  1. I've been away for a while now, but decided to come back just to take a looks/see. I've been using my MZ-RH10 and MZ-RH1 for a few years now and have been very, very happy with them. The RH10 still gets used about 98% of the time and the RH1 gets used whenever I need to do a recording. My last recording was, in my eyes, a failure since I didn't capture the last 3 songs of a concert (obviously the most famous songs). I got the rest of the concert in PCM and sounds fantastic. Anyway, I've already mentioned I use the RH10 most often. I wanted to keep the RH1 safe and sound since it'll need to last basically until I'm done with the format. I decided to use my RH1 in the car yesterday. I played a mindisc I normally played on the RH10. The first song was off a CD I had put in. The bass and the treble were incredible. Then I played a song that came from an MP3. Again, I was blown away. The music was very detailed and I heard highs that normally don't come through the RH10 because of the flaw it has with MP3's and high notes. I felt the RH1 was like listening to a brand new player and a new found friend. It's fantastic. So, if you're still entrenched in MD's like I am and you're using an older player, you deserve to treat yourself to an RH1. It's definitely worth listening to it. I was going to buy a X-series or S-series MP3 player, but after hearing the RH1, I don't think I'll be in such a rush any longer.
  2. One reason why I like the minidisc is because it's small, doesn't look like a recorder, you can say it's your mp3 player if searched and questioned and best of all, you can use a remote control to adjust the level. I don't need to pull the entire unit out to look and adjust the settings. Plus, as was pointed out, the batteries last a long time. The recording would too if you don't use PCM.
  3. I went to a concert last night and in the last minute decided to record it. I took my trusty MZ-RH1, battery pack, and my in-ear microphone and trusted that my previous settings were still on the unit. I recorded, checking the level periodically. At the end of the concert I shut down making sure I didn't move much while the unit saved to disc. I got in the car, turned it on and saw all these track marks. I was really confused. There were 33 track marks and I was wondering what was going on. Then I realized what happened. I had the minute marker on, so it would mark a track every 3 minutes. So I listened to the end of the disc to hear the great last dancing-type of songs he sang. The recording was perfect and everything was going well then suddenly, the music cut off. IT WAS AT THE END OF THE DISC! I then remembered what happened. I was recording a tape (yes tape) onto the minidisc and put the minute marker on and set it for PCM recording. I never changed it back to my concert setting! ARGH! How frustrating. SO ALWAYS CHECK YOUR SETTINGS BEFORE RECORDING. Dumb me didn't do that. I was kind of afraid to do it while at my seat considering I was sitting right next to the mixer board and all the people related to concert. Oh well, at least I got about 90 minutes of cool music. I just don't have 4 of the most popular songs he recorded.
  4. Truthfully I doubt that there's any more research or development being done on minidiscs. It appears they want to push the solid state units that have no moving parts. I can kind of understand that. I was recording one concert and I had to stand up for some person to get by me and when I sat down I hit the chair hard enough to jostle the unit. I didn't think anything of it other than "uh-oh." When I heard the playback, though, there truly is an uh-oh in it as there's a drop out and the RH1 couldn't playback or upload that part to Sonic Stage, even though it was recorded with it. Thankfully the RH10 was able to do that task. A solid state unit wouldn't have had that problem.
  5. That's correct. I didn't say it was a new unit. I said that they haven't abandoned the minidisc just yet.
  6. I was browsing the Sony site and just for fun I went to see if they still had the Minidisc as a current item. To my surprise they do. The unit is listed under professional audio. http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-audio/cat-recorders/ So all is not lost yet. Unfortunately I can't seem to locate the discs that should go into the unit! Sorry for the multiple entries. My browser didn't tell me I had already posted the message.

  8. Just finished "taping" the concert. It came out the same way I heard it, though some heavy duty equalizing is in order. The battery box was definitely helpful. Thanks to all of you for your help.
  9. I was browsing the files for download on the Sony website and saw that there's a secuirty update for SonicStage software that will fix a potential buffer overflow issue (dated 12/4/07) and something I didn't see before, but an MP3 conversion tool for non-DRM protected ATRAC files. http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=MZRH10
  10. I just got a call from one of their reps. He sounded nice enough. They were going to ship the unit on Saturday, but I had already canceled the order. He stated that there was a shortage of parts which caused the delay. I don't know if you should stop recommending them, but their response time is definitely a little slow if you have questions. I ended up getting a unit like the one in the "build a battery box yourself" thread from Soundprofessionals.com. I paid through the nose, but it was still cheaper than the one I ordered at MicMadness and faster than if I had built it myself.
