Ryzir
I just noticed on connect.com that they have a new program that comverts mp3 to atrac leaving the original mp3 intact. http://www.connect.com/download_mp3Conv.html I wonder if it is faster than SonicStage converting these? Not that I convert mp3 to atrac (too lossy for my ears!)
doclloyd
Good find. I'm downloading now... albeit quite slowly. Figures after I post about the app on the sony walkman site they'd post it on connect.com Oh well. I'll give it a try and let you all know how it goes... The_Stamp
grr... not much choice.. 48,64,and 256 kbit... all atrac3 plus. and you dont pick the conversion quality either =/
doclloyd
Yes, seems to be a relatively useless tool, considering it only offers ATRAC3+. This leaves people who use NetMD or MDLP recording modes with Hi-MD portables out of luck... bummer. The concept was a good idea.
xispe
probably this is the awaited mp3 software upgrade! It's a nice ideia, but the conversion still needs to be done, are it still takes time... and i don't like much the ideia of having duplicates of all my mp3s in my harddrive in form of atrac3plus files... Christopher
How long does the conversion take with this tool compared to SS?
b.e.wilson
I'm not home, so I can't test it myself yet. Is this transcoding the .mp3 onto ATRAC just as SonicStage does it, or is this wrapping the .mp3 stream in OpenMG (with the .mga extension)? Transcoding should be a slow as SonicStage, but wrapping should be pretty quick. If it's just another way to transcode the mp3s then I can see on edecided advantage to someone who has many mp3's already. Currently if you ass mp3s to SonicStage then transfer them the .mga file goes into your Optimized Files folder, taking more space. If you then want to go back and delete the mga files you must do it in SonicStage one file at a time. But if you could make the mga files separately, you could add them to SonicStage, transfer them, then delete the mga's from SonicStage and your hard disk, keeping the only mp3's on the hard drive if you need to transcode them again. You won't be able to move the mga's from your minidisc to the hard drive and back to a second minidisc, but you can transcode them again. xispe
it's the same process as SonicStage does... nothing quick in here... where did you heard of that wrapping ? is it possible ?
b.e.wilson
I presume it's the method Sony will employ to retain DRM when mp3's are supported in the future.
xispe
i have my doubts if that will ever be possible... a minidisc playing mp3... i would like it, since almost all my music comes from mp3 and i have to reencode everything in atrac, but i still don't beleive that current players in the future will allow that. jazmaan
I'd rather have an ATRAC to MP3 converter that didn't add more lossiness.
b.e.wilson
Now that I've tested it, it's useless. Does exactly what it would do if you added the files in SonicStage. Useful, I suppose, if you wanted to convert files while doing something else in SonicStage.
The_Stamp
perhaps they made it to go together with the upcomind atrac to wav converter. hmm, come to think of it, perhaps the atrac to wav converter would only support the atrac3plus files, since this new one only supports atrac3plus. =/
sxc
You can only upload from a Hi-MD formatted disc, which means that any recordings will have been made in atrac3plus or PCM. So I think it's safe to assume that the atrac to wav tool will only support atrac3plus.
xispe
The conversion to atrac is killing me... Now i am converting all my mp3 library to ATRAC3Plus 256 kbps (1 day and still converting...) After the pleasent and convinent step, I am noticing a slighty loss of quality, due to the conversion process. It's nice when that happens with mp3s at 192 kbps, since i start dealing with an ATRAC file that is larger than the original mp3 and have worst quality. Since the files get larger, the transfer process to the minidisc even takes longer. IT WOULD BE SO NICE IF I COULD SEND MP3 FILES DIRECTLY TO THE MINIDISC... Like this, hi-md could be a ipod killer... i don't want to convert everything. I am sad with my nh700 because of this... Besides this, it has all the nice features of a minidisc player, like the ability to record from everything, without being close to the computer, the 1gb disc (still only one...) and the reformated discs to 290 mb, that can fit a lot of music inside of them. let's hope to see what happens in the next months with the new sony look over mp3... if have my doubts that the existing hi-mds will support mp3.
