding collection... I always used to use my DRESSER droors for my CDs before I had my huge shelves. I don't need someone elses' design to constrict me to 25 or 50 pieces. Nice little box u got there, by the way.

There are actually many storage options... none of which will work for me, because just like CDs, my collection is always growing & expanding, and no unit other than a HUGE wall shelf (like a book shelf) works for me. But here are just a few: http://www.minidisco.com/md-storage.html http://www.minidiscaccess.com/generic17.html http://www.audiocubes.com/advanced_search_...p?keywords=case Also - do a search on Ebay "mindisc case" or "storage" Use google too, you'll find a LOT. I remember seeing a wooden rack too, (not individual slots for each disc, but partitions to allow groups of maybe 5 each, but forget what site it was. Labels: http://www.neato.com/neato_prodtest_standa...VA2WJEJEMHW6CE1 (I just received mine from them) http://www.minidiscaccess.com/item.html?PRID=133385 I've also read how many people make their own, or modify other templates... again, do a Google search. I use Photoshop for all my labeling, so I can't recommend something else, but I saw some free easy label/cover maker - just search the forum or the T-board forum. I don't catalog, but I know Excel does great cataloging. Good luck, and happy you've joined the club, like me (I wish Neato made photo GLOSSY labels for MD though)

Mine did too  Why can't I be a cool dude w/ a 1GB disc? They BETTER make multi-colored ones next year, or I'm gonna'... order more regular MDs!
-
@kurisu - I'm sure you're right & that's the thought behind it... also to set them apart more... "special"... whatever, I'll just throw the long box away & will order some jewel cases.
-
mine doesnt do that... you do mean by "manual volume" the tiny stick on the face of the unit itself, yes?
-
Perhaps I'd be enticed if the PHOTOS on the link worked

Is it just me or are these long-box type cases for the hi-MD blanks ANNOYING?? Just like the packaging for pre-recorded MDs, which come in almost an analog cassette-sized shell. Kind of defeats the purpose of this "compact" medium, if you ask me.
-
ok, that's what i figured... thanks. (looking forward to January... is there a specific date? will we hear about it in this forum??)

Now that I have entered the MD world w/ my hi-MD player, I'm looking at other units (shelf systems, car stereos), yet if I'm not mistaken, they would not play ANY of my MDs (even the 80min ones) because I output my Sonic Stage stuff in "hi-MD" format. If what I just said is true, is there ANY other unit that could play hi-MD formatted (or netMD - in case I got the terms wrong) (it doesn't even have to play the 1GIG discs) other than the 'walmkan' portables??? Thanks

Why does eveyone allude to not being able to record w/ iPod? I've seen them sell mics for iPods.. what am I missing here?
-
Assuming you meant to say "iPod's sound sucks, and it's not as rich"... I would say iPod folk were so busy working on the cute dial & marketing techniques, they forgot all about the little technicality of having great sound! Sony has been in the sound business longer than Apple. (all of this is mere speculation, and my opinion)

Is there such a thing as a headphone amp that would be about the size of a miniplug ADAPTOR? (like a small plug, rather than a separate BOX to carry around) ??? Back to the original question, why I love MD: 1 - gadget coolness factor 2 - durability of discs 3 - compact size 4 - not as TRENDY as iPod 5 - still enjoy the 'old skool' method of having physical storage items (discs)
-
Actually, skmetal07, there are many mp3 player/RECORDERS out there, in fact Creative Labs has a cute lil' gizmo that's the size & shape of a credit card... but I digress... MD rulez!
-
That makes SO much sense to me! (probably coz I'm even older than you!) Anyway - to first answer your question about why the cost is more than an mp3 player - I would think partially because of more mechanical parts... and lets also not forget in many cases you're paying for a SONY. Even though there are other off-shoot brands, Sony set the market price, and that's just how it is... but they're cheaper than iPod. Also, I do feel the MD sounds better - and love, just LOVE those lil' discs and the size of the unit. MP3 'sticks' feel cheaper than a fountain pen... MD is JUST the right physical size for me - not to small, not too big. There's my 2 cents.

Help! I need a minidisc recorder for a Christmas present...
campekenobi replied to emrish's topic in Minidisc
If you can find the Sony MZNH600D Hi-MD MiniDisc Walkman, it's the low-end of the "hi-MD" series, it would be best offering him the ability to take advantage of the higher capacity discs. Hi-MD holds 1GIG, all other MDs under that model only hold 300 MEGS. Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...ronics&n=507846 It looks like you'd be breaking your budget a bit though... they seem to go for around 160, but certainly between Ebay, and some great internet shopping you could get lucky. You could always buy used. Otherwise, to stay in more realistic finincial terms, he could still record his music & have great sound on the regular MDs... here's a nice one at Best Buy for $130: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id...92&type=product Hope this helps - but HURRY Christmas is coming and you never know when you'll get that "sorry it's on back order" message :rasp: -
hmm... actually, it is an 80 min one.. but what's 10kb anyway.
-
Hmm.... when I put a blank ol MD, the capacity reads in Sonic Stage 290.9MB... so you're saying I can somehow format the disc to hold MORE??? (darn it - I left my manual at work!!!) Actually -- I just "initialized" it to hi-MD... still same capacity...
-
um... what do you mean hi-MD formatted??? Are you saying when I buy sony blank 80min MDs, I need to FORMAT them before using? I haven't done so... ??? Oh - and just to let you know, i'm not talking about any LINE IN recording, just strictly SonicStage ripping. Is that a problem?? I'm just new and have lots of questions.
-
Ok - I appreciate the feedback. However, I've tried LP2 (132kbps) and it sounds basically like an MP3 from a PC, whereas the ATRAC3plus @256kbps sounds very much like a regular CD... which brings MD almost pointless as far as being able to store much material on a single disc... I ripped two lengthy CDs and tried putting them both on an 80-min regular MD disc... both CDs could fit MINUS one track (using ATRAC3plus@256)! Yeah, I know the hi-MDs are much better, but they are more rare & expensive right now (not to mention they look SO blah!!). It would almost have been better if I never heard the 256kbps in the first place... tough to go back.

Yes, very basic dumb question to all of you, but my encoding choices are the following: OpenMG Audio (ATRAC3): 132kps/105kps/66kps OpenMG Audio (ATRAC3plus): 256kps/64kps/48kps OpenMG Audio (PCM): 1411kps WAV (PCM): 1411kps I don't see where this "LP" mode fits into what everyone is talking about, unless that's for line or mic-in recoring. Next important quesiton: which is better: ATRAC3plus 64kps or ATRAC3 132kps?? I know that 132 should sound better, but Sony tauts that 3PLUS has better compression quality.