  11. I ordered the same thing from Microphone Madness because of what I read in this thread and I too have not seen anything from them. I tried calling and got an answering machine. I'm goin gto ask for a refund also. I'll just pay more and get it from Soundprofessionals.com. I'd make it myself but finding an electronics store nowadays is pretty hard. Radio Shack isn't as good for electronic parts as they used to be. I don't want to mail order since that takes time and then the time it takes to make the unit. Oh well.
  12. Thank you! That was really helpful. I think I'll go the battery box way. I read that I'll need to be very still without much jostling about when using a minidisc player to record and especially when it's writing the data to the disc after I press "stop." I don't want to lose what I record after all that "work." ;-)
  13. I'm going to a rock concert and I want to use my MZ-RH1 to record it. Since I've never used the unit for recording, especially loud music, do you think it would be worthwhile getting/making a battery box? My seats are up in the nose bleeds in the upper back rows, basically as far away from the stage as you can get. I'll be using the Soundprofessional in ear mics. Any suggestions or help? Thank you! Nathan
  14. I guess I should read the previous posts before posting my thoughts. Oh well, here's my thoughts anyway. ================== Isn't it a little early for April Fools jokes? But seriously, why in the world would Sony bring this out in light of them dropping (or seemingly dropping) all new minidisc production? It just seems really strange.
  15. Have you seen the portable flash based players that Sony has out? They're actually pretty sweet and they have what you want. I almost picked one up because of their size.
  16. I guess we may have seen the last minidisc unit with the MZ-RH1. Looks like Sony is going to flash instead. http://www.bradlinder.net/2007/10/sony-ann...held-flash.html
  17. Just to let you know that I purchased a battery for my RH1 on Ebay from one of those places in China and if anyone was thinking of doing that I would say go for it. The battery works as it should. Paying $15 is a LOT better than paying $60 for the "official" ones. I'll probably pick up another now that I know the one I received works fine.
  18. Why don't you just see if Sony can fix it? It'll be cheaper than buying a newer M100 if you can find it.
  19. That's some serious barrel distortion on your lens. Yikes! I sure hope my RH1 and RH10 don't suffer from that anytime soon.
  20. Everyone kept recommending the RM-MC40ELK remote for the MZ-RH1 so I broke down and purchased one from this fantastic ebay seller for $70 (buyfromjapan). Anyway, I received it in no time flat and I have to admit that everyone was right. It really is a fantastic little remote. It's nice to see the extra text lines that it offers over the RH1. The track wheel is also a huge plus as I'm used to it from my RH10. Overall it was a really good purchase. It appears I'll start using a remote again. Thanks for the recommendation everyone. By the way, the RH1 is still pretty cool!
  21. Man, I would have liked to have paid $200 for the unit instead of the $300 I actually paid.
  22. Interesting you should say that. I keep my MZ-RH10 in the pouch. I put it on top of a "table" that stood about 5 ft from the concrete. I moved and the mindisc went dropping right onto the concrete. Blam! I was thinking the entire thing was cracked and dented. I pulled the unit out and amazingly it's still working as well as it did before it dropped. Not one single scratch or sign of being dropped. Amazing.
  23. You read correctly. I was able to grab an old SP minidisc and upload the track onto my PC. In fact SoundStage was able to even put the song label back onto the track! I was amazed. I also had one HUGE track that contained 4 or 5 songs that I didn't bother putting track marks in. That transferred without a problem. This was all done with the MZ-RH1. It's a nice, portable unit. You may need to purchase the MZ-M200 though since the RH1 appears to be sold out. No big deal if you don't already own a microphone. It's actually a pretty good deal.
  24. If the music industry is anything like the photography business the word "professional" normally equate to EXPENSIVE - Professional=expensive. For example, you can buy a digital camera for $800 or you can buy a professional camera for $33,000. So, if the minidisc continues along the path of being a professional item, then I can see it becoming more robust if newer models come out, but also with a high price attached. I too am glad I puchased my minidisc player from B&H two weeks ago. Then again if the M200 is going to be available then we really didn't need to really pull the trigger THAT soon.
