  1. The same reason everyone here uses MD players. Cheap removable media.
  2. I know there were some "Mini-CD" portable devices awhile back that played those smaller CD-R discs (10cm or so?) I've seen those "Mini-DVD" discs out now, which are about the same size. Any word on any portable audio only players for these discs? I assume those Mini-DVD's are DVD-R's for camcorders or something. Would be nice to see a portable audio device that played audio files from those discs.
  3. Sorry, I think this is old news. I heard about these units awhile ago. Basically a rebranded RH910 and RH10.
  4. Wow, so it works perfectly with the NH600, but not the RH10? Slick. I'm picking up one of these remotes for my NH600d.
  5. Ohhhh, I see. Sorry, I was not aware that Atrac3plus was available in a 128kbps mode. Too bad it's not enabled for minidisc devices...
  6. Do you mean Atrac3plus @ 64kbps sounds very close to Atrac3 @ 132kbps? I think Alexx is just curious about the naming of the codec etc. Why have a "New" Atrac3plus if you're just going to skip the bitrates that are available with Atrac3? I would guess that if Atrac3plus were available at 132kbps, it would sound better than Atrac3 at 132kbps... no?
  7. Alexx is talking about ATRAC3plus, not plain ATRAC3
  8. Yeah, that's what I've done so far. It's still more trouble than it's worth though. <sigh> Give her the RH10?!!? Gah! That's just not right. Every man here knows that one of the only ways his girlfriend/wife will allow him to splurge on a newer version of "useless junk" is if she is interested in the original version of the "useless junk" as a hand-me-down. All joking aside, I wasn't really going to get her a Nano. I just thought that comment might spur a bit of contraversy on here. Simply put, the RH10 doesn't meet my needs. My girlfriend needed a portable music player, and I already have a ton of minidiscs, so it seemed logical to get her another unit, so that we could swap discs whenever needed. Unfortunately, with MP3's on my RH10 MD's, we can't swap discs anymore. I may pick up another 1st gen Hi-MD on eBay or something. Thanks for the suggestions though. -Raj
  9. Ah well, the RH10 is going back. I'm impatient and annoyed. I can't believe there's no easy way to force Sonicstage to convert MP3s (128k) to ATRAC3 (132k) Maybe I'll get her a Nano or something.
  10. Hate to nitpick on a single point, but there's no reason to have a Hi-MD car deck anymore. CD/MP3 Players are the new standard for decks. Hell, most mid-range cars come standard with one. 700mb of music on a $0.25 CD? Beats out Hi-MD anyday. That, and you can make an MP3 music cd in under 10 minutes, including choosing, selecting, dragging, and burning. Sony's playing catch-up with almost everything. This is no different.
  11. Congrats migt! I liked that design ALOT, although I'm sure that if Sony got their grubby hands on it, they'd quickly throw away the SD slot and put in their less popular MS Duo. Nice work!
  12. Nah, tried that. Still transfers as MP3. Tried it two ways: 1. On the "transfer" screen (with library on the left and device on the right) I clicked on "Settings" in the middle, and chose "Specified bit rate transfer mode." There is a disclaimer stating "If the bit rates of the transferred tracks are lower than specified, they will be transferred in their current bit rate." Basically, since my 128kbps MP3s are a lower bitrate than the 132kbps ATRAC3, the software will leave it as a 128kbps MP3. Please note that this menu is identical to the menu when you go to Tools -> Options -> Transfer -> Hi-MD -> Transfer Settings. 2. Tried the "Advanced" tab on the above mentioned menu, and chose "Convert Automatically and Transfer" and chose 132kbps ATRAC3. Still no luck. I even chose "Ask Each Time" and it never asked...? Even after deleting the temporary converted .OMA files from the temp directory. I'm at a loss. I basically want to transfer my MP3's to my Rh10, but put them there in ATRAC3 mode. The only way I've been successful is to manually convert each track to ATRAC3, then move the original MP3 file so that Sonicstage can no longer find it. Annoying as hell. If I can't get this working, the Rh10 is going back. Part of the appeal of Minidisc is the ability to swap and trade discs. If my girlfriend has to bring her minidisc player to me anytime she wants some music on a disc, I might as well get her a cheap flash MP3 player.
  13. I've thought of that. My intention was to create discs for my GF, since she doesn't have a computer to do it herself. If I do what you suggest, then I can only create discs for her when she's over with her minidisc player. It's just too inconvenient. Besides, playing with her minidisc is one of the last things I wanna do when she's over.
  14. I'm interested in icons that represent the actual minidiscs, and not the players. Is there a gallery of icons for the discs themselves? Perhaps a tutorial somewhere for creating your own?
  15. I just picked up an RH10, and given my NH600D to my girlfriend. I want to be able to create MD's on my RH10 that are playable on the NH600D. I've chosen ATRAC3 132kbps as the bit rate. Most of my MP3's are 128kbps, with some 192kbps. Unfortunately, my RH10 transfers the 128kbps MP3's without any conversion. Since they're still in MP3 format, they can't be played on the NH600D. If I select Hi-LP mode, then Sonicstage will convert them, presumably because of the lower bitrate. Is there any way of forcing Sonicstage to transfer a huge selection of MP3's and force it to convert them? I've figured out how to do it one track at a time, but that's really not an option for huge playlists.
  16. I don't know how old you are, so I'm not trying to be condescending here... But as part of my "Growing Up" process, I had to train myself to resist buying the "Latest and Greatest" and just stick to whatever meets my needs. That being said, I will stick to what I have until it no longer meets my needs, or until it breaks. At that point in the future, I'll decide.
  17. Well, if I pick up these jewel cases, I'll be putting up the sleeves I have on eBay. I've got about 40 Sony sleeves, 20 Memorex sleeves, and a handful of JVC sleeves. I'll keep this thread updated if I order the Jewel cases and sell my sleeves.
  18. Anybody know of any place to buy cases just like these in Canada? The shipping kills the price if you're not ordering very many...
  19. I'm not sure if the RH10 is capable of this (I have an NH600D and it works) but I format my discs in Hi-MD mode, and copy the songs over in LP2 format, either 96kbps or 132kbps. If you aren't picky about the sound quality, then go to Hi-SP 64kbps at the lowest. Going all the way down to 48kbps will be way too noticeable. Personally, I find 96kbps and lower to sound "tinny" where all the higher frequency sounds are melded together as a single monotone background "tinny" noise. That noise will still show up on your car stereo, no matter how low quality the car stereo is. For the soul and r&b music, I'd guess there isn't alot of treble in there, but I've heard alot of people complain about the same type of sound for the bass sounds.
  20. I've never uploaded any recordings, but the most common piece of advice I've seen is to upgrade to SonicStage 3.2 IMMEDIATELY.
  21. The DH10P is available at minidisc-canada.com I think the DH10P used to be on sonystyle.ca, but it's not there anymore.
  22. Yay! The forums are back! Thanks to the administrators/owners for their hard work. I was starting to go through some weird withdrawal without the forums here!
  23. Nice Review, thanks! I've been paranoid about the "Easily-scratched" RH10, so haven't even considered it, but perhaps now I'll give it another look the next time I'm at the Sony Store.
  24. Thanks! Wow! How did you create that picture? That's amazing! I've really got to learn 3D modeling...
