  1. Add 2 1/4' or 4 1/2' of wire to the antenna on the transmitter and it will throw the signal out much much better. ALL OF THE FM TRANSMITTERS HAVE THE SAME BASIC CIRCUIT. Get the cheapest one you can find with an ajustable frequency...8)
  2. Are there any tone controls on them at all? I'd love to find any modern boombox worth putting batteries into. If you have any sugestions I'm all ears.....8)
  3. The Gore Gore Girls. It's a good old Herschell Gordon Lewis spatter fest. Realy nasty stuff. I just love drive-in exploitation cheeze.....8)
  4. You are right. Sennheiser phones have better treble responce. I'm still not used to the high frequencys that modern gear is able to reproduce. To me it's distracting at best and painful at worst. Anyting over about 10KC hurts my ears.Sometimes being in a room full of computer moniters that give off a 15KC ring gives me a headache.I like a little high frequency rolloff, but to each his own...8)
  5. It's a D8443 a.k.a. "Power Player". Not a bad one,but not the best build quality. The gear that drives the take up reel is defective in most of them. If you do find one with a working tape deck,it's a safe bet it wont be working for long. I've read about some people recasting a naw gear with a kit. This seems to work out ok. You can hook up your MD or whatever line level source you'd like to it though. To get the aux in to work hit the record key. If you arn't going to fix the deck, cut a wire to the motor to save your batteries when using the line in. I'm sure that's more info than you wanted, but better too much than too little..8)
  6. Thank you...I just put some more pix up. Wish I could post them all......8)
  7. Big bad '80s boomboxes. I have a collection of about 30 of them. GE,Sanyo,Rising,Awia,Panasonic,Eversonic, Ambassidor,Sony, and yes even Magnavox,Emerson, and World Star. I collect 8-track portables and carts too....8)
  8. <-- That's a huge Rising 20/20 boombox from the early '80s. Back in the day they used to know how to build real boomboxes. The new ones are just pathetic. Two amp chips,10W running off of 10 D-cells, and a nice big pair of 8" speakers to blast your tunes with....and yes it has an aux in for the MD...8)
  9. The last one I got at a mom and pop store by the Mouse House (Disney). For some reason none of the major chains sell a MD with a mic or line in. What's the use of having a recorder you can't record with? All of my other MD recorders I got form Sears. Seriously. I get most of my blanks from there too....8)
  10. "might be based on liking how ATRAC colours the sound with its artifacts" Bingo! It dose'nt have that "way too clean" sound to it. It has a little bit of an edge. You just have to have a little distortion in there somewhere or it simply dosn't sound right to me. PCM is just not as "full" sounding to me. It's just too cold and clinical. There is something missing. This may be hard to understand for folks who don't remember the pre-CD days. I wish I could explain myself better, but I think you get the idea....yes I like tube gear too....8)
  11. For recording fom an analog source... yes that's exactly what I'm saying. WAV, PCM,ect are not lossless. They do not sound like the the original recording when dubed form a good analog source. It sill sounds like a CD. ATRAC has a masking quality to it that I prefer to what I find to be a rather cold and dead sounding CD,PCM,WAV,ect. CD quality is not the end all best sound there is. To quite a few of us it's rather dissapionting. Becouse of this I still by music on LPs unless it is something that was mastered digitaly. To me ATRAC has more of an analog sound becouse of the masking that takes place. Don't let the numbers fool 'ya. It's the formatting/prosessing that matters. Not to get in a analog vs digital debate. But there is a reason most music producers still master thier recordings on tape instead of digital. Sound quality. You can use your computer for an audio device if you'd like to. You can also make frozen waffles in a toster, but that dosn't make it a waffle iron. It's not bad just not the real deal.
  12. Any of the new or old LP formats sounds just awful. LP4 is downright painful.Yes even netMD.IMHO as they say. I realy like the sound of an analog recording dubed to ARTAC (SP) or the new Hi-SP.To me they sound about the same . After using PCM for a a bit I'm right back to SP or Hi-SP.PCM is great for dubing quality (don't get me started again) digital recordings but for some reason it dosn't seem to work as well with non digital sources to my ears. Why? I don't know. For some reason it (PCM) just dosn't seem to capture the warmth of the original recording as well. You can talk bitrates all you'd like but to me ATRAC is the best sound digital has had to offer so far for live or dubbing.... .....But then again sound is just a matter of taste. It's in the ears of the listener.
  13. It might be because I've been using them for 20 years, but to my ears nothing is better than Koss Porta-Pros. It's a shame most modern portables are too wimpy to drive them properly without an amp. It didn't used to be that way.
  14. Ok I get it. Thx for the reply. I think I'll give it a try....8)
  15. On paper that sounds like a good idea...but how does it sound? I keep me recordings on LP and open reel tape.To me they haven't come up with any digital recording that sounds right. I think CDs sound cold and dead even when taken form an analog recording and that's suposed to be the best digital avilable. Becouse of this I keep the computer out of my audio altogether. How MP3 ever cought on in the first place is beyond me.Strange as it may sound an analog recording dubed in ATRAC(not ATRAC 3) sounds the best of anyting I've come across so far. Hi-SP seems to be about the same. Maby I'm just too picky or my ears are just too used to the sound of vinyl and open reel tape. Does this new FLAC format realy cut the mustard or does it sound like just about everyting else digital (i.e. cold)? Please let me know what you think. If there realy is something better out there I'd love to give it a try....8)
