NH900 Battery Question...

Okay, now I know that the supplied "gumstick" rechargeable for the NH900 is crap, and I am looking into getting a better one...

In the meantime...

If I have the external battery adapter thingy hooked up, does the unit pull from the external battery before pulling from the rechargeable? Or is it the other way around? Or does it pull from both at the same time?

I did notice that if you replace the dry battery the status window doesn't change to reflect the new battery until the unit is turned off and on again, which would lead me to beleive that it is pulling from the rechargeable first. Pulling from the rechargeable first would make the most sense to me, but hey, it's Sony right?

Any thoughts?

i have another 900 battery question...

my 900 just arrived today and im charging the battery... at first it said "charging" and showed the charging battery animation thing.... then after just afew minutes it went blank

when i disconnect and reconnect either power source (the cradle or the ac adapter directly into the 900), "charging" appears again.... only to go away after a short while

is it charging or not?

Mine does this as well and seems to be charging the battery just fine. The amount of time it's displayed seems to vary with how much charging is needed. However, I can't say I've ever watched continuously looking for that. I've got a charger that came with my E55 that I use most of the time, since I have two packs now.

Deafplayer, use the NH900 for a few cycles of the battery and that should bring everything into line.

It is possible that the Ni-MH was almost fully charged when you connected it up & hence thats why it only breifly shows charging, just leave it to charge up for a while (I leave mine on overnight).

I've been thrilled with my nh900's battery life. It only seems when I wear it (battery combo) down to the nub that I don't have enough battery to record. Playback is still fine though for a while.

I thought I read in the manual that it's not good to leave the unit on the charger for longer than it requires. Anyone know better?

i have a sort of related question on batteries:

these players that recharge, is it done from a wall socket, not via USB? I live in the UK, if i bought a player in the US would that be a bad idea? or could i just pick up a different cradle here?

The NH-900 has a charging stand that plugs into a supplied DC adapter. It's a standard Sony DC 3V adapter that they use on their CD players and such. The current being fed to the unit for charging is 3V DC. You could even use a generic 3V DC power supply that has a tip of the right polarity and size.

If you bought a US unit and wanted to use it in the UK, I would simply buy a DC adapter that accepts the UK voltage. You might be able to buy one from Sony Europe or get a generic one at an electronics store.

I missed that statement in the manual, I'll have to look at it. Every Sony charger I have ever dealt with automatically sensed when the battery was charged and turned to a trickle charge state. I know the wall charger from my E55 has a light that goes off when the battery is fully charged. It can take 3 hours for the light to go off when the battery started out very drained.

ah, good call thanks. so fuck the docking cable, just get a wire...i'd assume something like that would be cheap enough to justify getting a player in america

just to make sure yakko, would it be the same deal with the NH-1?

i had a thought a minute ago on the gumstick. my old cassette walkman used a gumstick and charger, which i still have... what if it was the same type of batter, i could just use that  obviously i'd have to find the manual to figure out which it is....and it probably wouldnt work.... and would it blow my house up? huh.gif

On the bottom of the charging cradle is a place to plug in the DC adapter. You still need the cradle, but you can plug the UK DC adapter into it. This way, it should work with your house electricity. Let me know if this is still confusing. I could take some pictures of what I'm talking about and email it to you if you'd like.

As for the gumstick charger for your walkman, I'm not sure if it would work or not. You'd have to make sure the voltages were the same for both, and the size matched.

I'm not sure about the NH-1. I've never seen the charging stand for one in person. Maybe an NH-1 owner would like to chime in.

I have a Sanyo 1400 mAh gumstick I picked up in Germany last year, and it works great in my 900 and my E55. I've yet to use the one that came with the 900. I also haven't run the 900 long enough to figure out how long I'm getting out of this battery pack.

I thought the same as well but when I added a new dry cell AA during a recording on New year's eve, the battery level meter DID increase. It found the new battery WITHOUT me powering off or even pausing, it just rolled along recording and then added 2 bars on the meter with the new battery. That's good to know in my book.
