Maybe your sound card has a function called 3D Depth (which is common for AC'97 cards). Disable it (check the Mute box). To do this you may need to enable the respective slider in Volume Control.

Don't forget the MZ-RH10 and the MZ-RH910, which also can upload (in Hi-MD mode), and can use a rechargeable and an AA battery simultaneously, for a really long battery life.

Superbaldguy, get a couple of GP gumsticks, complete with a charger. You'll want to forget about anything Li-ion.
-
The RH1 is still the best unit for recording, since it remembers recording settings, instead of resetting them each time you press the stop button. Although the RH910 is much more convenient as a portable player.

Get a full download here: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?s=&am...st&p=117697 (don't forget the separate drivers download), burn it to a CD, and be safe. It seems that these versions do not need the SONY authentication server while installing. But they WILL need it in case the key on the computer is damaged for some reason, and in case you a restoring the library from a backup. So, un-DRM all your files as soon as possible, and use simple copying to back up your library. This way you'll be free from any trouble. At least until some Windows update renders SS unusable. In this case install Windows under some Virtual Machine (WITH USB SUPPORT!!) without the update, and install SS there. You may actually use VMware Server under Ubuntu Linux (and, possibly, under other Linux versions) to run Windows and SS. More info here: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showt...8. And SS42 actually IS much better that any other versions. Download it, unless you need Vista compatibility, in which case SS43 is the only option. Well, download both (don't forget that the drivers are different), just in case you'll have to switch to Vista someday.

Well, I got an unused RH910 this August for only $170 (the seller initially wanted $200). And that was here in Russia, where Hi-MD units are really scarce and expensive, except for the RH1, which is currenlty available for $300 in Moscow.

Rapidshare is actually a filesharing service. You can download for free from them, just press the Free button at the bottom of the page (you'll have to wait for the download if you are using the free service). Alternatively, you may try downloading and installing OpenMG 4.6 (the one that comes with SS42) using the 1st part of these instructions: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=20310

Buy an MZ-RH910! Its default mode is very similar to Title2 in first generation units + time and track number display.
-
The manual for the player may also help to some extent.

Let's test whatever is left of my Japanese.

Another chance lost!

I have no idea, and I don't have a Hi-MD deck. Maybe someone who has one will try this? Not sure about older decks, but the ONKYO X-N9TX mini-system actually has an optical out.
-
I was able to download a DTS-encoded WAV file in PCM to my RH1 (you can get some DTS-encoded files for free from http://www.sr.se/multikanal ). The unit obviously can not play it correctly (just produces digital noise), but I think, if you have a Hi-MD deck with an optical out, and connect this deck to a DTS-compatible receiver with an optical in, the receiver may be able to decode the 5.1 sound.

Welcome to the forums! SonicStage 3.4 does not work under Vista. Simply install SonicStage 4.3 and use it - it is Vista-comptible.
-
Trouble is, SonicStage actually writes something to the disc while uploading in Hi-MD mode (remember that it requires write access to the disc). That's why it is possible to corrupt a previously normally recorded disc while uploading, especially if the unit is subject to a shock or a sudden movement. No one knows what is going on at the time of Hi-MD uploading. Probably, some DRM atavisms are being written or changed, which require system files to be updated everytime you upload anything.

Yes, I know that the service manual for the NH600D is in the downloads section, but the units are actually different (line/optical input and adapter input), and the service manual for the NH600D does not contain any (!) service mode settings. What's interesting is that the BUFFALO clone was able to play MP3s. And the NH600 does contain a seemingly MP3-compatible DSP, which was later used in second-generation units, with a very slight modification - CXD2681-225GG in second generation units, and CXD2681-221GG in the NH600. But address 0114, which enables/disables MP3 playback in second generation units, has a totally different function in the NH600.

Turned out the fatty has a wider dynamic range than the RH910. And that with an analogue amp!
-
And now I am also a happy owner of a silver MZ-NH600. Bought sealed, in mint condition. With a line/optical input and an adapter input. Love it!

The MZ-M10 is a nice second-generation unit, based on the MZ-RH910 (which I have), which has all the functions of the MZ-RH10 (or MZ-M100), but is not subject to the OLED burnout. The only advantages you'll get if you buy a third-generation unit, the MZ-RH1 (or its MZ-M200 version), is the legacy MD upload capability, and uncrippled MP3 playback. But you'll almost lose portability (it is really inconvenient as a portable player, although it is a good portable recorder, because it remembers level settings). In the future, when you need support for the MZ-M10 on a SONY site (software, drivers, manuals, etc.) just select the MZ-RH910 from the list of available units.

Looks like it is language-independent. Installed fine on my English SonicStage 4.2.
-
And I should say that's a great start! One of my all-time favourites. Listened to it just a few days ago.

Thanks! The whole thing about discovering that Hi-MD does not actually need any drivers may lead to a conclusion that the standard was initially planned as Drag'n'Drop. Just to think about what is lost!!!
-
Thanks! Further experiments show that SonicStage also does not need any drivers when working with devices in Hi-MD mode.
