  1. Hi everyone. I wanted to post this in 2005 news but "you don't have access, etc" came up so here it is. It's a bit off topic but I believe it concerns all Hi-MD/MD owners (and HD player owners as well), hence the post. Samsung (and Sandisk, I believe), have developed 16Gb CF cards due for 2nd half 2006. 32Gb is planned http://www.physorg.com/news6388.html. It's a little while from production but I wonder what effect this card will have on the portable MD and HD market (i.e. the BIG markets). -Will people still buy HD players when they can still get ample space in a card much smaller? -Will anyone still bother with Hi-MD/MD's considering the relatively small storage capacity (as compared to the CF card in question), and the removable ability of CF cards, just like MD's? I would expect an iPod nano in the future to have this much storage, as Samsung develops the NAND storage for iPod nano's. All comments welcome.
  2. It's amazing how many similarities there are between Apple and Sony now that you think of it. Sony: "Well the unit itself is a good price, but then you need a AU$50 8Mb memory card (PS2), even though you can get a 256Mb SD card for the same price". Apple: "Well the unit itself is a good price, but then you need to pay extra for a longer battery warranty 'cos otherwise we'll screw you out of AU$70. Oh wait, we already did! Unreplaceable battery; who would've thought!". Sell it cheap and make money on accessories. Not unlike the business model for video game consoles then. (In this case, games being accesories).
  3. Any chance of an Australian release? (Howard Stringer says AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA ) That'd be bloody right.
  4. Maybe they picked up a few things from when Sony was king a few years ago. (Preacher) Can I get an amen to that? Let me hear you say it. (Audience) AMEN! Unfortunately there are a LOT of shallow people out there who honestly believe their phone/TV/etc represents who they are. They don't buy electronics, they buy "lifestyle products" (cue punch into salesman's face). Hey, at least there's people who use phones to listen to music to hack on; nobody likes "them" It would be nice to see Apple give some leverage to Sony, 'cos, you know, Sony only invented portable audio. But hey, that's business I guess.
  5. Size (of units) , I can just imagine someone trying to hang an MD unit off a lanyard that's hanging around their neck, flash player style. Size (media capacity) If there were, say, a 20Gb disc (not happening unless they shrink Blu-Ray, then you have to buy a new walkman anyway), I'd be willing to pay. That'd rock. The 20Gb sweet spot. Or I could just go buy a 20Gb MuVo for less than a new unit and disc and not put up with crap software. Speed (transferring songs) I just copied 860Mb of data onto my Hi-MD no less than an hour ago. That was painful. 45mins of torture. No complaints here. My SS3.2 doesn't even work! (I can still record though, that's the beauty of the format. No computer required).
  6. You're not wrong. Ask most people what sort of eq setting they have on their home system and it's usually more or less a "V" shape to compensate for the human ear's ability to hear mid-range (3-8Khz give or take), louder than, say, low range (500Hz>). Most human voices are in the mid range though... I think it's got something to do with people using ear/headphones rather than putting it through speakers. Also, I use no EQ. 6 bands isn't enough adjustment for me but hey, horses for courses.
  7. Totally agree with you on that. What about navigating the menu on a flash player though? My friend has a flash player with about 80-odd songs on it and you have to flick through every track individually to get the song you want rather than having a Artists/Albums/Song sort type of menu structure. Do you know if this is common?
  8. Aggressive Marketing? Okay, I'll just forget that, with DVD, you never have to rewind, the quality doesn't degrade for YEARS, the discs, and thus the casing, are a lot smaller than VHS and DVD's support 5.1. DVD is popular, despite the fact that set-top recorders are still well out of price range for most people, because it is SO EASY TO USE. Perhaps you misinterpreted. iPod's are the only portable audio player in the consumer market that use AAC, much the same as how Hi-MD's are the only portable audio players that use ATRAC/3. Aww, did the truth hurt your feelings? Don't worry, one day you'll actually appreciate the good sound quality that MP3 will NEVER provide.
  9. Since Sony is Japanese they could have "SUPER HAPPY SMILE FUN WISH 352 ATRAC PLUS". To get the kids in they could have ATRAC 352 X-TREEEEM! Mountain Dew could sponsor it.
  10. WMA has a "lossless" (oxymoron alert!) mode, MP3 does not. How many people download a seperate compressor for music when free Windows Media Player (10) can do MP3 and WMA? Also, with WMA being Windows only, I guess that that means only 95-96% of the computer market can use it then. Go out and ask Joe Blow what OGG Vorbis is and they'll probably look at you weird. AAC is basically Apple's version of ATRAC, except it sounds like MP3 i.e. CRAP. It's not even subjective; MP3 sounds crap, end of story. It's only real use is on file-sharing networks and music download sites which screw the people too stupid to demand a better file type and compression ratio or a WAV option.
