SanDisk releases a 32-gigabyte, 1.8-inch solid state drive as a drop-in replacement for the standard mechanical hard disk drive. Initially aimed at enterprise users as the first step toward mass consumer adoption, SanDisk SSD offers field-proven durability to keep mobile PCs working in the toughest of conditions and improves the overall user experience. Previously, large capacity flash-based drives had been used primarily by the military, aerospace and telecom industries, which demanded high performance and reliability under challenging environmental conditions. But now the declining cost of NAND flash memory has made SSD a viable and economically attractive alternative to existing technologies in a wider variety of applications, including mobile PCs aimed at enterprise and consumer users.

Using NAND flash enhanced by SanDisk's patented TrueFFS flash management technology, SanDisk SSD delivers two million hours mean time between failures. With no moving parts, it does not need to spin into action or seek files in the way that conventional hard disk drives do. These characteristics, combined with SanDisk's advanced flash management technology, make it possible for SanDisk SSD to deliver excellent performance compared with hard disk drives and competing solid state drives.

The SanDisk SSD achieves a sustained read rate of 62 megabytes per second and a random read rate of 7,000 inputs/outputs per second for a 512-byte transfer – more than 100 times faster than most hard disk drives. Taking advantage of this performance, a laptop PC equipped with SanDisk SSD can boot Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise in as little as 35 seconds. It also can achieve an average file access rate of 0.12 milliseconds, compared with 55 seconds and 19 milliseconds, respectively, for a laptop PC with a hard disk drive.

Another advantage of SanDisk SSD is its extremely low power consumption rate compared to the hard disk drive: 0.4 watt during active operation versus 1.0 watt. This is particularly important to extend the battery life for the benefit of enterprise road warriors. These results enable new operating systems, such as Microsoft Vista, to provide mobile PC users with a superior overall system experience. SanDisk SSD 1.8-inch 32GB solid state drive is now available for original equipment manufacturers. It is the first in a range of solutions that SanDisk will be offering to bring flash to the mainstream mobile PC market.

    :oB) Only good news.

  2. Do you have winamp? if so I recommend using that to make playlists, then import the .pls files into connect player, it will import any files that are missing from the library then move it over ot the device.

I've done it like this since january of this year, never had any problems, Never tried Itunes playlists since it is a "competing" program in away for transferring music you could say.

  3. With the way things are going, Sony will probably just release something like the Zune next year, after Apple conquer the market with 6G iPods and iPhone. Late and always behind, that's a Sony.

Pata please PM me next week's lottery results :D:lol:

If apple releases their 6G ipods before christmas next year, I don't see how sony will be behind them if they release one at the same time as well. as for the iphone, how will that be different from any other phone on the market that offers mp3 playback, acc, playback? But I am sure all the mindless drones out there will have to get one since it's an iphone. like 0Mg!111!oneone!!1

I'm going to wait for the sales results for the zune and see how msft did during the shopping season. They were able to take on sony with the Xbox and actually sell a good amount of units, it is possible the zune could very well do the same.

Nothing brings out the best in companies like competition. so let's get the game on. B)

  4. Wow, sony is going backwards. If Sony want to follow MS/Zune, then it means they will close their walkmen even further, and forget about backward compatiblity. The Zune is not compatible with MS's own play-for-sure, so this is a hint of Sony ditching connect store customers. Sony already have a closed system (sonicstage, connect, atrac). Is Sony really that stupid? The Zune is not even a success, it's limping along with lackluster sales. Wait till Apple unleash their 6G iPods and iPhone, nobody will care about the Zune anymore. And here Sony wants to copy MS? What Sony needs to do is make a decent software, that's it! That's what Apple have done. Zune is a failure also because the software that comes with it is buggy and crashing left and right. Wow, I can't believe the execs at Sony and MS are so stupid like this. What level of education do they have? Middle school? Hey Sony, how about visitting forums like this or the T-board, and see what people really want, and cut off your leeching Sony Music and Movie arms.

Good thing I have moved to iPod.

actually the article mentions more or less copying of apple, ie since it is the most succesful unit out there currently.

backwards compatibility won't nesscarily be lost since if sony, ditches DRM, the earth will stand still when that happens, will allow for addition any file types that are not copyrighted. I am sure sony will not ditch the old atrac format and will still have it, but should have the option to encode it to atrac.

Although I am sure sony will adopt new formats like they use in their phones, since it's like evolution, evolve and adapt or die out. Sony has to see this, otherwise maybe monkeys are running the show behind corporate.

Here is my take on it.

A move like this by sony is suprising yet expected. DRM is abviously needed I won't disagree there, but locking out people from using your product because a site selling music (other than your own) is cheaper in their country or has the music they like is just ridiculous.

Assuming spiral frog takes off and is launched, was due this month (I am assuming its middle or late december unless it has been delayed) then free music is coming to a website near you. No doubt, the DRM on those songs will be removeable thanks to your friendly neighbourhood, so the DRM on those files, and DRM on music in general will be pointless and a burden on the hardware companies. I don't buy DRMed music, reason is I want to transfer it to my mp3 player as many times as I want. I respect copyright nonetheless since I bought the songs from the website and it was my own money, why should I give it out to people I don't know? This is also high quality mp3s, 320cbr. and not any crappy atrac or mp4 from apples sites.

so general message, music I buy shouldn't be locked down to any specific hardware or program, since if it is, you are just locking out certain people from buying your product.

We can forget about drag and drop for the new player, since it was mentioned some interface would be used, so that dream or wish has very little chance of materializing.

Why the sudden change? well it is possible sony did consumer clinical tests and the results were less than appealing and people might have been confused with the new product and software, which isn't different from the current sony way. Sure the new walkman may have looked great but if it didn't function the way sony wanted or expected then it is dead in the water. So this is one possible reason for the shift by sony.

Although most likely the best method to beat a competitor is to copy them, but release something that is better. Which is basically ipod, with video, but less drm, better quality, bigger screen, better battery and better sound. Mind you this has to be priced competively otherwise its not gonna get off the ground. All speculation though, we are a long ways off from christmas 2007 so it's best to ignore the news of the new player for now and wait and see what crazy piece of hardware sony releases next for their walkman line.:lol::lol:
