  1. I'm thinking about buying this one too. I have the SP-TFB2 Binaurals and I can get the mount for them but i dont want to futz around with that. I need a little mic setup that's quick for recording some sound effects around the house, not too much outside in the field(so much traffic in my city). I thought about Rode shotguns but I don't want to bother with the issues those bring to a minidisc. As for the motor whir on the Sony ECM and similar mics - I found this cute little accessory. http://www.minidisc-canada.com/shopexd.asp?id=10 Does anyone know any similar mics to the ECM that sound really good for cheap?
  2. how much is a backlit remote? i am enjoying the unit very much. i've gotten some really high quality sounds of it that i've used in my animation and film work. it was just a heartbreaker when i saw sony released the new models that feature everything this thing was lacking. sound quality is great, battery life is manageable and i'm happy i got it. actually today i threw out the packaging which is a sign that i have absolutely no intention of returning it or whatnot(not like i even have that option by now but it just shows).
  3. this announcement is interesting for me cause i bought the rh910s a few months ago. the only thing i hate about it is that it's not backlit. i'm a portable recordist so this is absolutely killer for me cause now i have a blue LED keychain that i take around with me. some situations you want to be covert and not turn on a bright light, so i would much rather prefer this new model announced at namm. other than the lighting and the microphone i cant see it being too much different from the one i bought.
  4. not sure if it's been posted: http://trio.harmony-central.com/ramgen/SNAMM05/Sony-Hi-MD.rm
  5. thanks damage! im actually using a new mz-rh910 and im conditioning the battery- this has been going on for about a week now. someone sent me to the battery university last week i didnt get to read it all yet. maybe i should eh?
  6. i'm so confused because my gumstick had a low level, i took it out and put it back in, and it says full! but it's not full. i dont want inaccurate readings. also i try to kill it by hitting play and leaving it for the night, i get up in the morning and i hit play and it says like half is left. is it recharging itself somehow?
  7. thanks Low Volta for that link. I'm wondering can you use the NiMH and a AA battery at the same time - when the NiMH runs out will the machine automatically flip over to the AA pack? how do you guys do long portable recordings without interuption?
  8. i like macs and all but i dont think that OS is really flexible with software developers. if anyone here uses virtual effects and instruments they would know how such a small percentage of these music programs support mac. i have spoken to developers who say that supporting mac is a form of shooting yourself in the foot - not many people use it and those few that do use it demand so many bugfixes. this deeply affects the productivity of a company. the mac world wants to keep to themselves anyway. they can take their subpar iPods and Garageband licenses and... you know the rest. if you are a mac user and you own a Hi-MD, i'm sure you could get a PC for very cheap to do your transfers on. you could use something like a Pentium III with 256 megs of ram or whatever and i bet it would cost like 100 bucks. someone could you tell me how cheap the minimum Hi-MD windows system would cost?
  9. is there anything wrong with "topping the battery off" with the RH910 - like plugging it in when it's not empty(say half full - that's enough to play mp3s but not enough to record)? will this lower the battery's life and charge memory like many other units suffer from?
  10. can a HI-MD recorder at least mount on a mac desktop and act as a portable storage unit(forgetting any sort of audio transfers)?
  11. so as you can see by my edited subject, i bought the 910s today. i dont really like the white as much as the black one, but it was the only one the store had. my first experience with it so far has been just conditioning the battery but that's still exciting. now im looking for a pouch and a keychain light to make up for it not being backlit it feels like it's going to break after one drop. this is not built for a stealth recordist but has the audio specs for it. i'll keep everyone posted on how it goes.
  12. does anyone know what the difference is with this model on sonystyle.ca all i can tell is that this one is white and the other one is black. http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/P...120n46922n32123

so this is one promise Hi-MD lives up to, but what have they lied about otherwise? thanks for the info on the mics!

thank you! are you talking about the attenuator on the sony minidisc(it can set recording levels during record right?) or with a 6 dollar volume slider from radio shack or something - with the in-ear binaurals you cant moniter the signal while they are in your ears so this must be a tricky thing to do. EDIT: looking to record city ambiences with this - so traffic, street crowds, nature in the park, etc... a wide range of noises i dont mind that it takes a while to upload as i value the digital transfer over analog where you have to set the levels. have you used these mics with this recorder? or just another hi-md one?

if i want a pair of sound professionals in ear binaurals (TFB2 i think is the model), and you are using them with the MZRH910 - which sensitivity would you get(high or low)? and can anyone clarify for me: this model of minidisc will record in PCM Wave, and upload that Wave through a USB cable(thus eliminating lineout/headphone problems) AND retain all of its quality in that process?
  16. how would the mz-r30 and the mz-r700 compare? my main use is outdoor sfx recording. im not sure how well the r30s are holding up now into 2005(10 years after their release), but from what i understand there is actually a lineout on the thing, metal case and mic sensitivity switch on the unit itself not in a menu
  17. hey, im wondering what's the skinny on the panasonic mr 250's for microphone input recording? are they good machines? do they last long or have they been known to have problems? good sensitivity settings on the mics? thanks
  18. ha no your not confusing it too much i like a detailed view on things. so let me get this straight: low vs. high sensitivity has a lot to do with change in dynamics rather than the loudness of the sounds around us? when you said that you were in the country with a train going 80 km/h, did this sound clip your mics or are they able to capture the train in general just not when it all of a sudden appears on the meters? i want to use these mics for sound design for film and game type projects. i also plan to use them with more than just minidiscs eventually like DAT. if you keep your head still like you say, you could take care of some really complex panning techniques just by walking around.
  19. well this sensitivity decision is the only thing holding me back from buying them. its all because you cant moniter anything that your recording unless you clip them onto your jacket or something which i dont intend on doing. i want to record people on the street, nature, bus rides etc. maybe some construction sites and stuff. i live in a high traffic area. no concerts or anything like that. should i go for low sensitivity?
  20. why didnt you chose to get high sensitivity? you seem to do a lot of nature/city stuff. i thought low-sensitivity are the choice of people who are recording loud concernts? i think i will be using these with the 505 mostly thanks
  21. hey im new here and i am really curious about these mics too. did you buy the high or low sensitivity, and what model minidisc are you using? your info was really helpful. thank you