  11. How about "Sony should stop picking numbers at random for compression ratios and make it 360 because 360 is easier to remember". Then again, doing that people would probably think 360 - XBOX 360, something Sony understandably wants to avoid.
  12. What are you insinuating? That someone might post something anti-iPod? (readers of many of my previous posts would know what I'm talking about and how much I absolutely love to hate iPods). I don't use MP3 as the quality is, for me, shite. If I were to use compression I would use WMA first then ATRAC3 but I can totally see why people are pissed, being forced into a format they might not want to use and all. It's like how you HAVE to use SS for MD on PC (or iCrash, erm, iTunes for iPod's. Just couldn't help myself ). A big, fat MP3/WMA/WAV crack for SS is what's needed. Nice 'n easy formats to work with and the support base for all those formats is huge.
  13. One of my old Sony 74min discs is screwed; the shutter doesn't close at all when you remove the disc from the unit and now the disc itself has all sorts of fingerprints and crap on it. Still works. Never had a problem with Sony Hi-MD/MD's (come to think of it, I've never had a problem with any Sony appliance I've owned).
  14. Yeah I can; sometimes I have to strain to tell though. I thought the soundtrack to HERO (Tan Dun, Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra, Kodo drummers of Japan and Iztahk Perlman), sounded pretty good in SP on MD mode until I recorded it all in PCM when I got my Hi-MD walkman. All I can say is, damn, those violins are awesome. I use Sony MDR-F1 headphones. Crap for noise cancelling but awesome if the environment is quiet. I usually have it too loud to hear the outside environment though. I suppose you have a point about the username though.
  15. PCManiac, as in PCM maniac. PCM is all I record with.
  16. No, not really. Most Sony gear tends to have a strong bottom end but loses a little bit at the top compared to, say, Sennheisser. I've been listening to Sony gear basically all my life though so when it was time to get good headphones it was going to be Sony MDR-7509 or Sennheisser HD600/800 but then I picked up Sony MDR-F1's in Japan for 22,000yen (about AU$275) so that sealed the deal. That, and Sony Central in Adelaide want $670 for the same pair... By the way, thanks for sharing your experience with us. It's true about being attached to MD's. I look at HD players and other stuff but I always come back to MD. MD
  17. Well I don't PREFER to record that way, it's just that my SS3.2 doesn't work and I really can't be stuffed mucking about with my PC so I'm not going to bother when the "traditional" method of recording works (albeit, slowly but the end result is the same). Thank god I can rename tracks with my SS3.2 though. I remember having many a sore thumb renaming tracks with my pre-Net MD MGZ-755. Not only that but it takes AGES just to input a single character.
  18. I can't see many (if any) Hi-MD users migrating to Flash-based players as the sound quality is, quite frankly, awful. Also (for me anyway), MD/Hi-MD has turned out to be RELIABLE. Yeah, my 3 year old MZG-755 makes weird clacking noises but it still works, unlike some of the more popular HDD players out there... I know what you mean about PC's. Sonicstage 3.2 crashes when I try to transfer a song no matter what format and Simple Burner won't even recognize that there is a CD in the drive. However, I can still listen to my music in PCM on Hi-MD's thanks to the fact I don't need a computer to put songs on an MD. Put my CD player on "program", hook up the TOSLINK cable, press record on the Hi-MD unit and play on the CD player and just walk away. To tell the truth it doesn't bother me that much (probably a habit from the pre-netMD days).
  19. It's my old remote from when I got a MZG-755 3 years ago. The radio sucks ass anyway; good luck getting a decent reception. You can use it in other countries though.
  20. Sorry for the late reply TLV. Also, kurisu, sorry if these photos are too big; this is the 1st time I've posted photos. !st photo shows the connection type. 2nd photo shows that the remote CAN be connected to the MZNH-600. 3rd photo shows what happens if you only push play and 4th photo shows that the volume display doesn't go away when you change the volume with the remote. Radio doesn't work and it takes about 20secs to start playing when you flick the "next song" switch to start it up. [attachmentid=965][attachmentid=966][attachmentid=967][attachmentid=968]
  21. Hide your data on a Mac. No-one will be able to get it then because the only people that use them are people who don't like computers (except audio/video professionals) Seriously though, if you have sensitive data, put it on removable media and use it on a standalone PC i.e. one that isn't connected to any sort of network.
  22. Hmm, good point. However, CD's can only hold 80mins of PCM/WAV quality compared to Hi-MD's 94. That's not much more time but the physical size is much smaller. I'd be willing to sacrifice size if it means I can use DVD's for WAV playback because you get so much more time.
  23. The radio won't work. However, judging by your post(s) I don't think that's an issue. Good luck in your search!
  24. That'd be nice. Not as much space per disc (or as cheap and plentiful), but the price of blank media isn't much of an issue. Yeah DVD players are big but you do get to watch movies and other stuff on a good sized screen (unlike the new iPod movie's 6cm squintfest screen*cough*). The search continues...
