  1. I just completed the replacement of the OLED displays on my MZ-RH1. The design of the replacement part is really superb, a marvel of engineering! Disassembly and reassembly is, yes, quite complex with no margin for error, but there are step-by-step instructions and videos to ease the process. It is absolutely worth it, as the unit is now working as the first day, 15 years ago.
  2. @Bigcountry0209: Have you visited iFixit.com ? Most ipods can be opened an the battery replaced if you have the right tools

    LIP-4wm

Punkrockaddict: where did you get the replacement batteries ?
  4. This is more than I paid for my MZ-RH1, new, from Sony, a few years ago...Totally crazy price!
  5. Does anyone know where to buy LIP4-WM batteries at a reasonable price ? Since Li-Ion batteries start to age as soon as they are manufactured, any hint on when Sony stopped manufacturing ?

    HI-MD 1gb

In my opinion, the Hi-MD discs that were once upon a time a reasonable deal (around 6-7 USD a piece) are not anymore, since Sony stopped (awfully fast) their production, worth their price. A 80 mn disc using Hi-MD format stores 300 Mb and is much less than 1/4 the price of 1GB Hi-MD discs. Also, for some obscure reason, labels for Hi-MD are veru small and makes the format quite inconvenient, after all.
  7. If your son intends to use the unit for his job, I would certainly recommend an Hi-MD unit, such as the MZ-RH1 (some are already available second-hand), because: - it is able to connect to a PC via USB, with no restriction on uploading / downloading (many (almost all) earlier models from Sony, such as the Net-MD models, had absurd restrictions on the data transfer) - the 1 GB capacity of Hi-MD discs allows up to 1 hour recording without any compression (i.e. for professional recordings) - it can read and record all MD's (72/80 minute format (the original MD) up to Hi-MD - also it can read from Sony data format (as all other models), but also the MP3 format As for the microphones, they can range literally from the equivalent of a Nissan Micra to a Ferrari. One of the cheapest models is the Sony ECM-DS70P (look on ebay, some come from China at absurdly low prices). One that has received generally good ratings for a reasonable cost is the SONY ECM-MS907. I hope this helps,
  8. Hi everyone. I' glad that the MZ RH1 is still marketed by Sony , as a high quality recorder, which it is, really. This post makes me think of the weakest point of the unit, the battery cover. I have several batteries and have often to exchange it. The battery cover is a little piece of plastic, if broken (or wears out) the unit is non-useable. So, is it possible to buy from Sony a spare battery cover ? If so, does anyone know the P/N, address, ... Thanks
  9. Well this is good news. Do we need new models beyond the RH-1 ? Maybe not. We certainly need at least production of the media (MD's and Hi-MD's), and support for SonicStage. So it's good to see Sony promoting it as a professional recorder, this commits them for at least a few years
  10. I agree. For me (besides the recording (and PCM uncomressed quality recording) capability), the MD is still superior in audio quality. it is one of the few media players allowing playing in multiple compression ratio, from PCM to lossless-ATRAC to lossy ATRAC and MP3.
  11. Yes indeed ! I just bought both Hi-MD and standard MD blanks in FRY'S at El Segundo, CA. Hi-MD were 6.99 USD each and MD's 1.37 (each, in a 10-box). I guess it is the same price as on Sony's website. Both Sony brand.
