Syrius
Guys. Tomorrow a fellow MD-lover and I will conduct several tests regarding true SP, and fake SP to see if we can spot the differences, and where they are. The problem is, I don't know how to make a NetMD player record in fake SP through Sonic Stage. Can someone tell me how? Thanks. EDIT: GAH. Posted it in the wrong forum by mistake. Sorry mods! :wacky: EDIT 2: Never mind. Figured it out. Hmm. This version of SonicStuff seems a bit more friendly.
xispe
nice! i'm interested in these results also. I have a NH700 and some of my recordings are done in that "fake SP mode" i notice that the thing isn't as good as with real time recording via an optical output. follow up with the tests!
sknight
Fake SP? Now I'm lost. I had my 800 for a few days now and I'm still getting up to speed.
atrain
that would be netMD fake SP [aka LP2 132kbs recorded for backwards compaibility with non-LP] not HiMD Hi-SP
aeriyn
by virtue of how it's done, fake SP should actually sound slightly worse than LP2... ... since it's LP2 that's been transcoded to SP.
sxc
Is it possible to transfer using Fake-SP in sonicstage 2.x? I can't find the bitrate in my copy.
jadeclaw
It is. It is simple: Fire up SS. Connect MD. Insert disc. No 1GB. Standard disc. Select NetMD from the dropdown in the topleft of the transfer window. Click on the 'Transfer Mode' button between the two windows. A dialogue pops up. Select the lowest radio button 'SP transfer mode'. Confirm with 'OK'. Now transfer. There you are.
Syrius
Well, since my friend had to leave a bit early that night, we couldn't compare. But, we tried LP2, and he said it sounded almost as if it was monaural, and after we did Fake-sp with his song ("Camouflage"), he said it sounded better, and the difference is audible. I don't have an MDLP capable player with me, but as soon as I get the N520 I bought online, I'll report back. Keep in mind my only phones to test are my MDR EX 71 Sp. No eggos or sennheisers here. aeriyn
First-generation (real-time record) LP2 tracks don't sound horrible, but they aren't very good. NetMD fake-SP is much much worse; it's about what I got transcoding 192kbps MP3 to LP2 via netmd. It's about the same on the crappiness scale. I'll stick to my JE330, kthnx.
Syrius
Well, since it pretty much depends on the source, I'll be ripping from a CD. Now, I wonder if there is any difference between ripping and transferring via USB, or ripping, converting and then transferring.
Syrius
RATS! I got a message from my seller saying that my unit got damaged in the shipping, and cannot be replaced. (WTF? Don't they have several others like that for sale? I smell a rat here...) They say they'll refund me... As long as I get my money back, no harm, I guess. Christopher
Damaged in the shipping? Was that the exact statement they gave you?
aeriyn
I'll do the fake-SP test with that old N505 I have laying around. PCM vs. real SP (on JE330) vs. netMD SP vs. netMD LP2 Hmm. Wonder what's going to win? My Beyers are on their way! So I'll have a good pair o' cans to do this little testing with... ... well, when the amp's done, too. :whatever:
